As background information, the games scheduled for shutdown in March and April 2010 represent less than 0.3% of all peak online players across all EA titles. Despite some people's perception, there is a lot of behind-the-scenes work involved with keeping these older games up and running. We would rather our hard-working engineering and IT staff focus on keeping a positive experience for the other 99.7% of customers playing our more popular games. These decisions to retire games is never easy. The EA development teams and operational staff pour their hearts into these games almost as much as the customers playing them and it is hard to see one retired. We hope you have gotten many hours of enjoyment out of the games and we appreciate your ongoing patronage.Thank you,

The New Year has seen key positions open across the Guildford studio’s Design, Programming and Art teams. Currently, there are Art positions across Technical, Environment and Animation disciplines, in Programming there are Lead, Senior and Experienced posts open along with Senior Games Designer and Senior Level Designer opportunities.Codemasters Studios Guildford opened in 2007 under the management of Adrian Bolton, previously Development Director for EA Criterion, and Gavin Cheshire, Codemasters’ VP of Development. Formed to expand Codemasters’ internal studios network and create original IP in the action genre, the studio has prototyped several concepts over the past 18 months with one project entering full production some 12 months ago.
The project, an original action FPS for leading console platforms, comes from the studio’s Creative Director Stuart Black, previously co-creator and designer of Black (2006). The title will be Codemasters’ first new IP developed utilizing the EGO Game Technology Platform, Codemasters’ multi-platform, cross-genre development engine, following the successful reboots of established franchises including Colin McRae: DiRT, Race Driver: GRID and Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising.
Executive Producer Tom Gillo (previously Executive Producer and Game Director at Sony Computer Entertainment London Studio) and Senior Producer Andrew Wilson (previously Senior Producer, Split/Second at Blackrock) lead the 80-strong development team and will draw on Codemasters’ Central Technology Unit to further evolve the EGO Game Technology Platform.
“Codemasters’ multi-site studio network has seen a significant rise in headcount to over 450 people and growth at the Guildford Studio is key to our overall development strategy,” said Gavin Cheshire, Vice President, Codemasters development. “With Stuart Black’s new shooter in production, deployment of EGO and key development figures heading up a highly skilled team, our Guildford facility offers great potential for development talent based in the South East who want to join a growing studio and work on original titles for our future portfolio. This current hiring phase is just the beginning as we look to build a further full team and create additional original IP on site.”
For further details on the positions open at Codemasters Studio Guildford and across the Codemasters Studios group, visit www.codemasters.com/careers, @Codemastersjobs on Twitter or email recruitment@codemasters.com.

Futuremark Games Studio today released Moonrise, the first content pack for Shattered Horizon, their PC exclusive multiplayer first-person shooter. Moonrise adds four new levels to Shattered Horizon and is free for all players."Shattered Horizon’s space setting allows us to create stunning environments unlike anything you will find in other FPS games," said Jaakko Haapasalo, producer at Futuremark Games Studio. "The free Moonrise pack doubles the number of levels in the game with each one offering a different zero gravity combat experience. Last week’s major game update was our chance to respond to some of the most popular feature requests from our community. Today’s release of the free Moonrise pack answers reviewers who felt that Shattered Horizon, even at $19.95, was light on content."
In Shattered Horizon, a catastrophic explosion on the Moon has filled near-Earth space with billions of tons of rocky debris. Teams of players fight in zero gravity to control the limited supplies that mean the difference between survival and death in the cold of space. The Moonrise content pack includes four new levels set around the shattered Moon, taking the fight deeper into space and showing a new side to the conflict. The levels, listed in the order they appear in the trailer, are as follows:
Deadeye: The M-75 COMSAT microwave communication dish kept transmitting throughout the massive destruction on the Moon, its systems failing only after backup battery power was depleted. The logs contain classified information of MMC operations that must not fall in ISA's hands.
Ten Star: Built in 2041, the Ten Star Hotel was a symbol of the wealth amassed by the oligarchs of the Moon mining business. A layer of golden radiation shielding covers what used to be the tower's upper structure. The opportunistic crew of an ISA scouting mission decide to collect some souvenirs - only to run into MMC scavengers already looting the ruins.
