Has the GTA series really peaked? Not by a long shot. But you won't hear that from analyst Ben Schachter:
"Given the strength of GTA IV in 2008, the question may seem misplaced, but our concern is that the very highly-rated new GTA content for Xbox as well as PSP and DS did not perform up to expectations in 2009," he said.

"Now, we very clearly understand that these do not represent 'true' new GTA titles. However, the fact is that these were compelling titles, attractively priced, and reasonably well-promoted, yet they fell relatively flat."

"We do not mean to pour salt on an open wound, but this does raise questions about the strength of packs for [Rockstar parent company] Take Two Entertainment's crown jewel. It is an issue we will monitor closely. We also note that we expect increased competition in the open-world action genre in 2010 and beyond."
Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter had a slightly different take:
"GTA IV was at least a 50 hour game, in contrast to the typical Call Of Duty which is a six to ten hour game. Almost anyone who bought COD finished it, and if they liked it they were interested in DLC," he said.

"On the other hand, my guess is that fewer than 20% of GTA owners finished the game so fewer were interested in DLC. I think that is a fair assessment, and don't think that the slow pace of DLC sales reflects poor performance for the franchise."

Wow, they compared GTA IV with Call of Duty? That's hardly a fair comparison. They're two different games that have two different focuses. Call of duty is a FPS with a focus on the multilayer, where GTA IV is a action/shooter/driver game with a focus on single player. Again, completely different games.

Wow, that COD4 remark hit the nail on the head. I'm a huge GTA fan, but I stopped half way through GTA4. I did, however; finish COD4, it was so short! It pissed me off at first, but now I recognize that it was a genius move. The reason I haven't bought the DLC is because I still have the other half of GTA4 to play, I also think this is the case with most people.

GTA4 wasn't a bad game, it had its flaws and while I like Niko I missed the sense of humor the other games had. I play games to get away from reality and the last thing I want in a world like GTA is to get lost in Liberty City like I get lost in Dallas (thank goodness for my GPS). I finished it, but it wasn't nearly as fun to play as GTA3 and Vice City. I never picked up the DLC's because somebody hasn't started up their single brain cell to realize that they forgot the PC community. I would love to get my hands on the DLC's for GTA4.

I don't know how you can compare GTA to COD series, as they are completely different game styles. Also, GTA is supposed to have a sense of humor. You won't see me laughing at a COD games (especially the last one as I refuse to buy another COD after MW2).

Personally, I look forward to the next GTA game as I have been a huge fan. I enjoyed GTA4 even though the vehicles were a nightmare to drive, I couldn't get anywhere without the GPS, police chases aren't nearly as fun as in the previous games (WHAT?!! I get a mile ahead of them and they stop the pursuit?!!), Dating still seems like a waste of my time, etc.

Other then that the characters were a lot of fun (a little dark a times, but a lot of fun..even though none of them were Tommy Vercetti), the world was huge and it was great exploring every little thing, the vehicles had a nice variety to them, the peds seemed far more alive then the other games, and Niko is probably one of the most interesting main characters in the series.

Might be a good idea to get those DLC's to the PC crowd ASAP!!!

I think it did peak....

If they want to get it back up there, they must include things that make the games fun.

Go play The Ballad of Gay Tony and you might find yourself a little more intrigued!

i agree with vicsrealms, if Rockstar hadn't pandered to Microsoft they may have more people playing the DLC. but they decided to tell PlayStation and PC owners to F off, "we'de rather take 50 million than have you as customers". i for one will never own an xbox and if one day Rockstar pulls there heads of there rears and decides to let non xbox people have the DLC then maybe, a big maybe, i will buy the DLC.

the last 2 years i've had a great deal of contempt over the exclusive DLC, and if Rockstar screws there customers with exclusive DLC in the next GTA game they will loose me as a customer, ya like they will be hurt by it, but i don't play enough games to justify having a counsol.

there are so many things i would like to say about this but its pointless rating, whats done is done, but for some reason gamefly doesn't need you to pay to be a member anymore (or they never have and i just kept clicking the wrong link to sign up). either way, there have been moments were i wanted to scream, especially at those that run this site when they post articles about the DLC and seem not to care about those who dont have an xbox

Yeah, it peaked....with San Andreas.

If only 20% completed the game that should tell you all you need to know. I think the Housers grew up and focused far too much making GTA realistic/mature/serious or whatever. Good job sucking the fun out of the game.

R* better bring back the perks/awards/toys, humor, and good music if they want to revive what was special about the earlier GTAs. Oh, and don't give PC gamers the shaft. Make the PC version as the benchmark with all the bells and whistles. Don't dumb it down for the sake of the consoles.

Follow my advice and you have a recipe for success.

