Never in my life would I have thought an axe purchase would be something I’d consider for even a second. But Best Made Co.’s custom-made, hand-painted axes are truly objects of art.

Most recently they’ve released a poster to commemorate their 2009 designs. The image below is actually the back of the poster, but I can’t get enough of the collection of shapes, patterns and colors that represent each design. This is definitely the side that I will be displaying.

Pick up yours right here, or become a member of the tribe and receive a folded version of the poster for free.
I’m fascinated by the beautiful work of artist Tyson Anthony Roberts, who paints “moving landscapes that portray unsettling perspectives”. The artist currently has a print up for sale at 20x200 (the top image below). Prints of all the standard sizes are still available, but I imagine they won’t be for long, so move quickly!

Concoction is the first solo exhibition of artwork by fellow designer and friend of dwl, Chad Kouri. The show consists mostly of collage works using found materials and ephemera, including the image below, which definitely makes me want to see more.
The opening reception is this Friday, January 8th, so if you’re in the Chicago area I would highly recommend stopping by. You can check out the Rotofugi Gallery site for more details. And if you can’t make it to the show, be sure to stop by The Post Family and take a look at the new typographic prints Chad has up for sale (here and here)!

One of my favorite places to buy type, Village, has a brand new home. With the launch they’ve also introduced a new foundry, Type Supply. In particular I’m really liking the flashy, vintage-Times Square feel of Ohm.

In case you need some help comng up with your New Year’s resolutions, this site (via swissmiss) may come in handy.

I, however, being a person with a never-ending running To Do list, had no trouble coming up with 2010 goals. My challenge was more about narrowing them down to something manageable, so here’s what I came up with for some of my professional goals for the year.
Launch the new dwl. Finally, I know. I hope to make this happen in the first half of the year.
Expand. I’d like to start up a couple of new columns I’ve had on the backburner for a while, collaborate with some more guest authors, and continue coming up with new and creative content.
Launch the Seamless invitation portfolio. I’ve been doing a lot of work for weddings and events lately and I really want this side of the business to have it’s own home. This is also a goal for the first half of the year.
Become a better photographer. Several months ago I bought my first DSLR. As of now I have no intention of ever pursuing photography professionally. But I fell in love with the art as soon as I picked the camera up, so it’s become an addictive new hobby. Up until now I’ve sort of been just figuring it out as I go, so I’ve decided to do a 365 project—one photo per day—for the next 12 months. I’m not sure where exactly the project will go, but I’m hoping that photographing more intentionally will be a huge learning experience, and that by the end of the year I will have made some solid progress.
What are some of your goals for this year?

Happy New Year everyone! It’s good to be back after a long and relaxing break.
I realize 2009 was a challenging year in a lot of ways. But I can’t help but look back and focus on all of the positive things that happened for us both personally and professionally. We’re about 18 months into the life of this blog, and when we first started I had no idea where it would go. It has far exceeded my expectations.
In 2009 we’ve watched our readership steadily grow, we launched our website, collaborated with other talented designers and bloggers, worked with many amazing clients, and gotten a chance to get to know some of you, dear readers. And we would not have had such a successful 2009 without your support, encouragement and enthusiasm. So a huge thank-you goes out to you.
I see lots of great things to come in 2010. We have a few projects in the works and a few other ideas that are just beginning to form. And since you are so integral to the continued success of dwl, we would love to hear about what you’d like to see more of in 2010. Feel free to send an email our way or leave a comment below with your thoughts.
And as a little happy new year gift, I’ve created a series of desktop wallpapers based on the gift tag designs I posted before the holidays. Enjoy!
