Japanese newspapers Nikkei and Asahi were all over today's 3DS announcement from Nintendo, providing details about the device Nintendo failed to offer in its somewhat curt press release. Most notably, Asahi says the portable's 3D output is possible without glasses thanks to a technology some gamers might already be familiar with: Sharp's parallax barrier LCD. Read More »
The DSi XL has yet to launch in the U.S., but that didn't stop Nintendo from announcing its successor today. The 3DS, a portable gaming device that features 3D effects without the need for special glasses, is scheduled to ship sometime before March 2011. Read More »

So it's with some excitement that Maxwell and his word-based antics are coming back to the DS later this fall. Gamers are spending more time playing online, and the PC remains the platform of choice for online games according to the latest report on videogames from the NPD Group. More than half of all gamers say they play games online, and those that do so log-on an average of eight hours per week. Read More »
Reminiscent of the baseball card rush of the 1980s, classic videogames are fast becoming highly valued collectibles. In early February, North Carolina eBay seller lace_thongs35 made headlines when her(?) copy of NES game Stadium Events sold for more than $13,000. Turns out that was just the tip of the pixelated iceberg. Last week, a Kansas man who read of the high-priced sale sold his own copy of Stadium Events for more than $41,000. Read More »
Publishing houses have long been interested in books based on videogames, evidenced most recently by Penguin's novel "Assassin's Creed Renaissance." Now it appears publishers want to flip the script and get involved with the creative side of videogame development. Read More »
A new study published in the March issue of the American Psychological Association's Psychological Bulletin states that violent videogames (VVGs) increase aggression, desensitize gamers to violence, and create anti-social behavior. It's shaping up to be the summer of Nintendo. At its Media Summit in San Francisco today, Nintendo announced it will help gamers usher in spring with the new DSi XL in March before unleashing heavy-hitters Mario and Samus on the market in May and June, respectively. Various sources are picking up on a recently-filed patent in which Nintendo reserves the right to make "game apparatus" which uses both an LCD screen and rumble-style sensory feedback. The natural leap of logic is that the Big N could well be planning to include such functionality in its new handheld system -- which is most likely going to be a true successor to the Nintendo DS. In January, Japanese newspaper The Asahi Shimbun interviewed Nintendo President Satoru Iwata and asked him about a successor to the DS handheld. Iwata replied that the DS successor would include an HD display and motion-capture capability. After the article was published, Iwata quickly claimed he was misquoted.
