Hack cab drivers offer rides in their own unmarked cars for a fee but are not licensed and have no ties to a taxi company.
Thursday's incident began on 56th Street near Market when the victim arranged with the hack cabbie to drive her to work on North Broad Street, said Capt. John Darby of the Special Victims Unit.
The driver diverted from the route to the woman's destination and instead drove to an alley near Belmont and Wyalusing avenues, where he pulled a knife and attempted to rape her, Darby said.
"At some point she does attempt to fight him off and he flees in his vehicle," Darby said of the suspect.
The woman was not injured but was taken to a hospital for a sexual-assault exam and released.
The suspect is described as a dark-skinned black man, in his early 30s, 6 feet to 6 feet 3, 220 pounds with a mustache and goatee, a horseshoe-shaped scar under his right eye and a Jamaican accent, police said.
The victim told police the suspect was driving an older model green Jeep Cherokee with a tan interior.
Anyone with any information about the incident should call 215-685-3251. *