Searchlight: MINOTAUR, an MMC orbital recovery vehicle survived the Moon catastrophe unscathed. Too valuable to risk in combat, it performs salvage and recovery missions behind the front lines. The ISA sets up operation Theseus to lure the ship into an obstructed space and knock it out.
Slingshot: Mass driver transportation was the key to commercial logistics between the Moon and Earth. As the conflict in space escalates, these massive electromagnetic guns are now a threat looming in the orbit. If the ISA can secure all the intact mass drivers near the Moon, the balance of power will shift dramatically.
Shattered Horizon requires DirectX 10, a DirectX 10 compatible video card, and Windows Vista or Windows 7. There is no support for Windows XP or DirectX 9. Suggested retail price: €19.95 / $19.95 / £14.95

With this new platform, Microsoft offers a fresh approach to phone software, distinguished by smart design and truly integrated experiences that bring to the surface the content people care about from the Web and applications. For the first time ever, Microsoft will bring together Xbox LIVE games and the Zune music and video experience on a mobile phone, exclusively on Windows Phone 7 Series. Partners have already started building phones; customers will be able to purchase the first phones in stores by holiday 2010.“Today, I’m proud to introduce Windows Phone 7 Series, the next generation of Windows Phones,” said Steve Ballmer, chief executive officer at Microsoft. “In a crowded market filled with phones that look the same and do the same things, I challenged the team to deliver a different kind of mobile experience. Windows Phone 7 Series marks a turning point toward phones that truly reflect the speed of people’s lives and their need to connect to other people and all kinds of seamless experiences.”
Designed For Life In Motion
With Windows Phone 7 Series, Microsoft takes a fundamentally different approach to phone software. Smart design begins with a new, holistic design system that informs every aspect of the phone, from its visually appealing layout and motion to its function and hardware integration. On the Start screen, dynamically updated “live tiles” show users real-time content directly, breaking the mold of static icons that serve as an intermediate step on the way to an application. Create a tile of a friend, and the user gains a readable, up-to-date view of a friend’s latest pictures and posts, just by glancing at Start.
Every Windows Phone 7 Series phone will come with a dedicated hardware button for Bing, providing one-click access to search from anywhere on the phone, while a special implementation of Bing search provides intent-specific results, delivering the most relevant Web or local results, depending on the type of query.
Windows Phone 7 Series creates an unrivaled set of integrated experiences on a phone through Windows Phone hubs. Hubs bring together related content from the Web, applications and services into a single view to simplify common tasks. Windows Phone 7 Series includes six hubs built on specific themes reflecting activities that matter most to people:
People. This hub delivers an engaging social experience by bringing together relevant content based on the person, including his or her live feeds from social networks and photos. It also provides a central place from which to post updates to Facebook and Windows Live in one step. Pictures. This hub makes it easy to share pictures and video to a social network in one step. Windows Phone 7 Series also brings together a user’s photos by integrating with the Web and PC, making the phone the ideal place to view a person’s entire picture and video collection. Games. This hub delivers the first and only official Xbox LIVE experience on a phone, including Xbox LIVE games, Spotlight feed and the ability to see a gamer’s avatar, Achievements and gamer profile. With more than 23 million active members around the world, Xbox LIVE unlocks a world of friends, games and entertainment on Xbox 360, and now also on Windows Phone 7 Series. Music + Video. This hub creates an incredible media experience that brings the best of Zune, including content from a user’s PC, online music services and even a built-in FM radio into one simple place that is all about music and video. Users can turn their media experience into a social one with Zune Social on a PC and share their media recommendations with like-minded music lovers. The playback experience is rich and easy to navigate, and immerses the listener in the content. Marketplace. This hub allows the user to easily discover and load the phone with certified applications and games. Office. This hub brings the familiar experience of the world’s leading productivity software to the Windows Phone. With access to Office, OneNote and SharePoint Workspace all in one place, users can easily read, edit and share documents. With the additional power of Outlook Mobile, users stay productive and up to date while on the go. Availability
Partners from around the world have committed to include Windows Phone 7 Series in their portfolio plans. They include mobile operators AT&T;, Deutsche Telekom AG, Orange, SFR, Sprint, Telecom Italia, Telefónica, Telstra, T-Mobile USA, Verizon Wireless and Vodafone, and manufacturers Dell, Garmin-Asus, HTC Corp., HP, LG, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, Toshiba and Qualcomm Inc. The first phones will be available by holiday 2010.

