Today on Capitol Hill, Americans for Prosperity, the corporate front group founded and funded by David Koch of the oil conglomerate Koch Industries, hosted an event to urge the passage of Sen. Lisa Murkowski’s (R-AK) resolution to gut the Clean Air Act’s power to regulate carbon emissions. Several Republican Senators came to the AFP event to encourage support for the resolution, which was drafted by lobbyists from the coal and oil industry.
After the event, ThinkProgress spoke to one of the speakers, Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-OK), about his support for Carly Fiorina (R-CA), the U.S. Senate candidate to emerge from the primary last night. Inhofe gave Fiorina an early endorsement, and his nephew, Fred Davis, created the infamous “demon sheep” ads for Fiorina’s campaign.
Inhofe, who has been described as Washington’s “the last flat-earther” for his strident denial of climate change, said Fiorina “is supporting what I am supporting.” He elaborated that Fiorina both supports eviscerating the EPA’s ability to enforce the Clean Air Act, and that she is supportive of his beliefs “in terms of the whole global warming hoax.” He then added that he is “very proud of her”:
TP: I was wondering if Carly actually supports this effort to change the regulatory power of the Clean Air Act that you’re talking about today?
INHOFE: No, Carly’s already taken a stand on this.
TP: Oh, so she’s supporting this?
INHOFE: She is supporting what I am supporting. In fact Carly made a statement yesterday that was the strongest statement I’ve heard yet in terms of the whole global warming hoax. So I was very proud of her.
Watch it:
Not long ago, Fiorina believed in climate change and supported efforts to deal with carbon pollution. On Fox News last year, Fiorina praised Sen. John Kerry (D-MA) for crafting bipartisan clean energy legislation to achieve “energy independence” and “addressing climate change as equally important goals.” Fiorina also campaigned for Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) in 2008 because he promised to “create a cap-and-trade system that will encourage the development of alternative energy sources.”
Fiorina has quickly dismissed her once-held climate change beliefs to satisfy the far right, science-denying wing of the conservative movement. She initially flipped, telling reporters that people need the “courage” to question climate change science. Then, she ran an ad mocking Sen. Barbara Boxer’s (D-CA) belief in climate change, with the narrator claiming that the world’s catastrophic changes in temperature are simply due to the “weather.” But now with Inhofe claiming Fiorina agrees fully with his belief that climate change is a “hoax” and that Congress must radically weaken the Clean Air Act, the metamorphosis of Fiorina into full right-wing sycophant is complete.

Just one of those insignificant tiny little unimportant details, eh?
June 9th, 2010 at 2:35 pmPutting personal and political gain over facts is the “conservative way” for the republican members in Congress.
I never want to hear another one of them or their supporters screaming about the future of their children and/or grandchildren because even if the deficit is reduced/eliminated, there will be no future if the planet becomes increasingly uninhabitable.

Great!
If she continues to stroke the Right, Californians will reject her, on that basis alone. Her opponent was even more wingnutty, and we rejected him, so she’d better triangulate now, and start moving towards the center, or lose big.

June 9th, 2010 at 2:56 pmInhofe is not merely uninformed or misinformed — he’s stupid.
June 9th, 2010 at 2:56 pmLet’s face it. The “Far Right” is nothing but the mouth of big Oil.
Every one of the far right senators is from an oil producing state. Several of the big fundamentalist preacher-politicians also came from big Oil backgrounds.
Oil has ruled us for many, many decades; since the crisis of 1974 (which happened after we definitively lost in Vietnam, and the little oil states got uppity) and efforts by Carter and Gray Davis to buck them resulted in their personal calamities.
Only we can cut back and cut down their profits, but we need the government to help us on this, not hinder us, as Inhofe, Fiorina, Vitter, et al. would have it do.

1) “Climate-Gate” is two f***ing sentences taken out of context out of roughly 14 years worth of emails. Even if global warming is a hoax, you think breathing yellow air is good for you?
2) There are thousands of other scientists, all over the world, in agreement about climate change. Sadly they’re out-numbered by the retards, like Wild Weasel and Inhofe, who thinks God is going to whisk them up to Heaven so they can just f**k up the planet in the mean-time without repercussions.

A U.S. national survey released Tuesday finds that public concern about global warming is increasing, with public belief that it is occurring rising to 61 per cent, up from 57 per cent since January. And 50 per cent of Americans believe the phenomenon is caused by people — an increase of three points.
Fifty-three per cent of respondents now worry about the impact global warming will have (an increase of three points) and 63 per cent believe it will affect them personally (an increase of five points).

