A close friend on TrojanWire attended the Lane Kiffin Heritage Golf Classic on Monday at Coto de Caza Golf and Racquet Club. Here are his thoughts after spending some time with the coaches and listening to what they had to say about this upcoming season:

The entire coaching staff attended the tournament and our friend had a good chance to talk with many of them. The coaching staff is large in numbers with former players like Kerry Colbert and Sammy Knight helping out. He got a sense that the entire group is fired up and excited to change a few things while keeping the basics that Pete Carroll brought to the program.

After meeting Ed Orgeron, he was very impressed. He said the guy is an absolute stud and if he didn’t know any better he felt Orgeron was as much of the head coach as Kiffin in many ways and Kiffin supports it.

He got a chance to talk with Mark Jackson who is a great guy and very close with Lane Kiffin. Both of them came into the USC program the same year.

He also got to meet Monte Kiffin who is nothing short of a football God and a “great guy to boot.” Mark Jackson told our friend that Monte will have the defense playing better than ever with his schemes and every kid will love playing for him.

Here are a few highlights from the Q &A; session with Kiffin. Even though it was a USC friendly crowd, our buddy thought Kiffin did an excellent job handling all the questions. He doesn’t have the same charisma as Pete Carroll, but he does answer questions honestly and gave a few great answers.

Lane was asked which position he is most impressed with. He quickly answered that our d-line is by far the deepest position and every spot is two deep. He said our d-line quality and depth is the one position right now that has the depth of the 2005 team.

Pete Carroll comments on the draft, picking up LenDale and pissing off Taylor Mays in this ESPN video interview with Suzy Kolber. Of course, Mays is hurt by Carroll's selection of safety Earl Thomas at no. 14, instead of himself (who waited until pick no. 49). As reported by USA Today:

"It was alarming with who he took as a safety," Mays said in a conference call tonight with 49ers reporters, hinting he thought he'd be reuniting with Carroll in the Pacific Northwest. "I understand it's a business, but you should be honest. That's all I'm asking for."

In response to Mays' comments, Carroll had this to say: "I love Taylor, he's one of my guys forever, and I know he's upset a little bit. But I don't mind it because I know how competitive he is, he wanted to get picked as high as possible...but unfortunately for us we've got to play against him, in fact we have to play against him in the opener, and [chuckle] I think he'll be ready for me."

With LenDale reunited with Carroll in Seattle, the Titans were left without a bruising back. They need some "Smash" to complement Chris Johnson's "Dash". Well, they may have just found it. Meet the Johnsons. In a supremely classy move, head coach Jeff Fisher has picked up Stafon Johnson in free agency.

Johnson, who had led the Trojans in touchdowns for two years in a row, was nearly killed in a weight lifting accident midway through last season. What would likely have been a fourth to fifth round pick, Johnson was brought to the brink of death. But he fought on, regaining his strength and never giving up his dream. Many said he would not be able to play again, but Johnson shocked us all when he declared himself eligible for the NFL draft. Now his dream is realized. And with LenDale out, Stafon Johnson has a real chance to win a spot on the roster, and play alongside fellow draftee, wide receiver Damian Williams.

We at TrojanWire applaud the Titans organization for making a gutsy move. We applaud Stafon Johnson for his strength. And with that, we will leave you with the first sentence Johnson spoke, a month after his accident:

His voice was raspy but strong enough. The words sounded painful, but Johnson only felt hoarse. Everyone hung on the second set of first words in Johnson's life. He echoed the last words his late grandfather spoke to him. "God has a plan," Johnson said. "Run, Stafon, run."

Joe lucks out. Joins Mark Sanchez on a high profile team in a great city. Gives Trojans pause for which NFL team to claim their own.

Hopefully he can play like one.

Because if this 4th round (100th overall) pick can get past some personality issues and play like a professional, he could be a real threat to NFL QBs.
