Here’s a chance for a little interactivity for all the bloggers out there. Below is a list of 100 things that I think every good omnivore should have tried at least once in their life. The list includes fine food, strange food, everyday food and even some pretty bad food - but a good omnivore should really try it all. Don’t worry if you haven’t, mind you; neither have I, though I’ll be sure to work on it. Don’t worry if you don’t recognise everything in the hundred, either; Wikipedia has the answers.

Here’s what I want you to do:

1) Copy this list into your blog or journal, including these instructions.
2) Bold all the items you’ve eaten.
3) Cross out any items that you would never consider eating.
4) Optional extra: Post a comment here at www.verygoodtaste.co.uk linking to your results.

My results are here: http://reynardine.livejournal.com/314640.html

I was surprised at the number of things I had actually tried, although most of that was due to my father forcing me to taste foods I normally wouldn’t touch with a 10-foot pole.

I’ve done mine. A shocking 42 out of 100, but a surprising amount of stuff I wouldn’t even consider eating.

Here’s my list, Andrew. Thanks, quite literally food for thought.

Here’s a semi-related post on forgotten foods of my childhood that might be of interest…

I love this. Thank you.

Here is my list:

http://blog.electricvelocipede.com/2008/08/damn-you-andy-wheelermeme-time.html

I think I’ve done pretty well. :) I kept waiting for brains, but it wasn’t on the list!

I got a somewhat respectable 51 out of 100. A fair number are due to my husband’s love of offal and molluscs.

[…] blogger Andrew over at Very Good Taste came up with a fun little meme which I couldn’t resist. Want to play along? It’s […]

given that I was a vegetarian for 10 years, I think I came out with a pretty good score at 58. Here’s mine:
http://fidgetybudgie.typepad.com/fidgetybudgie/2008/08/the-omnivores-100.html

http://burger-eater.livejournal.com/354656.html

That’s mine.

Fascinating list - my comments are here:
http://evil-macaroni.livejournal.com/94327.html

http://cthonus.livejournal.com/46960.html

Hmm - I seem to have missed the usual things like borsch and nettle tea and carp.

Strangest thing I’ve eaten recently? Steak in Prague with a savoury sauce, topped with whipped cream and cranberry jam. I guess my phrase book only ran to ‘this says beef somewhere in the description’ :p

Hmm most of those I wouldn’t eat/drink are mostly due to allergies.

http://theiadora.livejournal.com/36728.html

http://syntart.livejournal.com/62577.html

Very fun! I really enjoyed that.

Here’s mine..

I’ve done a few interesting things, and I’m intrieged at some of the stuff here [clam chowder? oh my…], so I have to look for some places that serve those things in the region.

my list is here:http://mouse-rants.livejournal.com/44449.html

i’m interested in the differences (apparently) between a british and an american diet. some of the things that seem quite usual to you are just not findable here, some of the others (like huevos rancheros and gazpacho and bagels and lox) just seem like a regular part of my life.

but i don’t do peanut butter.

[…] been documenting recently, I couldn’t pass up this meme. Stolen from Lisa, who got it from Very Good Taste: 100 things to eat before you […]

56 out of 100…

John: Between the head cheese and the chitterlings and the sweetbreads, I thought brains might be an offal too far!

Cthonus: That steak sounds… awful. Truly awful! It sounds like there was a solid idea in there somewhere, though; some sort of stroganoff, perhaps? From the responses I’ve seen, carp isn’t actually as common as you might think.

Mouse: There are deliberately some things you might consider commonplace on the list - I wanted to strike a good international balance, so yours is probably the right response! I consulted with people from all over when compiling the list.

Here’s my list, with some extended commentary.

Only missed 20 or so.

Clearly, I live in Toronto. *g*

http://fairmer.livejournal.com/442786.html

That was fun. I was surprised how many things were part of my regular diet, how many were added after trips abroad, and how many were functions of where I live.

