Massachusetts voters will go to the polls January 19th in a special election for the deceased Ted Kennedy's Senate seat. While there's no panic button being set off just yet--Massachusetts voters have not sent a Republican to the Senate in 37 years--a new Rasmussen poll indicates that Attorney General Martha Coakley's once comfortable lead over her Republican opponent Scott Brown is narrowing. In a political year wrought with voter dissatisfaction with Congress and dwindling approval of President Obama and his agenda, Democrats should take nothing for granted. The left must hold onto this seat if it expects to pass Obama's health-care reform bill and other measures on the Democrats' agenda.

The special election is just 8 days away, and Republicans are pulling out all the stops to win or at least come close. A Coakley loss would be nothing short of devastating. A narrow-margin victory for her in this solidly blue state could be a chilling foreshadowing of things to come in November's midterms and thus empower conservatives even further. The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC) reports that the "American Future Fund, the guys who brought you the Swift Boat attacks against decorated war veteran John Kerry, are up with a $400,000 buy, smearing Coakley." Coakley's being portrayed as weak on terrorism, soft on immigration, pro-gay and pushing big tax increases. Democrats must win this state, and win big.

Please support Coakley's bid to continue the Kennedy legacy. Funds are needed immediately to combat the harsh attacks from the right. Click here to donate directly to the Coakley campaign or here to contribute to the DSCC. And please urge everyone you know in Massachusetts to vote Coakley on January 19th.

The Martha Coakley ads attacking Scott Brown are now on every ten minutes. The Dems don't seem to understand that will hurt, not help them. Brown's campaign doesn't run ads attacking Coakley. People are sick of that crap.

What about Brown's "I don't believe the Constitution gives rights to terrorists" ad? That sure sounds like an attack ad to me.

" Coakley's being portrayed as weak on terrorism, soft on immigration, pro-gay and pushing big tax increases."

She is being portrayed accurately. Which of these is not the case.

Reply    Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 12:18 PM on 01/12/2010

Haha. That's exactly what I thought when I read that. How DARE they portray her how she is.

Aren't we all "pro-gay?" They're our brother and sisters, sons and daughters after all.

Reply    Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 11:05 AM on 01/14/2010

No, she is not being portrayed accurately. Everything you mentioned are mere slogans. People can have honest disagreements on the best way to combat terrorism, deal with immigration, and taxation. Let's be fair. The ads on both sides obscure the issues.

I saw the debate last night. The problem with Brown is that his positions are all over the place. Not long ago, he was in publicly in favor of cap and trade and universal health care and now he is campaigning against these positions. Last night when pushed he said he is pro-chose, but I if elected, chances are he would fall in lock-step with Republicans. It might be worth voting for him if he was a leader who would revitalize the Republican Party, infusing it with some new ideas, but Brown doesn't have any real convictions much less ideas.

Don't ever trust a Republican who says he is pro-choice. Once they get into Congress, it is lock step with their leaders for them. ...they vote the subjugation of women ticket all the way.

Republicans can't win on their record or successful policies that help the majority of voters because thiey have no record and there aren't any. So they resort to vicious despicable lies and personal attacks. The low information voter listens to the lies instead of taking the time to PAY ATTENTION to the actual facts, resulting in the situation we now find ourselves in. The republicans are given years and years and years to destroy our nation and the dems are given a year to fix it all and enact policies that will actually benefit the majority of voters. Meanwhile the wealthy get richer and the middle class gets poorer. Stupid, stupid, stupid.

Is it true that Al Gore failed to win his home state of Tennessee in the 2004 election and that cost him four electoral votes? If that's true that's amazing!

I just don't understand why anyone in control of this party thinks the rest of us should care? You don't ever care to deliver on things promised to us so why should we care if you lose a little power? Maybe with one less vote, this whole 60 vote nonsense will finally be put to an end because you'll have a reason to end it.

Reply    Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 10:57 AM on 01/12/2010
- babina I'm a Fan of babina 8 fans permalink

They can't deliver because they aren't provided enough time to deliver the promised policies. We let the republicans almost completely destroy the economy and the nation with policies that do not work for the better part of twenty to thirty years then we give the dems like one year to fix in all and, oh yeah, do everything we actually need them to do. We are just stupid.