I would have to disagree on peaking with San Andreas. I always thought Vice City was more of a crown jewel of GTA. I also wouldn't call San Andreas the last awesome GTA game either. Liberty City Stories was kinda cool, and Vice City stories was a lot of fun! But GTA IV went too far with the realism. When you take the fantasy out of a game, it's harder to do things you wouldn't do in real life. Rockstar needs to look back at the older games next time they plan to make a new one.

And as for the PC version being dumbbed down... I'm pretty sure it wasn't. It was set up to have the highest graphics, new features and everything, not to mention it's modable. And not to get anyone's hopes up but there are still rumors that the PC version will be getting the DLC, thanks to the latest patch.

And of course, Rockstar should avoid selling out again. They probably would have made that $50 million without Microsoft's help sooner or later.

As far as peaking with San Andreas, I just meant in terms of sales. I believe GTA IV has sold in the neighborhood of 13M where SA has sold around 30M between both consoles.

Yes, Vice City was the Housers best work. I know the graphics weren't anything to compare to IV, but I didn't play it for graphics. I played it and loved it because it was fun. I think 3 and SA were great, though they weren't my fav. IV is my least favorite. They need to turn the game over to someone younger who can focus on the fun aspects instead try to make it super realistic.

IV's environment is great, but they squandered it. You can't do much with it and the ammo caps are dumb. Very easy to put down IMO.

Saying GTA peaked at IV is like saying GTA peaked at SA because Advance, LCS, and VCS didn't do as good. When the next major GTA hits the stores, it will surpass IV.

Why are people saying IV is the wrong way to make a game? Don't you like the improved combat, improved guns, improved cars, improved animations, basically improved everything? I always wanted GTA to upgrade and IV is the perfect upgrade for GTA. I don't know why you don't consider IV as fun because it's massively fun for me. It is unlike any other GTAs or any other games I've played and that is what make IV the best GTA I've ever played. We DO NOT need another SA or SR in the market. IV is the best Rockstar did and they can do better in the future. If you value quantity more than quality, then it's pointless for me to keep talking.

I'm not knocking the animation. It was a huge improvement, but frankly I wish they would spent more time and resources on the AI and perks/rewards/side missions/humor. Remember, Rockstar had $100M to play with. Too much in my mind to overlook the things that made GTA was it was [the fun, light-hearted approach with not-so-realistic action and somewhat-silly (at times) side missions].

I'd like to see the next GTA being not so realistic. Bring back the silliness and light-hearted humor. There is no reason why you can't incorporate the improved animation and graphics of IV with the "old-school" GTA feel.

Everything is serious now and the old GTAs provided a greater release from reality. That's what I miss. It was more fun that way to be honest. I've talked to a lot of fans and at least half of them share some of the same feelings I do.

Oh, I was still planning on picking it up when the price goes down (I never buy any games over $30).

Actually GTA IV is sitting at about 25 million, so it looks like it will probably outsell San Andreas eventually.

I don't want to take anything away from the GTA IV sales - 25M is a BIG number, however...

...sales of 15M for GTA III, 30M for Vice City, and 33M for San Andreas says A LOT (and is much more impressive) when you consider how they ran on last gen hardware, had nowhere near the budget, and nowhere the amount of hype or press as IV.

I see the sales numbers for the previous GTAs as a complement to their sheer greatness and fun-factor. It had very little to do with fast hardware, super-realistic animation, or serious storyline. I simply hope Rockstar recaptures GTA's old school feel with their next installment, wherever it is set and whatever the storyline/details.

for me GTA IV took some of the fun aspects of the series out of it. I enjoyed the different eviorments that San Andreas had. I thought that 4 was too realistic and made it less enjoyable. San Andreas had Planes, which is one of the funnest things for me in the whole GTA series. I like flying, Ive always liked Planes and Jets. I especially liked the Hydra, it had missles and made me feel like i was in the air force. San Andreas also had some cool mods to do like whatever you wanted. Well i had the PS2 version so i really couldnt mod it, but whatever, San Andreas is definently better than 4. So Basically 4 took out Diverse Areas, Planes/Jets, Swimming Underwater, and Military Involvement.

the game has no where near peaked, the ballad of gay tony blows any other gta out of the water hands down.
straight into the action, great script, and even more great things added since old mate nico hit the scene.
the fact that rockstar have made these three in the gta 4 series and they all link together so well is a great effort.

and comparing it to call of duty is stupider than the statement itself.
stop whinging about it get off your butts and go design your own games if your so great.
im sure it sucks that if you only own a ps3 you cant play TBoGT or TLaD but if it bothers you that bad go buy an xbox they are not that expensive.

every gta game has its good points and its bad points but at the end of the day, every single one has brought something new to the table every time. personally i thought nico was a dick and was a big flaw, but i didnt let it stop me from enjoying the game.
and the Gay tony Game is the bomb.
Cant wait to see what they come up with next.
