"...Well, it's, it's because we didn't have enough people when we went into Iraq. Truth be known, we didn't have the size of force necessary to do what we were trying to do in Iraq..." - Senator Claire McCaskill (D) Somebody should have told that to Donald Rumsfeld. Oh, wait... Senator Claire McCaskill (D) was a guest on The Rachel Maddow Show last night, discussing contractor oversight in... ...

"...we're going to put in place new rules so that big banks and financial institutions will pay for the bad decisions they make - not taxpayers. Simply put, this means no more taxpayer bailouts...." - President Barack Obama Senator Kit Bond (r - lame duck) and all of the republicans in the Senate signed on [pdf] to block that financial regulatory reform (you know, the lack thereof which... ...

Via The Wonk Room, Claire McCaskil is a charter memeber of a new Senate group which has coalesced around energy policy: These "Brown Dog" senators - [Sherrod] Brown , Debbie Stabenow (D-MI), Carl Levin (D-MI), Robert Casey Jr. (D-PA), Arlen Specter (D-PA), Mark Warner (D-VA), Claire McCaskill (D-MO), Evan Bayh (D-IN), Kay Hagan (D-NC), Robert Byrd (D-WV) - have been among the most skeptical of.....

I frequently give Claire McCaskill a hard time, and at the moment I am ripping into her, I mean it intensely. I have told her that she should consider this "cover from the left" and to keep doing exactly what she is doing, because truth be told, I couldn't even pass my own purity test, and I sure don't have the patience to deal with Mitch McConnell and a bunch of rabble like me giving her hell......

I have never been to Tokyo, but from the images and stories you see on TV, it seems like a highly energetic place with lots of cool high tech gadgets and electronic stuff mixed into the environment. Now St. Louis has something like that right here. At the corner of 8th and Olive, across the street from the Old Post Office and a block from the new Schnuck's Culinaria, there's an interactive v...

A bill passed in Missouri shows how ill-informed lawmakers are about state law, how little respect they have for women, and how little they actually know about real women’s lives. Written by Pamela Merritt for RHRealityCheck.org - News, commentary and community for reproductive health and justice. In case you haven't been following the race, Ed Martin, former chief of staff to the execrable Blunt Administration, is running against incumbent Russ Carnahan in Missouri's Third Congressional District. Ed Martin was with the Tea Party set from the beginning and has generally associated himself with the worst of their looniness. Yesterday, I noticed one of Martin's tweets where he alleged... ...

In a press release I just got from Robin Carnahan's campaign, Carnahan teed off on the idea of a national sales tax that Obama advisor Paul Volcker recently floated. I swear I'm not on the Robin Carnahan beat now, since my recent posts have dealt with her and her opponent, but this strikes me as an interesting move. Carnahan gets to distance herself from Obama, who isn't as popular in Missouri.....

Previously: Don't quit your day job Most of the candidates who have filed for State Auditor haven't submitted their first quarter 2010 campaign finance reports with the Missouri Ethics Commission yet (the reports are due soon). Assistant Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters-Baker was the only person to file for election in Missouri House District 39, a seat currently held by outgoing Rep. Beth Low and before that Marsha Campbell. So the city’s most liberal, politically active neighborhoods will have no choice to make this November. It’s surprising that the race for this [...]...

St. Louis is filled with neighborhood commercial service areas. We have hundreds if not thousands of small commercial buildings suitable for small businesses. Many of these buildings front wide boulevards with multiple lanes of fast moving traffic. Drivers in slower moving cars are more likley to notice and patronize neighborhood businesses. For wide streets like Natural Bridge, Page, Hamp...

Looks like we could be in for a long summer of racial and generational tensions. The problems associated with crowds of teens loitering in Westport seem to have migrated to the Country Club Plaza. Last night reportedly saw incidents of fights, property damage, pepper spray, and police helicopters. It’s a persistent story here in Kansas City. [...]...

There is a new highway sign up in the City of St. Louis on westbound I-44 just east of the Southwest Avenue exit. The sign directs drivers to "Historic Downtown Maplewood". For years, there has been a similar sign at 44 and Elm about historic old town Webster Groves. Southwest is one of the best streets in St. Louis, and now it's the preferred route to one of our region's coolest destination...

The Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated on April 4th, 1968, and the Kansas City riots started on April 8th. This view is taken from the corner of Washington Avenue and Memorial Drive. The corner is very much in the heart of downtown St. Louis. Despite the fact that you're already there, signs on the roads are plastered everywhere to direct drivers into downtown St. Louis and Memorial Drive. Dungeness crab is a rare treat. You can get it fresh out on the west coast, or frozen here in St. Louis. If you steam the frozen ones, they still taste very good. Served with melted butter, garlic, lemon, white wine and french bread and you have a great meal. More and more regional delicacies can be found here in St. Louis. It's a nice add-on to our quality of life. A Dungeness crab has...

In the early part of the last century, St. Louis was growing rapidly. Lots of buildings were going up and streets were being widened. In downtown Dutchtown, property values were increasing and the area was thriving with activity. One block south of Meremac, off an L-shaped alley on the west side of Virginia, there's a relic from those busy times. A family operated a tin shop up on Meramec....

This snug row of buildings along Broadway, just a little southwest of the Off Broadway night club, has always been one of my favorites. The grade of the street and the turn in the road reminds of the style of architecture you see all around Baltimore. Some say St. Louis is the "western-most eastern US city", and buildings like this show it. The historic collection is located in the Marine ...