Reply    Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 11:53 AM on 01/12/2010

NO. You're giving me more Battered Democrat Syndrome nonsense. The Democrats have no excuse for not going after the banks or insurers. The people would have been four square behind them. They chose to give up without a fight. That's cowardice. No amount of citizen pressure can make a man have grit, determination, and resilience. They've chosen to cater to special corporate interests rather than find ways of pleasing their supporters. They keep looking for excuses to not do anything, while the Pugs look for every conceivable way of getting their agenda met. Say what you will about the Pugs, at the very least they don't take no for answer and fight tooth and nail and constantly until they get what they want. The Democrats are pathetic. A shadow of a once great party.

Massachusetts politics has been a train wreck for years, only held together by the former "Kennedy Mystique".
Coakley represents all that is wrong with the Commonwealth, and she will fail on her own accord with out help from opponents. It is high time for a change in the Commonwealth!

Is it true that the senate dems have stated that they will delay the seating of the new senator if the if the repub candidate wins to illegally preserve their 60 vote majority needed to jam their health care fodder down everyones throat? Just wondering since a dem MA house rep was complaining about this reported tactic and was livid about it. Hows that transparency on the health care bill working for you all? I must have missed it on Cspan. Just asking.

I do not think they are saying things that are untrue. From what I have read, she is soft on immigration, pro-gay and pushing big tax increases. Just because the other side is saying it, does not make it untrue. I hope Brown wins and brings some balance back to the Senate. No more cramming things down our throats wheather we want it or not.

Reply    Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 10:05 PM on 01/11/2010

Oh I didn't realize the 60 democratic senators weren't elected to their seats by people voting for them.

just cause you don't want something doesn't mean other people don't

Problem is, you people keep saying things like that and every single time polls show that an overwhelming number of people actually want them. It's just the Beck/Hannity/Limbaugh parrots (you all say exactly the same thing - exactly - it's uncanny) that don't seem to realize that. Oh - and those big tax increases. When did those come along? I got a tax cut myself, along with millions of other Americans. Homophobia is the most ridiculous phobia of them all and makes the people suffering from it look like idiots just with their complete inability to defend their hatred. Come on! We let you guys have the entire sandbox for a long time. And all you did was mess up EVERYTHING!!!

Reply    Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 11:45 AM on 01/12/2010

I guess you can't find anything......When Dems lose it is because it is all untrue. Give me a break!!...THe fact that this is any close should tell you that the Dems are out of touch with America. Since Dems are emotional, please consider this nothing more that an embarassment to the USA.

I think you misunderstood what I was saying.
I was asking, is anything being said about her untrue?

The article seems to imply that is the case because the author says she is being "smeared".

So I was asking what was being said that was untrue. So far, no one has answered that.

Reply    Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 02:30 AM on 01/12/2010

The Health Care Bill as it is has only 41% support IN MA! You bet they are out of touch. They have no idea of the wave that is going to hit them in Nov...they have almost no Independent support. Brown in polling 3-1 with independents...Just like VA, just like NJ...independents has run away from the Democrats. Progressives have overreached! MA may be too blue to win in the end, but if she wins by less than 8 or 9% it's tealeaves for nov.

Wow. Look at that list of big Coakley donors. It's all the big pharma companies and a lot of the insurance companies.

She was at a fundraiser a couple of nights ago. The hosts for it were a bunch of big healthcare lobbyists, including DC insider Jamie Gorelick, who helped bring on the 9-11 attacks and the fall of Freddie Mac, while raking in huge wealth.

Luckily I think Brown is busy shooting himself in the foot. The ads he has been running are pushing the "Obama cares more about terrorists rights than america's safety" meme.
This might play well in some parts of the country, but I do not think it will serve him well in Mass. People in MA are willing to vote for moderate republicans (or people pretending to be moderate, like Romney), but Brown is too far right.

He is pro-gun, pro-death penalty, anti-abortion and anti-gay marriage. Is that really who will represent MA??
