Fun With Chainsaws: Try This at Home, Kids!

Xbox 360 News | Apr 28, 2009 04:42 PDT | Comment

Although we've known about Capcom's Dead Rising 2 for months now, the company has been holding out on us when it came to showing actual footage. That all changed today with the release of the first gameplay trailer for the sequel, which is sure to be one of the year's most hilariously violent games. The "use anything as a weapon" style of combat from the first game has returned, as is well-demonstrated in this video. You owe it to yourself to check this out if you're a fan of chainsaws, baseball bats, chainsaws, roulette wheels, chainsaws and, um, moose heads? Read More »

Welcome to the Darkside (of Raccoon City)

Wii News | Apr 28, 2009 04:41 PDT | Comment

Capcom is steadily bringing Wii gamers up to speed with Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles, the follow-up to 2007's The Umbrella Chronicles. At this rate, Wii owners should get their African zombie adventure sometime in 2013. This sequel will use the same first-person shooter perspective from Umbrella Chronicles, with two players taking on the roles of Claire Redfield and Leon S. Kennedy.

As we can see in the new trailer, this on-rails shooter offers liberal doses of shock value and plenty of gory Resident Evil imagery thrown in for good measure. Read More »

Microsoft Goes All Out at E3

Xbox 360 News | Apr 28, 2009 04:01 PDT | Comment

This is the year that E3 goes back to being the spectacle it once was. I expect to be on my feet for hours and hours, pushing my way through the teeming unwashed throngs as they desperately try to catch an eyeful of the completely disinterested booth babes. The horrible convention food is also high on my "Most Anticipated Things About E3" list, right up there with sleep deprivation and getting mugged.

On the brighter side, I am looking forward to the press conferences, as you get most of the best news before even hitting the show floor. In years past, the big three always competed to outdo one another, and you always walked away from these media briefings with plenty of water cooler conversation fodder. Recently this hasn't included our friends at Nintendo, who may be too busy to prepare a big E3 announcement, what with all the money they're counting. Read More »

Frilly Cravats Look Awesome in Court

Nintendo DS News | Apr 28, 2009 01:07 PDT | Comment

Chris Rock once joked that Michael Jackson showed up to court dressed like Cap'n Crunch. He obviously never played any of the Ace Attorney series, where the King of Pop's outfits would fit right in alongside circus clowns, psychics, and dominatrix-like prosecutors. One of the most famous characters in that universe, the cravat-donning Miles Edgeworth, is finally getting his own game. Hardcore Ace Attorney fans probably knew that Capcom was planning a new installment for DS, but there's a bigger surprise at hand: Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth is coming much sooner than you think. As in, you won't have to wait a year after for an English-language version; it's coming in Q4 of this year. Read More »

In what is perhaps the coolest thing to hit adventure gaming since Sam & Max, Martin Kool of Q42 (an Internet company that crafts web applications) has released Sarien.net, a project that could only have spawned from a fan of Sierra adventure games. Sarien.net, named after the sinister antagonists from the original Space Quest, is a website where users can instantly play multiplayer-enabled web versions of classic Sierra On-Line adventure games. Currently, the site offers... Read More »

Lost in Space (on a Planet)

Xbox 360 News | Apr 28, 2009 09:50 PDT | Comment

Shave off those Kurt-Russell-in-The-Thing beards cuz Capcom's Lost Planet 2 has done away with those frozen tundra once and for all. Instead, as you can see in our new collection of screenshots and movies, its replaced large yellow holes in the snow with red-hot lava, team-based co-op multiplayer and monsters so huge that even King Kong would have an inferiority complex.

As part of the recent Captivate event held in France, GameSpy was on-hand to check out the Lost Planet 2 crazy train. From the media alone, you'd have to blind, or stupid not to get chills of excitement from these visuals. Read More »

Is Japan's Game Industry Xenophobic?

News | Apr 28, 2009 09:25 PDT | Comment

In a frank discussion with FT.com, Square Enix's game group president Yoichi Wada accused the Japanese gaming industry of having become a "closed environment" and "almost xenophobic." This is of course hot on the heels of the company's recent acquisition of western publisher and developer Eidos. Wada claims that the once-great Japanese gaming industry is now lagging behind that of the U.S.

"'The lag with the US is very clear. The US games industry was not good in the past but it has now attracted people from the computer [industry] and from Hollywood, which has led to strong growth.'" Read More »

What must it be like to live the life (or is that un-life) of one of Capcom's infected zombies from the Dead Rising series? One moment you're harmlessly wandering around a shopping mall or casino, looking for tasty brain stems to chew on, and the next, some asshole's smacking your face off with a roulette wheel. We expect your looking forward to check out the media, but also stay with us for some juicy coverage of the game; Will was lucky enough to get some special time with it recently. Read More »

PC Users: Prepare to Get Smarter

PC News | Apr 28, 2009 08:33 PDT | Comment

Just when you thought your brain age had hit a plateau thanks to the glut of "brain training" games on the Nintendo DS, today Namco Bandai Europe announced Brain Exercise with Dr. Kawashima for the PC. Part of the new "Games for Laptop" mini-DVD, which has hit the UK and Europe in PAL format, Brain Exercise with Dr. Kawashima features the same recognizable (and slightly annoying) digital doc, who can supposedly sharpen your wits. "Brain Exercise with Dr. Kawashima consists of 36 quick mini exercises divided into three colour-coded categories to train the three main lobes of the brain – frontal, parietal and temporal – through simple arithmetic, memory games and puzzles." Mr. T Game in the Works; What?

Xbox 360 News | Apr 28, 2009 03:03 PDT | Comment

One of the most unlikely "heroes" imaginable is set to get his own series of videogames, as we've received word that none other than Mr. T of "The A-Team" fame is to receive digital immortality thanks to publisher and developer ZootFly. A brief statement on the company's website says it all: "ZootFly to Develop a Mr. T Game."

In fact, it's going to be a series of games based on the Mohawk Media Mr. T graphic novel license. The information made available to us frankly beggars belief (in a truly awesome, train-wreck fashion). So err, it looks like Mr. T will be fighting Nazis... Read More »

A Ride Worth Being Taken For: MvC2 on XBLA, PSN

Fighting game fans, let the freak-out commence.

After many rumors and much speculation, Capcom has confirmed that arcade fighting classic Marvel vs. Capcom 2 will grace Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network this summer for 1200 Microsoft Points ($15). As an added bonus, Capcom confirmed via e-mail that PS3 owners will be able to download a demo from the PlayStation Store starting this Thursday. Capcom sent the demo to various outlets, and based on my brief time with it, it appears that this 200MB version's roster boasts Wolverine, Spider-Man, Ryu, Chun-Li, Strider Hiryu, and Iron Man. The Five Most Disturbing MMOs

Humor | Apr 27, 2009 05:25 PDT | Comment

There's an obvious appeal to getting lost in a virtual world, whether that world is a fantasy realm of knights and magic, an epic space opera, or a dystopian future where cybernetics blur the line between man and machine. But an imaginary world is only as good as its designer and, unfortunately, there's no laws out there dictating who can and can't start their own virtual existence. If there were, I'm pretty sure these would all be criminalized... Read More »

The Limey #7: Head in the Clouds

The Limey | Apr 27, 2009 05:14 PDT | Comment

Cloud computing. It's a term that's being bandied around a hell of a lot in the gaming space right now. GDC in March saw two cloud-based gaming services announced, OnLive and Gaikai, but what does it all mean? I'm not the most technical guy in the world, but my layperson's understanding of the technology has me believing that I'll be able to play the latest, most technically advanced games on my underpowered computer or TV without the need for expensive hardware purchases.