Not bad considering I went vegetarian in my twenties… http://deathpixie.livejournal.com/615340.html

I have a mere 26. While there are some of these that I wouldn’t seek out, I was surprised at how few of them I drew the line at, given that I’m generally a fairly picky eater.

(Meme-spreading tip: use the permanent link of the entry rather than just your blog’s domain, because these things can rattle around for years, and it’s fascinating to see what they turn into.)

http://not-justagirl.livejournal.com/60888.html

here’s my list!

http://not-justagirl.livejournal.com/60888.html

here’s my results… kinda an odd mix…

http://robing.livejournal.com/39500.html

Only 36, but I guess that is not too surprising, considering.

Neat idea. Mine are at http://domesticat.net/2008/08/omnivores — thanks to the list, I know of a few new-to-me foods I should try.

[…] A meme! […]

Here’s my results. Thanks for the interesting meme! There were only a few things I had to look up, but it was interesting all the same.

http://kateshort.livejournal.com/390259.html

I am a very picky eater, so my list is quite boring. But what a beautiful list! Even my mom did it in her own way, though she didn’t post it in her journal.

A lovely meme. Thank you for it!

Here’s my list:

http://serenecooking.livejournal.com/

Haven’t done a meme in ages, but read it on Electric Velocipide blog (http://blog.electricvelocipede.com/2008/08/damn-you-andy-wheelermeme-time.html) and decided to do it. Thanks, I had to research a number of them and it was educational. Now I’m hungry…

My post is at http://dawnonowyouseeit.blogspot.com/2008/08/my-goodness-meme.html

I got 81, which is actually pretty low for someone who has worked in professional kitchens for a long time. What can I say, I’m squeamish about certain things. My list:

http://queenofattolia.livejournal.com/149391.html#cutid1

Before this, I thought myself quite the foodie…but perhaps not so much!

Here’s mine.

Here are my results, with a few comments in Norwegian:

http://forum.kvinneguiden.no/index.php?showtopic=352026&view=findpost&p=5886267

I have only 28, but a lot of these things are either quite expensive or are unavailable where I am, so I’m pleased with my 28.

http://elance.livejournal.com/553844.html

Loved this idea! I realize there are quite a few things I need to try. Roadkill not being one of them!
Here’s my list:
http://www.liketocook.com/50226711/the_omnivores_hundred.php

72, I think (but can I get bonus points for brains?)

http://desperance.livejournal.com/ for the detailed score.

I love this meme. What a great idea. But why no percebes?
I have tried only 63 out of the hundred! Something to strive for.

http://whatstepheats.blogspot.com/2008/08/omnivore-one-hundred.html

70 out of 100. Must try harder.

Mine here. 64 out of 100.

Thanks for the great meme! I got 82/100 (if I can count this morning)
http://stephaniedoes.com/2008/what-ive-eaten/

69 out of 100. Need to track down some of the other stuff!

74%, by my count. Not too shabby.

I was surprised at how much I’ve tried, too. But then, I have the advantage of living in New York, where most of it is readily available. Still more surprising how much I haven’t tried yet. Gotta get on that!

Thanks for the reminder of all the great food out there. Here are my results:

http://leekottner.typepad.com/dowsing/2008/08/food-meme.html

http://maroonmd.livejournal.com/271911.html?#cutid1

30 out of 100… oi! Gotta eat more…

I had no idea how varied my eating was!

Here’s my list

Here’s mine!

http://peacockharpy.livejournal.com/521946.html

http://yadoking.livejournal.com/125388.html

70/100! considering I’m 19, that’s not bad at all. I owe it all to my father, a real foodie.

Great meme! I’m surprised kimchee isn’t on the list, though. And I think there are too many Indian foods! (Okay, I’ll quit being so picky. It’s a great list regardless.) Now I’m going to have to start reading your blog, which I didn’t know about before now! :-)

Here are my answers: http://acanthaster.livejournal.com/6184.html

(68 out of 100, give or take) (and I agree, we who have eaten brains should get bonus points)

I am not an omnivore, though I used to be. Still, I think I am a pretty adventurous eater for a vegetarian. Thanks for this!

