Saving Gears of War, Halo Style  [ Comment BERJAYA ]

360.IGN ponders how Microsoft and Epic could turn Gears of War from a hit gaming franchise to a global entertainment property, following the lead of Bungie's Halo series...
Why is Halo so huge? Despite what your creepy college roommate thinks, it's not because Cortana is "so frikkin' hot." It's because Bungie took a solid game idea, executed it well and empowered its players to take ownership of the finished product. Halo fans are encouraged to think that the franchise belongs to them. The hardest of the hardcore are part of a Bungie-sanctioned Seventh Column of evangelists and crazies who spread the Halo word on fan sites and forum threads around the world.

Bungie developers (God help them) actually listen to their most vocal fans and interact with them constantly on Bungie.net and at gaming conventions. Watching the Bungie folks interact with gamers at the Penny Arcade Expo is a lesson in "community management," whatever that is. At PAX 2009, when they weren't hosting ODST demo sessions and holding public panels, Bungie designers were hiding Halo swag throughout the convention center and Tweeting clues to fans.

Epic Joins OpenGL Standards Group  [ Comment BERJAYA ]

Gamasutra reports that Epic Games has joined the Khronos group, the consortium that controls the open standards for OpenGL and other API's...
"Epic's real-world experience and standing in the industry will enable them to bring enormous insight and influence to the evolution of the OpenGL and OpenGL ES specifications that will benefit the entire industry," said Khronos president and Nvidia mobile content VP Neil Trevett in a statement. "Khronos is delighted to have their participation as we create the APIs that enable key gaming engines, such as Unreal Engine 3, to tap into the power of 3D GPU acceleration on a wide range of platforms."

Gears of War 2 Demo'd in 3D at CES  [ Comment BERJAYA ]
9:06 PST | RaptoR | Print News
G4TV had a chance to play Gears of War 2 in glorious stereoscopic 3D at CES, thanks to a new Samsung technology that automatically upscales 2D pictures to 3D.
It doesn't take long to become numb while walking around CES. The sheer number of electronics vying for your attention quickly turns your brain to mush. But I quickly snapped to attention when roaming the Samsung booth and noticed Gears of War 2 running...in 3D!

Of course, it's not the first game I've seen in 3D, nor was the Gears of War 2 demo specifically engineered to be presented in 3D. Samsung was showing off an internal HDTV technology that can automatically take any picture and create a basic sense of 3D from it. It'd technically work on any Xbox 360 game they popped in, but Gears of War 2 made for a pretty showcase.

"Decade In Review" Reflects on UE3  [ Comment BERJAYA ]
8:50 PST | RaptoR | Print News
Platform Nation's review of the past decade reflects on the rise and rise of Epic's Unreal Engine 3, which powered countless games from 2006 onwards...

While Unreal Engine 1 and 2 were mostly featured in first-person shooters, Unreal Engine 3 demonstrated its versatility. Not too many people will recognize that Epic Games latest incarnation was employed in 2Ks BioShock, Gearbox Softwares Borderlands or Rocksteady Studios Batman: Arkham Asylum (mere coincidence that all these titles start with a B). Epic Games even made their engines more accessible, releasing it in binary only form as The Unreal Development Kit (UDK) this past year. While Unreal Engine 2 has more than 70 titles under its belt, Unreal Engine 3 can easily boast that it not only has more gaming licenses, but is utilized in other capacities including construction design, driving simulation and film storyboards. With Unreal Engine 3s versatility, itll be interesting to see how developing companies will utilize and push the engine for upcoming titles.

12 Days of Gearsmas  [ Comment BERJAYA ]
7:56 PST | RaptoR | Print News
Epic Games has unleashed some pretty crazy modifications to Gears of War 2's multiplayer in time for the holidays. Here's what you can expect from the twelve days of Gearsmas, which began yesterday...
On the first day of Gearsmas, everyone gets a Noobsaw. This means that shots will not interrupt the Lancers Chainsaw. Once it gets revving, only a kill can stop it.

On the second day of Gearsmas, its time for some melee instagib. One attack will tear your enemy to shreds in the usual messy fashion, with no need to hit twice.

On the third day of Gearsmas, youll get three Frag Grenades for every pickup. Worried about saving that last grenade? Just throw ityouve got three of em.

On the fourth day of Gearsmas, Boomshots rule the day. Four shots, more bang for your boom.

On the fifth day, Wingman converts to five one-man teams. Get ready for 1x1x1x1x1 action all day.

On the sixth day, you get six satellites powering the Hammer of Dawn. Think infinite ammo, Gears 1style.

On the seventh day, each mortar gets seven shells instead of the typical three. Bombs away!

