Visibly Aged Fans Muster Mild Enthusiasm for Least Timely Movie Adaptation Ever

By Mike Sharkey | Xbox 360 News | Feb 2, 2010 1:59 PM | Comment

It's been 20 years since moviegoers flocked to see Tom Cruise play hot-shot stock car driver Cole Trickle in "Days of Thunder," but the folks at Paramount Digital Entertainment and Piranha games evidently believe the property still has legs.

Inspired by the film, Days of Thunder is an arcade-style racer that will support online racing for up to 12 players. The game will also offer four single-player modes in which gamers can face off against the movie's hero and his nemesis, Rowdy Burns. Read More »

WoW iPhone App Helps You Worry About Fantasy Auctions 24/7

By Mike Sharkey | PC News | Feb 2, 2010 12:20 PM | Comment

WoW players who manage to pry themselves away from the keyboard will soon be able to stay connected to Azeroth 24/7 with a new "premium-based" service.

Blizzard announced today it is developing a service that will grant players full access to the World of Warcraft Auction House through the Armory website or Armory iPhone app. The announcement, made via a brief post on the WoW General Discussion Forum, is music to the pointy ears of Night Elves everywhere: Players will, potentially, be able to buy and sell in-game items anytime, anywhere, even when they're not logged on. Upload Your Fake Golfing Exploits to Real YouTube

By Mike Sharkey | News | Feb 2, 2010 10:25 AM | Comment

The odds of making a hole-in-one are roughly 12,500 to 1. Sadly, the once-in-a-lifetime achievement is often only witnessed by the other three people in a foursome. Unless, of course, the hole-in-one happens on the virtual courses of Golden Tee.

Incredible Technologies, the coin-operated videogame manufacturer behind the 21-year-old bar room standard, began embedding enhanced social media features into its roughly 10,000 Golden Tee Live machines last year. The technology enables players to post their greatest shots --namely those elusive holes-in-one -- online, preserving them for posterity. Read More »

Videogame System Swansongs

By Luke McKinney | Humor | Feb 2, 2010 9:00 AM | Comment

Death is important. No matter how you live, it's the last bit that defines your name for the rest of time. Undeniable proof: Elvis was one of the most sexually desired men in history, but you're picturing him dead on a toilet. Steve Irwin dedicated his life to crocodiles, but everyone thinks "manta ray." And despite an extraordinarily successful career based entirely on turning left, most people only heard of Dale Earnhardt when he tried turning right.

In this article we'll chronicle the last games of history's consoles -- and we'll rate how true they are to their system's memory with our patented Console Emulation Factor scores. Read More »

UFC: 3.5 Million Arm Bars and Counting

By Mike Sharkey | Xbox 360 News | Feb 2, 2010 8:26 AM | Comment

THQ announced today that UFC 2009 Undisputed has shipped more than 3.5 million units worldwide, qualifying it for Xbox 360 "Platinum Hits" and PS3 "Greatest Hits" status.

According to market research firm NPD Group, the surprise hit was the fifth-best-selling title on the PS3 in 2009, behind only Modern Warfare 2, Killzone 2, Resident Evil 5, and Street Fighter IV. On the 360, Undisputed ranked sixth in sales, behind Modern Warfare 2, Halo: ODST, Madden 10, Assassin's Creed II, and Left 4 Dead 2. Other than Borderlands, Undisputed was the only non-sequel title to crack the top 10 on both consoles. Read More »

The Souls of 600 Namco Bandai Employees Still Burn

By Bryn Williams | Xbox 360 News | Feb 2, 2010 7:04 AM | Comment

It's not great news for developer/publisher Namco Bandai today, as news filters through that a whopping 600+ jobs have just been cut. This equates to roughly 10 percent of the company's overall workforce, and comes in at the same time as a reported $130 million loss for the nine-month period ending December 31, 2009. Read More »

Talkin' About Red Dead Redemption

By Gerald Villoria and Brian Miggels | Xbox 360 Articles | Feb 1, 2010 5:28 PM | Comment

Rockstar's biggest game of 2010 isn't the next big-city violence simulator. Instead, it's an Old West violence simulator -- there's a big difference. The atmosphere of the Old West, from the saloons and whiskey to the horseback drive-bys, is as rich a setting as anything in the sci-fi, modern-day, or fantasy milieus. Other Western games have come before, but Red Dead Redemption might just be the first game that does justice to the Old West.

Several GameSpy editors are psyched about Red Dead Redemption, including resident humorist and alcohol enthusiast Brian Miggels. What follows is a heavily edited transcript of an electronic conversation he had with GameSpy Editor Gerald Villoria, who recently had the chance to play the game for himself. Read More »

Inside Star Trek Online's Endgame

By Gerald Villoria | PC Previews | Feb 1, 2010 4:39 PM | Comment

As a commanding officer within the Federation of Planets, your ultimate goal is to achieve the rank of admiral. I've always felt that with MMOs, the endgame is where the game truly begins -- fitting for games that never truly end. Raiding, large-scale PvP encounters, and the very best loot: These are all usually reserved for players who have made it to the final levels. As you'd expect, Star Trek Online rewards players who achieve the rank of admiral with access to the best ships, the best equipment, and the game's most challenging content. That's all obvious, so what exactly is unique about STO's endgame? Read More »

Miss America: Drop the Controllers and Play in the Street

By Mike Sharkey | News | Feb 1, 2010 1:31 PM | Comment

Caressa Cameron, crowned Miss America 2010 on Saturday night, promptly got on the wrong side of the estimated 174 million gamers in her home country. During the interview portion of the 89th annual beauty contest, Cameron was asked what should be done about America's childhood obesity epidemic.

"Take away the TV, take away the videogames, set some standards for our children," the 22-year-old Virginia native declared. Parents should encourage their kids to play outside, she continued, "playing imaginary games with sticks in the street like I did when I was little." Read More »

Is C&C4 Still an RTS if You Don't Harvest Unobtainium?

By Anthony Gallegos | PC Videos | Feb 1, 2010 10:42 AM

Like Dawn of War II, Command and Conquer 4 is abandoning a lot of the traditional RTS tropes, opting for a more get-you-right-into-the-action sort of game. Players now choose what type of "hero" commander they want to be, and then capture spots on the map in order to win (rather than destroying their opponent and hoarding resources). And before you go getting your RTS-purist fingers ready to spam their message board in protest, you should really check out the newest trailer, as the game's still looking pretty awesome, base building or no. We Hate Derek Jeter But This MLB 2K10 Trailer is Okay

By Will Tuttle | Xbox 360 Videos | Feb 1, 2010 10:24 AM

We're a little less than three weeks away from the date when pitchers and catchers may report to spring training, something many baseball fans view as the official start of the Major League Baseball season. 2K Sports is celebrating the impending start of the 2010 season by releasing a new "sizzle" trailer for MLB 2K10. This Red Sox fan is hoping that Derek Jeter's appearance in the trailer will result in his immediate spontaneous combustion, as is typical for someone who falls under the so-called "MLB 2K Curse." Am I just making that up? I bet his family hopes so! See More »

Crazy Old Man In Cave "Giving Swords Away Like Candy"

Recent police reports have revealed that a deranged senior citizen chamber dweller has been handing weapons out to pretty much everyone who enters his stone abode. Related rumors that he is having an affair with "crazy old medicine woman in other cave" are unproven and, frankly, disgusting.
