Suicidal Ninja-Robots Invade Steam
- BERJAYA 0 Comments
Indie developers Beatnik Games have announced the release of its debut game. Plain Sight is now available on Steam and other digital platforms for $9.99.

A tongue-in-cheek multiplayer arcade game that revels in its uniqueness, Plain Sight casts players as insano suicidal ninja robots who must fly through space, trusty katana in hand, across 13 multiplayer maps, battling up to 20 players on a mission to nab more and more tasty, tasty energy with each enemy you slay. As you get more energy, you change color and get bigger, stronger and brighter, but to convert your hard earned energy into game-winning points, you must do the unthinkable: blow yourself up! The more opponents you take out in the explosion, the higher the multiplier, the higher your score! Upgrade your ninja robot, respawn and do it all over again.

The Morning Juberish
- BERJAYA 11 Comments
Ahoy! Happy Easter Monday, yet another opportunity to eat chocolate covered rabbits. You know the TV spot for the cat treats where the guy tosses a treat in the air and the cat jumps like two stories to snatch it out of the air? My dog did something similar yesterday. Friend threw a ball off a raised porch assuming dog would chase it via stairs. Instead dog jumped over porch rail. I was like, yay, splattered dog on Easter Day. But he just limped a bit for a minute. Dumbass. Hey! Ever wonder . o O how to cook bacon with a machine gun?

How did you spend your Easter weekend?

Super Rare Atari 2600 Game On Sale
- BERJAYA 14 Comments
Got $6500 spare to make an investment? If so, you can now bid on a copy of Air Raid, an extremely rare Atari 2600 game. What elevates this particular copy to Super Rare status is the inclusion of a well preserved box, which is unheard of. And with another seven days left on the auction the price will likely go even higher, so dig deep down the back of the sofa if you're interested in becoming the most envied Atari 2600 collector in the world:

Though some are still skeptical this is an April Fools' Day joke that's overstayed its welcome, AtariAge forumer Tanner claims he's unearthed a never-before-seen box in astonishingly good condition for super rare Atari 2600 game Air Raid. He also has a copy of the game, only a handful of which are known to exist.

Ostensibly a hack of Wickstead Design's Space Jockey, Air Raid is considered by many collectors as the "holy grail" of Atari 2600 games. Very little is known about the game's developer, Men-A-Vision, and it's rarity is such that the last eBay auction for just the game's light blue, T-handle cartridge ended at $2,850.

Tanner explained how he first came across the game decades ago and rediscovered its box recently:

"I clearly remember buying this game back in 1984 or 1985. My mother had taken me to a Tuesday Morning store in Arlington Texas. It was near the corner of Arkansas Lane and Medline Drive. Not too long after I purchased it, I got an Atari 800 and stopped playing the 2600.

Since then, the Air Raid cartridge has been boxed up in my garage along with my 2600 and other games for over 20 years. The game box was stored separately and I just found it. I had no idea that I still had these game boxes."

Tanner posted his original thread a couple days prior to April Fool's and has since had the game authenticated in person by Atari Age's owner, who believes the cartridge and box to be real. Still, $6500+ for a game? Crazy.

Sega Shuts San Fran Studio, Formerly Secret Level
- BERJAYA 1 Comment
Having completed work on Iron Man 2, Sega's San Francisco development employees were handed their pink slips yesterday. No, it wasn't the most tasteless April Fool's gag ever, they really had been fired, less than four years since Sega took over the studio, once known as Secret Level.

Having already undergone restructuring and firings after the release of the lamentable Iron Man and Golden Axe: Beast Rider, Sega's studio has now been shut entirely (smart money would suggest that Iron Man 2 is as god awful as its predecessor, despite Sega's best efforts to turn the studio around).