53 out of 100. I also tossed some other items on the end that were in “weird” category. I think you probably should have included fruitcake on this since it is the butt of so many jokes in the US. It could replace some of the liquor.

http://fenris-lorsrai.livejournal.com/373701.html#cutid1

Pretty well all my “no, won’t try it” were the liquors. I just hate the taste of most alcohol. Yick.

And I’m probably one of the few people who listed PB&J as something I hate.

[…] I’m ending this post with the Omnivore’s Hundred and the rules are as […]

http://tamarindandthyme.wordpress.com/2008/08/14/dmblgit-july-2008-edibility-category-winner/

Here’s mine! I had to kick myself over a few that I had not tried as I have had a chance to try them but then I’d forget to purchase them (Hostess fruit pie and the brown cheese). Darn!

here’s my list! score 74 out of 100. no cross outs, but a few i could live my life without trying to hard NOT eating them, mainly because of my science background (brains and blood being tops there. just too many things we dont know about zoonotics.)

http://mjolnir-babe.livejournal.com/134780.html

64 out of 100; I thought I’d have a higher number than that. Oh well…

7 I don’t want to go anywhere near.

http://ashnistrike.livejournal.com/45351.html

29, not bad given that I keep kosher and don’t drink alcohol.

I’m confused: Why is kaolin on this list?

here via friend of a friend of a… etc.

http://dbang.livejournal.com/366078.html

72 tried (although some were maybe on both sides, and really, does it have to be a Big Mac meal? A mere Big Mac doesn’t count?)
2 cross-outs

Makes me hungry…

Here’s mine. The instructions I got said, in addition to what you’d originally listed, to asterisk stuff we hadn’t tried but wanted to, and to italicize anything we *had* tried but would never eat again. By the time I got done, I had only about 40 items that I had tried and liked or that I was willing to try.

My problem is that I don’t get along well with fish, hot spices, onions or peppers, so that tends to knock a big swath through a list like this :(

Fun idea though, I’m getting a kick out of seeing everyone’s lists!

my list is here

http://anime-heart.livejournal.com/181603.html

considering I spent my early days eating only hamburgers, plain white rice, apples, and carrot sticks, I feel that 78/100 is pretty good. Much of it I ascribe to travel and living in NYC and also working as a journalist (lots of lunches …) and foodie friends.

I’ve posted this to my LJ, with comments.

About half, a good number of which come from being a Louisiana native.

Here’s mine.

Still confused about the “rose harissa” thing. Although there are probably no rose petals in the everyday harissa-in-a-jar I buy at Trader Joe’s (DON’T JUDGE ME, MY FELLOW AMERICANS), I’m guessing that the good Moroccan restaurants I’ve been to here and elsewhere might use it.

What a fun list! Also, I’m delighted to have found your blog. Here are my results:

http://hamboneandspice.blogspot.com/2008_08_01_archive.html#4801532616276206174

This was way too much fun. Definitely some things out there that I need to try. And I think I’m pretty clear on what I really don’t care to try. Thanks for posting this!

Here’s my list:

http://asphodel-ale.livejournal.com/16092.html

The lack of coffee/tea/alcohol is for religious reasons.

As for the Indian foods, they’re practically non-existent in NW Indiana–we have one formal restaurant, and one fast-food one, that I know of. I’ve personally only had it twice–once at college, and once in Canada. (The latter was NOT a pleasant experience.)

But we have a lot of Mexican dishes, as much of our population is Hispanic.

