Mike Mullen: Iran Attack 'The Last Option'

Mullen Iran Attack

Wired:

We are all screwed if Iran gets a nuke. And we may be just as screwed if the United States attacks Iran to keep Tehran from getting that nuke.

Okay, I'm paraphrasing a bit. But that's the core of the message from America's top military officer, who reiterated his canyon-deep reservations about any military solution to the Iranian nuclear crisis. Sure, such strikes might set back Tehran's atomic weapons program -- for a while. But the "unintended consequences" of a hit on Iran's nuclear facilities could easily outweigh the benefits of that delay, Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Admiral Mike Mullen told a forum at Columbia University.

Why everybody think that we are all screwed if Iran will get a nuke?

So many countries have them - Pakistan and India,North Korea, Israel (and doesn't even have balls to admit it), nobody ever used them (except US but that's a different story). They need nuke as a playing card not a weapon, they know that using it means their end - the end with a bang, but end nevertheless.

I think we should rather prepare mentally for the quite possible future with nuclear Iran, so we won't panic and do something stupid when the time comes.

Have a comprehensive energy policy that doesn't rely on oil and defund the money to the region to the point where they have to come to the negotiating table. More electric cars, more light rail, more solar, more wind, more bio-generated energy. Stay away from petroleum based plastics, put tariffs on oil.

Starve them of money and the rest of the terrorist funding nations like Saudia Arabia.

Volcano is belching the dust of US safety from European terrorists, in the event we should launch an attack.

The solution is simply to make the reason for nuclear weapons to go away, that is achieve peace in the region. Seeking advice from the military is just wrong, peace can be achieved without attacking or having a crippling embargo. We need to defund them so that they can not continue to war or build a bomb. And that includes Iraq, Afghanistan, Egypt, Jordan, Israel, Pakistan and India. The only reason they have the money is because of oil or the foreign aid of the US or other countries for military hardware. The solution, tariffs on oil so high that the world will use an alternative energy and the wealth from the oil will stop. And secondly, cut the foreign military aid. From the art of war, a long war can never be sustained, there are never enough resources available. Unfortunately, our largest corporations are making tons of money and don't want change.

How many wars has Iran started lately? As I recall the last one they were in was started by Saddam Hassan with our backing. Then there was that hostage taking thing. You know the one when we replaced there democratically elected president with a corporate dictator shill. They rebelled and tock hostages they later released. (Do you think if that happened here the teaparty would give back the Irans and let those that had worked with them live?) So they hate Israel. Ok. The real question is would they committee suicide to be destroy Israel? You know Israel who has nukes they aint suppose to (you know the same thing we went to war with Iraq for.) Its crazy that we even having this argument. Nukes are not good for anybody to have, but cant tell a man him and his enemy aint suppose to have a lethal weapon, turn a blind eye while his enemy gets a lethal weapon then have people believe your about law and order when he tries to. Going to war with Iran would be so dumb on so many levels, and would only result in death, the solidifying of our current enemies, the hardcore recruiting of all the fence sitting casual America haters, and trillions in profited siphoned tax free to war profiteers. Which of course is what the hole thing comes down to.

Well actually, all the rhetoric coming out of Iran is against the 'Zionist Entity' and not Israel. They are just against the current regime (,a.k.a. advocate regime change ...seemed to have heard that term before...) which discriminates against Palestinians and their Arab population and treats them as second class citizens.

Halliburton, Blackwater and KBR embody the dreaded military industrial complex Eisenhower warned about. Under no-bid contracts approved by republicans, KBR and their subsidiaries were paid billions for shoddy construction work that resulted in soldiers being seriously injured and electrocuted; based on this fact alone, the republican party of “no compassion” should be renamed the party of “murderers.” So, why are KBR officials not facing indictment? Answer: from 2002 to 2007, they funneled millions in payoffs to republicans to look the other way. No wonder republicans cringe whenever anyone mentions "truth commission." The republican expectation is that unethical and criminal activities committed while in office should never be investigated, because to do so would somehow diminish America’s creditability, which is the exact same argument put forth by republicans seeking to prevent Reagan from being indicted for Iran-Contra. Whether Bush and Cheney fabricated and manipulated intelligence to justify war and funnel billions to republican cronies is relevant; whether Bush authorized torture in defiance of the Geneva Conventions is relevant; whether republican legislated deregulation led to America’s financial meltdown is relevant; and whether republican fear mongers are concocting lies to scare Americans into blindly accepting an ineffectual, antiquated and elitist political agenda is also relevant. Under the Bush/Cheney Doctrine, John Bolton misled America and North Korea became a nuclear power. Through unvetted, no-bid defense contracts, the Bush Administration financed Blackwater, a radical group whose sole purpose is to pillage and plunder.

