“Black,” an exhibition of local artists, closes Sunday with a reception from 5 to 7 p.m. at the District of Columbia Arts Center, 2438 18th Street NW: “The show’s artists have captured the emotional impact of the joy, passion and spiritual response audiences experience to the blues, gospel, jazz and hip-hop. The energy, elegance, and spiritual nature of the black preacher, politician, academic, actor, and activist is communicated in each individuals interpretation of the color and the concept of ‘Black.’ “

Painter Cornelia Schulz has an exhibit at Project 4 Gallery, 1353 U Street NW: “Schulz sophisticatedly manipulates the oil paint, alkyd resin and acrylics that spread throughout and emerge from her assembled shaped canvases. Having been educated in painting around the same time as iconic 1960’s painters such as Richard Tuttle and Elizabeth Murray, similarities in sensibilities and experimentation with shaped canvases are certainly evident in Schulz’s work. In this exhibition, Schulz presents some of her most recent paintings where abstract, biomorphic and at times floral forms coat segments of her constructed compositions while applying her contemporary, idiosyncratic handwriting to a historically rich concept.”

“Hard Copy: Book as Sculpture” is at the National Museum of Women in the Arts: “Presents 15 examples of artists’ books that blur the lines between book and sculpture. The themes of these innovative and intimate works are as varied as the artists’ personal experiences and feelings. Hard Copy expands the concept of the book, taking it into new territory where it becomes that unattainable ‘object of desire’ to be admired from a distance. The exhibition plays a game with the viewers. The works are tactile but they cannot be touched. The pages of books cannot be turned. Hard Copy challenges viewers’ expectations and questions the distinction between book and sculpture.”

At The Textile Museum, 2320 S Street NW… from the Harajuku District in Tokio to the District is Harajuku Japanese Street, Chic Demonstration and Fashion Show: “The Harajuku district in Tokyo is the heart of the city’s fashionable youth subculture. Every Sunday, ‘Harajuku Girls’ gather there to socialize while dressed in a variety of street styles inspired by the Victorian era (Gothic Lolita), animated characters (Cosplay), or other contemporary influences. In this program, local experts will illuminate this uniquely Japanese fashion phenomenon, followed by a tutorial, fashion show and refreshments.”

Owner of go mama go! Says Store Will Close

go mama go! Borderstan Luis Gomez Photos

1809 14th Street NW: go mama go! will close its doors in the next few months. (Luis Gomez Photos)

The 14th Street retailer go mama go! is closing its doors sometime in the next few months, according to owner Jonathan Chudnoff. He distributed a press release minutes ago by email.

“The store will remain open until the building’s owners find a new tenant. Normal operations will continue through January, followed by clearance sales of merchandise, furniture and fixtures in February and March. Rotating art exhibitions will continue until the store closes. The actual closing date will be determined once a new tenant is ready to step in.”

Chudnoff’s late wife, Noi, started the store and he kept the store open after her death. In the press release, Chudnoff cited “the twin blows of the general economic decline and the death of the store’s founder, Noi Chudnoff, whose dynamic spirit, creativity and personality were key ingredients in the store’s early success.”

Noi Chudnoff died unexpectedly on November 6, 2007. We still miss her and we will miss seeing Jonathan and popping into go mama go! Both Noi and Jonathan contributed much to 14th Street and the entire neighborhood as well as to a number of charitable and human rights causes. Good luck to Jonathan, and the store’s employees.

14th Street: Chocolate and Wine at ACKC; HomeMade Pizza Opening Jan. 21

Home Made Pizza, at 1522 14th Street NW. Sign is up. (Photo: Luis Gomez Photos)

ACKC is now a chocolatier and wine bar, having just received its liquor license from the city. The store, at 1529 14th Street is advertising “nightly wine and chocolate pairings.”

The HomeMade Pizza store at 1522 14th Street is planning a grand opening on Thursday, January 21, from 3 to 9 p.m. Apparently, there will be some goodies for the locals. HomeMade Pizza’s niche is selling ready-to-bake pizzas for home; this will be their fifth DC-area store.

And just so there is no confusion about the 1522 14th Street address, yes, Cork and Fork is still going in at the same location; it is divided into two storefronts with separate entrances. Cork and Fork already has two Virginia locations and bill themselves as a wine and fine food store. Do not confuse it with Cork Market up the street at 1805 14th.
