Aliens vs. Predator Review

By Eric Neigher | Xbox 360 Reviews | Feb 16, 2010 12:17 PM | Comment

The aliens and predators are still pretty cool and all, but Rebellion's latest AvP foray, while a decent game from a design perspective, showcases just how threadbare this IP has become. Anyone familiar with the movies will instantly recognize the setup: A human base (run by the eeeeeeeevil Weyland-Yutani Corporation, which is breeding aliens for its dastardly agenda) gets targeted for a "hunt" by the predators. A "youngblood" predator (you) starts waxing fools like Daniel LaRusso waxes old Chevys, and the humans start freaking out. Meanwhile, the eeeeeeeevil Weyland-Yutani's experiments have, of course, gone awry, and the aliens it was breeding have, of course, escaped their constraints. A young alien (you) starts slicing people up like Vince-with-Slapchop slices up boiled eggs, and the humans start freaking out. Meanwhile, there's a human campaign, which is boring. Read More »

Videogames Based on True Events, And Why They Really Aren't

By Justin Massoud | Humor | Feb 16, 2010 9:00 AM | Comment

Videogames are usually inspired by three things: movies, war, and male misconceptions about women. A title that contains all three is the equivalent of the triple threat of singer/actor/dancer -- the Jennifer Lopez of videogames, minus Ben Affleck. Sometimes, however, a game comes along that bucks that tired trend and takes its cues from real-life events or historical figures, not the fantastical and violent fever dreams of nerdy 40-year-old developers. But these standouts still end up diverging enough from their source material in idiotic ways to warrant a smarmy lambasting. Read More »