Lest we forget, it was Halliburton under Cheney's leadership that SOLD Iran the Gas Centrifuge technology they're using to enrich uranium back in the 90's. Talk about arming the enemies of tomorrow...

It was actually an "enemy of today" back in the 90's since there were at least monthly rallies in Tehran with crowds chanting 'death to America'.

The rhetoric has cooled down quite a bit since then (actually it has been cooling down since US attacked and took down their arch enemy Saddam Hussein!)

In an effort to distract from genuine concerns surrounding the political turmoil and tribal anarchy transfixing Afghanistan and Iraq, the GOP would now like to ban as terrorist propaganda photos taken at the infamous Abu Ghraib prison depicting Bush/Cheney sanctioned torture. The republican capacity to suspend and simultaneously create reality is impressive, yet hypocritical and scary. In fact, the Bush/Cheney excursion into Iraq to spread capitalism under the guise of democracy continues to serve as a constantly evolving and effective recruitment tool for Islamic extremist. While it’s true that the release of additional Abu Ghraib photos would jeopardize the safety of American troops worldwide, and further contribute to the destabilization of a region deemed strategically necessary, few republican leaders, however, spoke out to condemn the use of torture when it was actually occurring; instead, they backed away and, when pressed to respond, dismissively described the torturous acts as inconsequential, isolated and attributable to a few rogue soldiers acting with no official endorsement, which we now know is untrue. In fact, the decision to use torture originated deep within the murky recesses of the Bush/Cheney Whitehouse. So, at this juncture, republicans are attempting to rewrite their epilogue, abdicate culpability, regain favor, and distance themselves from the atrocities attributable to the Bush/ Cheney years, a corrupt period in history when republicans controlled both houses of Congress, succumbed to barbarism, abandoned integrity, and wrongly believed their power to be unassailable and without consequence.

After eight years of following the Bush/Cheney cabal, government under Obama can’t be trusted? Yeah, right! Republicans like Gingrich asked the American public to trust Bush about the intelligence concerning the Iraq War and look what happen. At this juncture, republicans are attempting to rewrite their epilogue, abdicate culpability, regain favor, and distance themselves from the atrocities attributable to the Bush/Cheney years, a period in history when republicans controlled both houses of Congress, succumbed to barbarism, abandoned integrity, and wrongly believed their power to be unassailable and without consequence. So, in the final analysis, the only kind of government Gingrich wants Americans to trust is a republican led government. Yeah, wrong!

Deterrence, with both Iran and Israel with nuclear capabilities, would last much longer than attacking Iran’s nuclear development.

Nuclear deterrence is a strategy that has proven fail-safe for nearly sixty years now.
Iranians should have the right to arm themselves to dissuade Israel to perpetuate Iran to third-world status.

So, don’t Iranians have the duty to protect and defend themselves? Yes, they do.
Don’t Iranians have the right to develop and to the pursuit of happiness? Yes, they do.

I do not want my country to attack a reasonable culture as Iran. It is a lot more convenient from every point, to abandon this absurd, primitive, and inhumane Jewish/Muslim war in which we’re bizarrely immersed.

Logic?

Nuclear weapons = happiness?

We have more nuclear weapons than any other country, are we proportionately happy.
Have you seen the headlines, lately?

What are the odds of Israel attacking Iran if Iran behaves, stops supplying arms
to the Palestinians? For that matter what are the odds of Israel attacking Palestinians
if not continually provoked by rockets and suicide bombers?

Israel gets the heat for being better armed and organized with conventional weapons
which they employ to deter terrorists, when attacked.

Hey everybody, everything's going to be fine.
It seems we have a military genius here, calls himself "hibeam", and he has figured out how to fix this little Iran problem.
It seems if we just go all Harry Truman on 'em, and nuke them back to molten rock, everything will be fixed.
The simplicity is staggering...why didn't anyone else think of this?!

patches12, did you forget your meds again?

The idea behind Perpetual War is to find nations not too big to swallow more troops & weaponry than can be easily convoyed to that region. Iran is clearly over-the-top and like Iraq, has a population used to fighting total war. The 10-year debacle with Iraq resulted in hundreds of thousands of casualties and billions upon billions of damage.

No, the MIC wants Afghanistan as it's sinkhole -- lots of land, without a teeming educated population trained in firing weaponry. A much better choice for America's vampire corporations to suck out the life blood.