After finding this from http://nimoloth.livejournal.com (I left some commentary about the dishes that might not be familiar to a British diet here) this list has made it across the pond. 41 plus 2 half credits out of a 100, and nothing I’m unwilling to try except insects, horse, booze, and things that might kill you. And now, even though it’s late at night here as I post this, I’m hungry :P

My list is here: http://innostrantsa.livejournal.com/375468.html

A quite respectable 60/100, with one questionable entry– I’ve eaten alligator, but not crocodile– and a number of goodies yet to be tasted; some missed due to circumstances, others for lack of access (difficult to get durian, or the more esoteric cheeses/liqueurs in certain areas of the U.S.)

This was wonderful fun, as well as appetite-stimulating… and of course, it’s bedtime. Ah well. Thank you for tossing this out there. :)

My list is here.

I have 84/100; I think your list is a very good one. I’ve put a little commentary with my post about the 15 & 2 halves that I haven’t eaten.

[…] of Andrew Wheeler squared (as if one isn’t enough! Thank you Andrew Wheeler and Andrew Wheeler). The rules of the meme: bold those you have tried, strikethrough those you wouldn’t eat on a […]

Here’s mine - ignore the fugu. That makes it 74/100. Not bad.

I don’t really do fish.

http://five-centres.blogspot.com/2008/08/you-are-what-you-eat.html

Here’s the link to my list: http://elorie.livejournal.com/1172193.html

Since I’m an American, which means that you and I are separated by a common language, I’d like to get clarification on a couple of these.

Vodka jelly: do you mean something like a jam, that you would put on toast, or something made with gelatin that university students serve at parties to get drunk?

Hare: is this a synonym for rabbit, or is there a difference?

Kaolin: you mean the clay, right?

Here’s my list - I never noticed how varied my food habits are…

http://holliwood66.livejournal.com/162942.html

Azz: Thanks for the tip. I may put a permanent front-page link to the meme up so people can find it relatively easily, and it’s a subject I’ll probably be returning to as well in future posts!

Steph: There was a limit to how much shellfish I wanted to include, but I’ve had so many suggestions for things I ’should’ have included that I think a Volume 2 may be needed at some point!

Acanthaster: I think there are actually only thee Indian foods on the list, and Chicken Tikka Masala is really Anglo-Indian. Curried goat is Caribbean and currywurst is German. A lot of curry, maybe, but Indian food gets about equal representation to Mexican!

KC (and everyone else who asked): As it’s an ‘omnivore’ list, I wanted to include at least one thing people eat that isn’t actually food or drink. After all, a truly adventurous eater is interested in flavours, textures and experiences. Kaolin is indeed clay, or ‘dirt’ as some have said. It is edible - it can be bad for you, but it’s probably a lot safer than fugu - and it’s full of nutritious minerals. People with eating disorders or mineral deficiences are most likely to have eaten kaolin, but a lot of people are bolding this one because they’ve taken kaolin as a medicine, which I think is fair enough!

IceCreamEmpress: Most harissa I’ve bought has not contained rose petals, so I’m fairly sure it’s an exceptional thing - but maybe some parts of the world favour the rose petals to the exclusion of regular harissa?

Joe: Vodka jelly is what Americans call a Jell-O shot, except I suspect Jell-O shots aren’t always made with vodka, and over here we don’t necessarily have it as a shot. Hare is not the same as rabbit - I’d say hare is to rabbit as goat is to sheep. (Nor do I think alligator counts as crocodile, but a lot of folks disagree with me about that!) And yes, kaolin is clay. See above!

Thanks for this list!

I scored only a 47, but as I note here (newsbite.wordpress.com), being a vegetarian probably accounts for a lower-than-I’d-like score.

Cheers,

– Jeni

Here are my results! 88!

http://croquecamille.wordpress.com/2008/08/15/the-omnivores-hundred/

This was a fun one!

Hey, I’ve tried 80 of the things, and think I only crossed out 3 of ‘em.

In fact, I was the one who deep fried insects and got my biology class to try the beer-battered crickets.