Exactly. The only people trying to bring disgrace upon the scientific community aren’t the scientists who had their private emails hacked or are attacked in public or in the media for their research…it is the hackers, the quote miners, and the corporate owned politicians are who eating this shit up and trying to smear the tonnes of research about AGW. And don’t even get me started on the trolls and the Glenn Beck black helicopter crowd and their “theories” about AGW. They’re just insane and full of shit.
Rest assured bizarrobrain, there is no way I plan to just “whisk them up to heaven.” I designed your species with more intellectual processing capacity than any other on this planet. Elsewhere of course, I have some interesting results that would shame you, but that’s another topic. For Imhofe, Wildweasel et. al. there will be repercussions. We always get a big laugh up here when the word “conservative” is mentioned as a political theory because, in essence, the people who espouse this garbage do anything but “conserve.” By the way, if you see an electric car with a bumper sticker that says: “Stop wasting my planet!” give a little honk and tell your friends you saw me.

why not just drink highway air and highway water?
June 9th, 2010 at 3:11 pmThere are actually three distinct groups asserting that climate change is a hoax.
First there is the holier than thou crowd. Climate change inconveniently interferes with that whole rapture thing. If the ever come around to believe that climate change is real they will have to declare that God is pissed off – blaming the usual suspects like gays.
Then there is the conservative corporate crowd. The deny global warming because protecting the environment is going to cost them money. In other words, profits now – f^ck the future. These are the same people who created and manipulate the Tea Party dimwits. They created the “huge debt for our grandchildren” talking point.
Of course, if we don’t save the planet future generations might not have to worry about that debt.
The third group are the fatalists – mostly GOPers who accept climate change but say that doing something about it is too expensive. They also make the ridiculous claim that our efforts don’t matter because poor countries will continue to be polluters.
June 9th, 2010 at 3:11 pmcome on, walk the walk or talk the talk. if your not for clean air stop drinking spring water and start sucking the fumes factories give off.
June 9th, 2010 at 3:14 pmThe fact that so many of these animals are so willing to characterize what is, after all, an extremely well established scientific fact as a “hoax” is testament to nothing but their own unbounded depravity and utter lack of even the barest scintilla of ordinary integrity.
It requires no more effort than what is necessary for barely sensate consciousness to discover the facts,
no more intelligence than a remedial 5th grader to understand the facts,
and no more integrity than a cockroach to accurately report the facts of climate change.
Yet the conservatards and reich-wingers simply cannot manage to do so.

June 9th, 2010 at 3:19 pmProgressive Activism: What Works
While progressives have had some successes around the edges, it’s largely been Sherman’s March to the Sea for the corporate agenda during the Clinton-Bush-Obama years. Nothing progressives have achieved can compare to NAFTA, the lucrative wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the Bush tax cuts, and the bank/insurance industry/PhRMA bailouts. Now Congress is preparing to dismantle the New Deal, selectively defaulting on Treasury bonds issued to the Social Security trust fund — targeting American senior citizens in this sudden compulsion to reduce the deficit.
I only know of one action that has really caused Obama to reverse course dramatically and relent on something he didn’t want to do — and that was when Dan Choi, Jim Pietrangelo, GetEqual and other LGBT activists gave the finger to their veal pen overlords (and the members of Congress who handle them), publicly heckled and embarrassed Obama, and chained themselves to the fence of the White House.
The White House response may not be sufficient, but the pressure is working.

That seems to be a common thing, at least here in America. Political ideology has pretty much blended with and replaced religion for conservatives so you end up with this psychotic mess of a belief system. I’m not sure who pisses me off more, the politicians, the propagandists or the corporate apologists that flood progressive sites and environmentalists sites.
I’m not placing the full blame on them, they’re annoying as all f***ing hell but they’re not to fully blame. Though I place most of the blame on the corporate a**holes who seem hell bent on destroying our planet, we all kinda are to blame. We need excellent legislation, green sources of energy and yet most people seem unwilling to do anything other than send some e-mails, make a few phone calls, and the like. As far as I can see, nobody is marching in the streets yet, nobody is willing to passionately work towards electing environmentally sensitive leaders that have spines. Nobody seems willing to embark on large-scale protests and boycotts (e.g., of BP or any of the other oil companies and their apologists like Inhofe), and not all that many people even take the time to participate in the once-every-six-month climate rallies. In my view, we need to do much more than we are currently doing: much more.

Yeah, the bulk of the data has been public domain for some time now. I believe there are pieces of the HADCRUT data set that are proprietary (that’s the Hadley and East Anglia Climate Research Unit). But their data is not as good as NASA GISS or NOAA because they do not take the Arctic into consideration. (Their argument is that the data tracking points are too “thin”, so rather than interpolate they simply ignore the Arctic altogether.)
The only way deniers can even pretend to have a case is by violating every single standard not only of scientific methodology, but of critical thinking as well.
June 9th, 2010 at 3:42 pmBoycotts , civil disobedience and the threat of a general strike is about the only strategy that stands any real chance of success .
Non violent non cooperation ! We need to do some real planning here !
Lets get started !!!
June 9th, 2010 at 3:48 pmWe should start with BP . Ask for everyone reachable to boycott the company . Go to the gas stations that sell it’s commodity with info about how to switch distributors and warn them that their distributor will be nationally boycotted from all sides !
Start in the gulf coast states heavily and make arrangements with a company (citgo ?) that can replace BP and maybe even at a discount .
Jane is a perfect spokesperson and democracy now is a good place to go to get the message out immediately !
We need to enlist the help of celebrity well known to the pop culture and take the boycott to the rest of the world .
June 9th, 2010 at 3:48 pmWe should take down BP and then move on to Exxon !
Lets turn this into a mass mobilization effort .
The effort could culminate in a constitutional amendment striking down corporate personhood and create public financing of campaigns .
