Though some are still skeptical this is an April Fools' Day joke that's overstayed its welcome, AtariAge forumer Tanner claims he's unearthed a never-before-seen box in astonishingly good condition for super rare Atari 2600 game Air Raid. He also has a copy of the game, only a handful of which are known to exist.Ostensibly a hack of Wickstead Design's Space Jockey, Air Raid is considered by many collectors as the "holy grail" of Atari 2600 games. Very little is known about the game's developer, Men-A-Vision, and it's rarity is such that the last eBay auction for just the game's light blue, T-handle cartridge ended at $2,850.
Tanner explained how he first came across the game decades ago and rediscovered its box recently:
"I clearly remember buying this game back in 1984 or 1985. My mother had taken me to a Tuesday Morning store in Arlington Texas. It was near the corner of Arkansas Lane and Medline Drive. Not too long after I purchased it, I got an Atari 800 and stopped playing the 2600.
Since then, the Air Raid cartridge has been boxed up in my garage along with my 2600 and other games for over 20 years. The game box was stored separately and I just found it. I had no idea that I still had these game boxes."
Tanner posted his original thread a couple days prior to April Fool's and has since had the game authenticated in person by Atari Age's owner, who believes the cartridge and box to be real. Still, $6500+ for a game? Crazy.
Having already undergone restructuring and firings after the release of the lamentable Iron Man and Golden Axe: Beast Rider, Sega's studio has now been shut entirely (smart money would suggest that Iron Man 2 is as god awful as its predecessor, despite Sega's best efforts to turn the studio around).
A brief statement from Sega read as follows:
SEGA of America is sad to announce the closure of SEGA Studios San Francisco. It is an immensely talented studio and we wish all the best to all of the staff in all their future endeavours. Moving forward, SEGA will continue to pursue external development opportunities all over the world and will continue to grow the renowned SEGA brand.
Clearly.
Just remember to factor in the cost of a gas mask and hand sanitiser before booking - we wouldn't want you to contract the PAX Pox like the folks who frequented the last PAX West.
The new crop of HTML5 web browsers are capable of some pretty amazing things, and several of our engineers decided to take some 20% time to see how far we could push them. The result? An HTML5 port of Id's Quake II game engine! We started with the existing Jake2 Java port of the Quake II engine, then used the Google Web Toolkit (along with WebGL, WebSockets, and a lot of refactoring) to cross-compile it into Javascript. You can see the results in the video above -- we were honestly a bit surprised when we saw it pushing over 30 frames per second on our laptops (your mileage may vary)!
It's still early days for WebGL, so you won't be able to run it without a bleeding edge browser, but if you'd like you can check out the code and give it a whirl yourself!

In the land of the here and now, Red Faction: Guerrilla is on sale on the Games For Windows Marketplace, just in time for the release of a new PC patch.
If you're interested in trying Dwarf Fortress, I'd suggest starting here to conquer the beyond-steep learning curve.
The classic arcade FPS Serious Sam: The First Encounter is reborn in glorious high-definition for legions of long-time fans and a whole new generation of gamers around the world. Featuring dazzling visuals and revamped design, gamers take control of the legendary Sam ‘Serious’ Stone as he is sent back through time to ancient Egypt to battle the overwhelming forces of Notorious Mental and the Sirian army.
I also don't like Aussies anymore because their whining about not being able to play a game that they purchased may have caused a patch which has knocked me out of the game. ;)
Oddly enough, I was working on our review of The Settlers 7 when the game died on me.
“Reaching 10 million registered players on the eve of Free Realms’ first birthday is an incredibly exciting event for SOE and our passionate online community,” said John Smedley, president of SOE. “Millions of gamers have confirmed that the genre we pioneered over 11 years ago with the original EverQuest continues to evolve and expand to include new styles of gameplay that reach a wider audience than ever before.”As early as mid-April, players will see party decorations in various areas of Free Realms that signal the kick-off of the birthday festivities. Celebratory live community events, two new combat minigames, party hats and commemorative t-shirts for player avatars are just some of the new extras to look forward to. A new series of 15 birthday quests will also be added. Players are urged to participate in a large scale cake fight in order to help prevent the ruin of the Free Realms birthday bash by Cakenstein, a colossal monster made from cake recipes gone wrong.

This is the newest TV Spot for Free Realms, called "Party Time".

Massively multiplayer games are not new. The first true massively multiplayer game was a text-only virtual world called MUD, put together by Richard Bartle and Roy Trubshaw in 1978. This little window of dizzying text descriptions was a far cry visually from the seductively lush 3D virtual worlds of today, but it was enough. Enough to get the genre started, and enough to get armchair designers across the world to imagine the possibilities, and debate philosophical matters of game design. One of these questions, still asked today, is whether or not massively multiplayer environments should strive to be games or to be worlds.
All 20 races have their personal style, tactics and unique skills which give each game a diversity rarely seen in a strategy game. There are also new and more impressive stadiums to welcome all these new teams. From the snowy Norse stadium to the creepy interior of a crypt, the change of scenery is guaranteed.A new Story mode is introduced, in which players will play as a freelance coach. They will have to lead several famous teams and take up many challenges through a story revealing the origins of Blood Bowl, the Old World and its many races that relentlessly compete with each other in merciless games. A newly scripted tutorial will teach all new comers everything they need to know about coaching a Blood Bowl team!