:)

-Laura
(thanks for the fun)

We don’t necessarily do them as a shot here either; the classic method is either to use a flat baking pan (and cut them in squares like bar cookies or brownies) or an ice cube tray. Then serve, eat, and have your resident advisor find you passed out across three men’s room stalls in the morning.

Do people actually eat crocodile in the places where it’s indigenous?

http://bifemmefatale.livejournal.com/654571.html
Respectable life list, I think. :P

This was fun! I got a rather impressive 70 - but I rationalized a few things (and I counted gator as the same as croc - they’re very closely related, I can’t imagine that they would taste that differently).

Here’s my list:

Thanks!

This was fun. Thanks.

Here’s mine.

http://tambyrd.livejournal.com/80126.html

I’m surprised how much of this I ate as a child but not at all as an adult.

My list here: 49. Many of these I’ve only eaten forkfuls from other people’s plates, though.

Very thorough list!

Much to my surprise, I’ve tried 89 out of 100.

http://0walking-naked0.livejournal.com/5053.html

Also, Oh my god, you made me remember I ate roadkill.

63/100 - quite suprising

My results:

I look forward to checking more off the list in the future (some of the more hardcore spicy things can wait till last)

Here’s my take on the Omnivore’s 100:
http://pleaseexcusemydearauntsally.blogspot.com/2008/08/omnivores-100-meme.html

Some odd entries in there, but I’m surprised to see I’m three-quarters of the way through your list already. And yes, I made jelly (British, not American - and lime-flavoured, of course) with vodka in when I was a student.

http://bryangb.livejournal.com/23162.html

Great fun! My list can be found here: http://jdeq.typepad.com/jerrys_thoughts_musings_a/2008/08/the-omnivores-100.html

Here’s my list: http://pixel39.livejournal.com/458251.html

I think the only item on my list that I had to go outside the US borders for was the clotted cream tea. Everything else, well, either I’m an exceptionally adventurous eater or I’ve just geographically been well-located for gastronomic experimentation. Or I have weird relatives. What, your grandparents don’t usually eat headcheese as part of a light sandwich lunch?

Holy mole, that was pretty fun. I just did a quick count and I think I have tried 47/100, not bad for a gal who’s been vegetarian since she was 11! This was really interesting, thanks a lot!

http://karalalala.blogspot.com/2008/08/omnivore-hundred.html

62: here’s the list. At first I was surprised I’d eaten so many of the list entries, then I was disappointed that the tally was so low– obviously the more esoteric ones are near the bottom!

And here’s another one for you: http://slothphil.livejournal.com/108827.html

I’m also watching with interest how the stated rules (but not the list itself as far as I’ve noticed) are mutating as this meme circulates through my friends list from a range of different sources.

My list here
http://baralier.livejournal.com/390011.html#cutid1

The thing that I found interesting was the food that you linked definitions for. I’d never heard of Criollo chocolate or Scotch Bonnet pepper before this list and had to look up to work out what you meant by Root Beer Floater. Yet for things like Haggis, Steak tartare, and PB&H sandwich you include links. Intriguing.

This was fun! My list is here:

http://chocolateandzucchini.com/archives/2008/08/the_omnivores_hundred.php

Hey there, here’s my list. Also, in my LJ, I’ve posted a summation of my list. http://shaggycub.livejournal.com/40100.html?#cutid1

Great Meme!

I’m pretty proud of myself that I’ve had 71 off of the list. And only 9 that I won’t do. Not too shabby!

http://feastingric.blogspot.com/2008/08/omnivores-hundred.html

78/100 with six I won’t be doing (no stunt eating of hot things to get street cred, I fail to see the merit in that). I pass eating, but need improvement, and will see someone after class.

http://poettrees.livejournal.com/375987.html.