On the eighth day, its a blast from the past with eight retro gamersfour vs. four, in classic Gears action. (Note that Horde and Wingman wont be affected by this change.)

On the ninth day, the Boomers invade Horde mode. Youll get squads of Boomers on all waves ending in the number 9.

On the tenth day, youll get 10 waves of Kantus to spice up your Horde experienceif you can survive it, that is

On the eleventh day, eleven meatflags will be taunting (Chaps + 10 players = 11!), so you can go ahead and add double experience to Submission matches.

And the twelfth day? How about all 11 modifications applied all at once? Get ready for total action-packed Gears mayhem!

Unreal Engine 3 Demo'd on iPod Touch 3G  [ Comment BERJAYA ]
6:44 PST | RaptoR | Print News
Anandtech has an interesting article on Epic Games' efforts to port Unreal Engine 3 to the iPhone and iPod Touch, including a nifty video of a UT-style game running on a third-generation iPod Touch.
Mark said they planned to make this available to licensees at some point in the near future. Thats great for end users because it means that any Unreal Engine licensee can now start playing around with making iPhone games based on the same technology. Unfortunately the recently announced, free to the public, Unreal Development Kit (UDK) is Windows only - the iPhone version isnt included. Id guess that at some point Epic will change that, it just makes too much sense. Doing so would enable a whole new class of iPhone game development using an extremely polished engine.

Its all about taking the portable market seriously. While I wouldnt expect to see any Epic branded iPhone games anytime soon, eventually it wouldnt be too far fetched to see a full port of Gears of War to something as small as an iPhone. NAND Flash capacities to support multiple 9GB games will be there in another few years, as will GPU horsepower.

Epic Boss Answers Questions from AIAS  [ Comment BERJAYA ]
16:44 PST | RaptoR | Print News
Epic Games president Dr. Mike Capps has answered a bunch of questions from the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences, which has been posted over on Joystiq...
Are games important?
Sometimes I worry that they're not that we're just helping people waste their time, instead of being productive and adding to society. But Don Daglow gave an inspiring talk recently that reminded me how much people need entertainment, and an escape, in their lives. It serves a real purpose. And who knows? "Having a good time while we're here" might just be the whole point!

Do you think it's important for developers to continue playing games?
Absolutely. The best games always come from developers who are passionate about the game's content. You have to play games, especially the game you're making, to make a great game.

And what are you playing right now, or looking forward to?
I've got a stack of games a mile high waiting for me at home. I try to play all our competitors' games, and all our licensees' games, and as our licensing business grows that's kept me darned busy. For this holiday weekend, I've cued up Assassin's Creed 2, Borderlands, Left 4 Dead 2, and I'll make some headway on CoD:MW2 special ops.

British Newspaper Covers 3D Engines  [ Comment BERJAYA ]
16:29 PST | RaptoR | Print News
UK paper The Guardian has an interesting article on the rise of 3D games engines, including a segment on Epic Games Unreal Engine...
And they are major engineering projects. UK publisher Codemasters has a team of 30 technicians working full-time on maintaining the company's Ego engine, which is used in everything from racing titles to shooters. The Unreal Engine, created by Epic Games, contains a breathtaking 2.5m lines of code as Tim Sweeney, technical director: "That's roughly comparable to the complexity of a whole operating system a decade ago."

Today some of the most brilliant minds in the world physicists, mathematicians, architects, aerodynamics experts - are working on videogames. One of the staff at Scottish developer Realtime Worlds wrote the software powering the New York stock exchange, Joe Graf at Epic Games helped design the bill-paying system used by most online banks, and in the mid-90s, Moscow-based flight-simulator specialist Eagle Dynamics employed the ex-military programmers who created the guidance systems for Russia's nuclear missiles. "Game development is at the cutting edge in many disciplines," says Sweeney. "The physics in modern games includes rigid body dynamics and fluid simulation algorithms that are more advanced than the approaches described in research papers."

Gears Among Best Gaming Franchises of Decade  [ Comment BERJAYA ]
16:10 PST | RaptoR | Print News
CinemaBlend has an article exploring some of the most successful gaming franchises of the past decade. Among the likes of Deus Ex and The Sims is Gears of War...
With a movie in the works, a popular line of action figures and a loyal enough following to ensure that a third game was already planned before the second game went gold, Gears of War is a force to be reckoned with and for good reason. The character-driven combat and heavy-handed shootouts made gamers feel like they were part of a war where every dead locust seemed like it made a difference. The original game was criticized for gameplay repetition but the sequel offered up enough content to cement itself as a serious contender for game of the year back in 2008. This is one of the few action games that just about every other third-person shooter tries to emulate.