A brief statement from Sega read as follows:

SEGA of America is sad to announce the closure of SEGA Studios San Francisco. It is an immensely talented studio and we wish all the best to all of the staff in all their future endeavours. Moving forward, SEGA will continue to pursue external development opportunities all over the world and will continue to grow the renowned SEGA brand.

Clearly.

Quake II Running In HTML5 Browsers
- BERJAYA 14 Comments
Well, make that Chrome, a single browser, as this technical marvel was made possible by a bunch of Google engineers working in their sanctioned brainstorming time, which typically results in a new Google Lab toy for GMail:

The new crop of HTML5 web browsers are capable of some pretty amazing things, and several of our engineers decided to take some 20% time to see how far we could push them. The result? An HTML5 port of Id's Quake II game engine!

We started with the existing Jake2 Java port of the Quake II engine, then used the Google Web Toolkit (along with WebGL, WebSockets, and a lot of refactoring) to cross-compile it into Javascript. You can see the results in the video above -- we were honestly a bit surprised when we saw it pushing over 30 frames per second on our laptops (your mileage may vary)!

It's still early days for WebGL, so you won't be able to run it without a bleeding edge browser, but if you'd like you can check out the code and give it a whirl yourself!

Want to try it yourself? Head here!

Settlers 7 Giving Me Major Nerd Rage
- BERJAYA 74 Comments
So there I was, chillin' like a villain playing The Settlers 7, something that Australian consumers have not been able to do since the release of the game. I was mucking about with some settings and made the asshat move of restarting the game, which apparently may have prompted a patch. A patch that I can't find any information on, but a patch that players are screaming about none the less. Possibly a patch to help the folk down under finally play the game? Who knows. As it turns out, now the rest of the world can't play either. So far I haven't been very opinionated about DRM, I wanted to experience it first-hand. Now I have. DRM can totally suck nutcustard.

I also don't like Aussies anymore because their whining about not being able to play a game that they purchased may have caused a patch which has knocked me out of the game. ;)

Oddly enough, I was working on our review of The Settlers 7 when the game died on me.

Free Realms Goes... Diamond, Plus New TV Spot
- BERJAYA 4 Comments
I don't think I ever recall hearing the words "X Game Goes Diamond" before, but Sony Online Entertainment’s Free Realms has surpassed 10 million registered players, hot on the heels of its first birthday. I think there's some mind-control at work here.

“Reaching 10 million registered players on the eve of Free Realms’ first birthday is an incredibly exciting event for SOE and our passionate online community,” said John Smedley, president of SOE. “Millions of gamers have confirmed that the genre we pioneered over 11 years ago with the original EverQuest continues to evolve and expand to include new styles of gameplay that reach a wider audience than ever before.”

As early as mid-April, players will see party decorations in various areas of Free Realms that signal the kick-off of the birthday festivities. Celebratory live community events, two new combat minigames, party hats and commemorative t-shirts for player avatars are just some of the new extras to look forward to. A new series of 15 birthday quests will also be added. Players are urged to participate in a large scale cake fight in order to help prevent the ruin of the Free Realms birthday bash by Cakenstein, a colossal monster made from cake recipes gone wrong.

Star Wars: The Old Republic - The Third Element
- BERJAYA 10 Comments
It's time for the weekly Star Wars: The Old Republic offering from BioWare. This week Principal Lead Systems Designer, Damion Schubert, blogs about MUDs and MMOs, game philosophy, community and player interaction.

BERJAYA BERJAYA

Massively multiplayer games are not new. The first true massively multiplayer game was a text-only virtual world called MUD, put together by Richard Bartle and Roy Trubshaw in 1978. This little window of dizzying text descriptions was a far cry visually from the seductively lush 3D virtual worlds of today, but it was enough. Enough to get the genre started, and enough to get armchair designers across the world to imagine the possibilities, and debate philosophical matters of game design. One of these questions, still asked today, is whether or not massively multiplayer environments should strive to be games or to be worlds.

A new Story mode is introduced, in which players will play as a freelance coach.