Off to try some new foods … thanks for the fun list:

http://ingeniousinkling.typepad.com/ingenious_inkling/2008/08/omnivores-hundr.html

[…] Below is a list of 100 food items every omnivore should try, or so says British food blogger Andrew Wheeler of Very Good Taste. […]

What a cool idea. I managed 42 of the 100. Check out my results here:
http://tonyandcolleen.com/cblog/?p=141

Is this where this meme came from? The version I did seems to have… mutated a bit.

http://invaderxan.livejournal.com/30328.html

(Though I threw in a few other interesting foods at the bottom, in case you’re interested!)

That was fun list. Other then the Cigar I’d try everything there at least once, and judging from the fact I’m only 30 short I have tried most of them.

I now have winter goal. :P

http://akgeekarchitect.blogspot.com/2008/08/omnivores-hundred.html

I got a 76… Although I was also curious as to why Kaolin and the Big Mac got in here… they both taste the same, as far as I can tell…

This was a fun meme. Since I live in the Southwestern USA, I was at a bit of an advantage when it came to the Mexican dishes. *g* You can read my response at http://pdlloyd.livejournal.com/21134.html.

I gave it a go, even though I’m a vegetarian. Considering…I didn’t do too badly.

http://thehappysorceress.blogspot.com/2008/08/with-some-exceptions-of-course.html

I guess I need to come up with a veg version now!

Wow–I guess living in NYC gives me quite an access to a lot of foods and being a child of immigrants makes me food-adventurous, since I’ve eaten 72 of the 100. I don’t have a food blog, but I was too fascinated to not try this. Thanks!

Here’s are my results:
http://ewephoric.blogspot.com/2008/08/we-interrupt-this-knitting-blog-for.html

This was fun. I can’t believe I’ve never had fondue. I live in Switzerland for goodness sake: http://travelfork.blogspot.com/2008/08/omnivores-hundred.html

Here’s my list though it’s a bit different than the original because I received a mutated version before I found this one.

I loves this list. I got 57 out of 100 and nothing I wouldn’t try ;)

In response to Joe: yes, people do eat crocodile in Australia, where it is indigenous and farmed for its meat and leather.

I had a wonderfully-named “dinosaur burger” at a crocodile park in Northern Queensland. The meat was like a cross between fish and chicken in texture, which I didn’t find terribly appealing and it didn’t have a memorable flavour. Still, a great one for novelty and I can tick it off my list!

Thanks to VGT for setting this wonderful list - and to Chocolate and Zucchini for leading me here. Very entertaining!

I usually just post about Greek food, but this was so much fun I couldn’t resist! Here’s mine:

http://mamastaverna.com/the-omnivores-hundred/

Probably even more fun than doing the list was pondering, “What would I put in such a list if I were to make one?”

The BBC did a list like this awhile back…in fact much of what is on their list seems to be included in yours.

Here’s the link to my list back then (the original BBC article seems to be gone now). http://snurl.com/3h82m

I’ve had 73 of the 100 here. There are a lot of things on your list that I just don’t know if I care enough to go out of my way to try…Kaolin for one. And well, roadkill is just not happening!

Personally I wish that I had never had a Big Mac now that I know more about what goes into them. It’s far too much a way of life for most of America and McDonald’s was nearly a staple when I was growing up. Everytime I see my nephews scarfing down their burgers and fries I think I nearly die a little inside.

I’ve never tried sweetbreads or offal but I’d try it. Some of the foods on the list don’t seem popular with folks from the U.S. - I’ve never seen horse meat for sale here, and offal isn’t all that popular. All: Thank you so much for all the kind comments! It’s fascinating to see how the list has evolved since it left my care!

Baralier: Criollo didn’t get a link only because Wikipedia didn’t have one. I probably should have linked to an artisan chocolatier instead!

Crystal King: Now that you mention it, I do remember the BBC’s 50 Things… programme, but I can promise it didn’t directly inspire this list - and thankfully there isn’t much overlap.

Jane: My fellow VGT blogger Jill is the in-house vegetarian, so I’ll see if she’s interested in putting together a veggie list!

