Freshly Ground Black People: World's Worst Typo Leaves Publisher Reeling

Freshly Ground Black People Pasta Bible Cookbook T

SYDNEY — An Australian publisher is reprinting 7,000 cookbooks over a recipe for pasta with "salt and freshly ground black people."

Penguin Group Australia's head of publishing, Bob Sessions, acknowledged the proofreader for the Pasta Bible should have picked up the error, but called it nothing more than a "silly mistake."

The "Pasta Bible" recipe for spelt tagliatelle with sardines and prosciutto was supposed to call for black pepper.

"We're mortified that this has become an issue of any kind and why anyone would be offended, we don't know," he told The Sydney Morning Herald for a story printed Saturday.

"We've said to bookstores that if anyone is small-minded enough to complain about this ... silly mistake, we will happily replace (the book) for them."

The reprint will cost Penguin 20,000 Australian dollars ($18,500), but books already in stores will not be recalled because doing so would be "extremely hard," Sessions said.

There was no answer at Penguin's offices Sunday.

True story: After Muhammad Ali (then known as Cassius Marcellus Clay) won an Olympic Gold Medal in 1960, he returned to his hometown of Louisville, Kentucky. He was refused service at a local Diner as the Owner told him: "sorry, we don't serve Black people here." To which Ali replied, "that's good because I don't eat them."

Usually black people complain when you put them in the grinder.

If they used Google, they would have caught the typo. Google is very smart at guessing what we think. The other day I started my search by typing "How to..." and Google finished by suggesting exactly what I had in mind. How Google knew? Beats me!And it had nothing to do with ties or kisses.

Way back in my high school days, our home economics teacher gave us a recipe to prepare that called for "sliced cartots". It was very funny to us, of course, and we accused her of trying to make cannibals of us. : )

Can't imagine why people would be offended by the thought of ground up black people. Because Australians are so well known for their tolerance toward people of color.

This was no accident, this was some racist proof readers idea of a joke.

There's a space between "Shut" and "'em". "Proofreaders" is one word.

Many years ago, I was stirring together a pizza dough (the fact that it was "pizza-in-a-box" will tell you just how long ago) and reading the directions on the side of the box, which read "Stir with fork until forks disappear." Once the initial jolt of "HUH?" wore off, it was obvious that the recipe meant "until lumps disappear," but it was good for a chuckle.

Now, my point is, this seems like another obvious misprint. Misprints happen all the time, routinely -- even now that a new book costs $30 or more (and cookbooks a lot more), errors in punctuation, spelling, and some times sense still happen all the time. Whether it's due to a malfunctioning spell checker, or a bleary-eyed proofreader, no matter what is to blame, I really doubt that there was any harmful intent here. I'm also pretty sure that most cooks reading "black people" in this instance would know that it should read "black pepper" just as I knew not to stand there stirring pizza dough until the fork disappeared.

(Of course, had it been published in, say, Mississippi or Alabama or Texas, there's a 50-50 chance it meant what it says.)

This answers the question........

"WHAT DO TEA-PARTIERS USE FOR SEASONING?"

.... actually, it's obviously a function of sloppy editing, where spellcheck chose "people" as a correction to a typing error, and no one caught it.