Gas Powered Games announced today that work has started on Kings and Castles, an epic real-time strategy game for the PC and next-generation consoles. This one-of-a-kind experience will let players take on the role of one of three powerful kings who are vying for control of an all-new, original fantasy world.“We’re doing something different this time around,” said Chris Taylor, Creative Director of Gas Powered Games. “We want to take our fans on a great adventure with us. They’ll get to go behind-the-scenes and watch the game come to life from start to finish.”
Using the game’s website and social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter, GPG will give its fans a (mostly) unfiltered look inside the development process of Kings and Castles. “Synergy will be leveraged, and paradigms will be established,” said Taylor. “More importantly, buzzwords will be utilized.”
GPG will be posting regular updates about Kings and Castles on its website. The first video blog went live today. It contains graphic scenes of wood chopping, chickens, and the obligatory horse biting.
Future installments will take fans step-by-step through the design process, discussing the creation of prototypes, the work that goes into creating the visual look and feel, while others will cover the proper care and feeding of chickens.
Kings and Castles will utilize the state-of-the-art RTS technology that Gas Powered Games has pioneered with its previous titles. Key features include the ability to zoom to any level, incredible maps, and eye-popping visuals that will run on a wide range of systems.
“We also promise to gouge evil from its shell at least once, or maybe twice,” said Taylor. “But not three times. That would be weird.”
The first piece of concept art can be seen here.
GameReplays has founded a new game development studio called FluidPlay Studios - it is a UK-based company focusing on 'hardcore' 3D casual games, with a studio in Brazil led by MaDDoX (aka GameReplays' creator of Boss Generals, BT2DC and many other mods). The first game, Torment, will be released in April 2010, on the PC and iPhone. It is a third-person shooter (not an RTS!). FluidPlay's games will be easy to pick up, and will have more strategic depth than 'normal' casual games, and of course the ability to create a community around them.
You can follow Torment's progress on the official FluidPlay Studios website.
"We're organising ourselves towards that strategy - providing you can create something innovative every year that can surprise the end user and please your gamers," said European MD Alain Corre, in an interview published today. "Then you can consider releasing a SKU every 12-18 months - but it needs to be different enough from the previous SKU to make sure you're not tiring the franchise or the consumers."The Call of Duty example is the best around - they've been able over the past five years to iterate every year with growing success each time. They never compromise on quality, which is exactly what we're trying to do with our brands now."
Corre also admitted that working to strict time frames dictated by the movie industry – as it did with the recent release based on James Cameron's Avatar – was partly to blame for its mediocre scores and sales.
"It was true that we were also hoping to create a better experience, I'd say, in terms of gaming - but it's not always easy when you have to follow the rules of a studio," he said. "When you have guidelines and so on, it's more rigid in terms of creation than what you can do with your own property."
Avatar: The Game was announced July 2007, and released December 2009.
THE BATTLE FOR THE FUTURE HAS BEGUN!Set in the early 21st century, Tiberian Sun once again pits the Global Defense Initiative against the Brotherhood of Nod in a struggle for control of the planet. With an epic storyline that unfolds as play progresses, players learn the reasons behind the worldwide outbreak of Tiberium and what happened to the notorious Nod leader Kane, who was presumed dead at the end of the first Command & Conquer.
KANE IS DEAD. A NEW ENEMY HAS EMERGED.
It's time to head up the Firestorm task force. Nod's experiments have unknowingly released a horde of cybernetic nightmares upon the world. As GDI and Nod scramble to save themselves, they realize their only salvation lies in the unthinkable.
The updates improve system hardware detection, fix several issues and also add improved GPU clock speed detection. For 3DMark Vantage and 3DMark06 the update makes both benchmarks fully compatible with the latest multicore processors. In addition, 3DMark Vantage now has significantly faster loading times. The update does not affect core benchmark functionality and the basis for all scores remains unchanged.
