February 28, 2009 - At the tail end of WonderCon's Star Trek panel with J.J. Abrams and cast members from the movie (including Zachary Quinto and Chris Pine), the director was asked about a possible Cloverfield sequel.

Cloverfield, the 2008 hit from the creator of Lost and Alias, was a uniquely-filmed piece with a low budget of $25 million, and ended up raking in many times that when all was said and done. According to Abrams, a sequel of some sort could be in its early stages, much to fans' delight. "We're actually working on an idea right now," he answered, verifying information given in an interview with J.J. Abrams IGN Movies conducted back in May of 2008.

Abrams was far from vague about the drive needed to make such a movie. Making a sequel for a movie like Cloverfield "better not be a business decision," Abrams stated, continuing, "if you're gonna do something, it should be because you're really inspired to do it." He went on, "it doesn't mean that it'll work, but it means you did it because you cared." However, Abrams didn't guarantee that if his new project came to fruition, it would be a sequel in the classic sense. He did guarantee, however, that "it will be something connected to Cloverfield."