Well, somewhat dissapointing. 71/100. I have to say there is nothing on that list I would not at some point consume, though the roadkill would depend on the animal and the circumstance.
I am pleased to say I have eaten insect, one of those fat ant things that fill up with honey. I admit it was chocolate coated. Do witchity grubs count as insects I wonder?
I can not say crocodile reminds me of chicken or fish. In fact, not to be rude, Ifind people who say ’such and such tastes like chicken’ tnd to have an underdeveloped sense of taste. Chicken tastes like chicken, very little else does.
Carp. Now carp is abundant in Australia, our river netwroks are choked with them. No one eats them. In fact when you catch them, you are not allowed to throw them back. You have to let them die. It has often struck me what a terrible waste of an apparently flavoursome fish this is. A Polish friend of mine informs me her father believes this is because Australians do not know how to prepare carp properly, it must be caught alive and allowed several days in a bath tub with regular changed of water to flush out the mud. If anyone has carp preperation instructions, do let us know.

Oh,I forgot to say, I think it does one good to eat a McDonalds meal every few years, to remind one what real food is actually like. To be honest their sundaes are actually damned fine, in Australia anyway.

I blame my low score of 42 1/2 (seasonally adjusted) on the fact I don’t live in the northern hemisphere (and my tools, clearly). (And maybe the Catholic Church)
http://niallniallorangepeel.blogspot.com/2008/08/omnivores-hundred.html

I’ve eaten only half of the items on the list! It made me realize how little I’ve known about the food world. But I also don’t agree with the list. I think that things like Natto, Octopus, chicken feet, shark fin should be there instead of pocky or hostess fruit pie.

Oh dear, only 77 ! I’d be happy to try anything I haven’t so far, except for what I consider to be American junk (peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, McDonalds, doughnuts etc). But can anyone tell me what S’mores and Hostess Fruit Pie are? More of the same, perhaps?

thanks!

Here is my list: I score 91. Does anyone have 100?

I’ve eaten a respectable 68 of the items, which isn’t bad given that I live in the tiny state of Vermont, and there’s not much exotica available.

If I were to come up with my own 100, the list would include maple-syrup, bubble tea, raw oysters (vs. plain old oysters), Parmigiano-Reggiano and guanciale (cured pig’s jowls, mmm).

Cheers!

I received this challenge thru Clotilde’s blog, and have reposted on my own. Interesting choices: some seem not so adventurous, like Pb&J and Krispy Kreme, but others (like Roadkill) just seem to be there as a challenge. For me it is a question of texture more than anything: insects just strike me as too crunchy to avoid what they are.

GREAT list!!
I got a 74. not too shabby. I was blessed with foodies for parents. I can remember trying my first oyster before I was 10 years old. I think I was 8 years old when I tried abalone for the first time. (Redondo Beach, CA: Millie Riera’s Restruant. sadly, long gone now…)

Wendy Hutton:

S’mores are traditionally a snack to enjoy while camping here in the states. You need grahm crackers, hershey bar and marshmellows.
What you do is skewer a marshmellow on a stick and roast it over an open fire till it is lightly toasted and gooey on the inside. then you take a couple pieces of the hersey bar, put it on the cracker and sandwich the hot marshmellow between the cracker with the chocolate and another cracker. Enjoy the hot molten goodness of the gooey marshmellow with the chocolate and grahm. mmmm…..

Hostess fruit pie, yes, is a typical American Junkfood. But the blackberry pie is the best of them all.

& whoever said bubble tea, I’m with ya! No place in Texas by me makes it. It’s one thing I really miss from CA.

I seem to be slow on the draw, but got here nonetheless!

I got 75/100, with only one I wouldn’t try.

My apologies.

88 /100. Would probably be way lower if I hadn’t eaten that gross American stuff before I was old enough to know better.

The only item I wouldn’t consider eating is clam chowder in a bread bowl. Haven’t encountered roadkill, crocodile (have had alligator), fugu, or kaolin. Never heard of phall or rose harissa before. I’ve eaten lots of nettles in pasta and soup but never came across nettle tea. Despite major efforts, I have yet to get my hands on poutine. I’ve twice been at sushi bars where they ran out of Kobe beef earlier in the evening, damn it. I don’t remember having had jello shots or a dirty martini but that could be true regardless.

I’ve hit 64 so far, only one I wouldn’t try. No Cognac (OK) and Cigars (no cancer for me, thanks). Most surprising great food: sweetbreads; Most embarrassing food I’ve eaten: Big Mac (not in many, many years). Wonderful foods I was surprised to see on the list: Gumbo, Soft Shell Crabs, Oysters, Rice and Beans (Haven’t they ever eaten in New Orleans?).

My “score” ended up at 79 eaten and sorta enjoyed, some more than others, obviously. I counted 17 foods I’d not tried for reasons of 1) no opportunity or 2) ignorance. Then I listed 9 foods I would not try even under the pain of death.

I see that my blog linked automatically to you, but I thought I’d write personally anyway.

Terrific idea.

I kept missing tasty things I’ve tried. I finally got the list up to 19 items. Omnivore, indeed.

Thanks! This was so much fun to do. I was both struck by the breadth of my eating experience and my ignorance. I loved looking the stuff up that I had never heard of. I don’t think, though that I will ever be able to bring myself to eat roadkill.

That was fun!! I’m afraid I got a shameful 71% (I think I calculated correctly) and there are some things on the list that I really question. Krispy Kreme? McD’s Big Mac Meal?? It’s my feeling that no self-respecting omnivore would deign to eat those things.

This is not to imply that doughnuts or fast food hamburgers are to be avoided though.

I would add McDonalds apple pie to the list, Its so wrong yet so right:-)

That was fun! I scored 86.5, and the half was because I wasn’t sure if silkworm larvae (bondaegi in Korea) counted as “whole insects.”

Here are my results:

Here is a link to my results.

At the time I wrote the entry, there were 12 items I had not tried. However I found a bottle of absinthe on Sunday, and enjoyed it not only in the traditional poncy absinthe manner, diluted by a trickle of water running through a sugar cube, but also as straight shots of neon green firewater. Despite the wormwood, I am still sane and alive. =)

I scored 86.5, and the half is because I wasn’t sure if silkworm larvae (bondaegi in Korea) counted as “whole insects”.

Got most of ‘em.

Had a hard time with step 3. There is pretty much nothing I wouldn’t at least try, if it’s what the people around me are eating. Part of it is respect or cultural relativism or something, but another big part is fear of missing out on something.

One nice thing on the list — several of the few things I hadn’t tried I will now, having looked them up, actively seek out.

Here’s my two cents - 57 out of 100.

I felt I had a pretty good showing, only 21 items that I haven’t had yet. I’m not sure what the food version of #63, Kaolin, of is supposed to be. The only reference I could find was a mineral which might contain radioactive isotopes. Surely that can’t be right!

Thanks for the fun!

That was fun! I was surprised at how few I’ve tried. Here’s my list.

A very American list!
And number 37 - clotted cream tea. You never, never, never put cream in tea. Milk, and not full-cream, either. Cream is such a wrong thing to put in tea! (I take it you’re talking real tea, the stuff you get from tea leaves, not that herbal muck).
Tea is too delicate to bear the heavy taste of cream, and clotted cream - oh no! It just doesn’t go.
Maybe fresh English strawberries, picked that morning from a Cambridgeshire farm, with Cornish clotted cream and freshly baked scones.
Now that is nice!

I love this list! I cant believe how viral it has become, it has even jumped the ocean over here to the US. I have tried 65 foods on the list and possibly more that I dont remember. I posted my list here http://theholisticchef.blogspot.com/2008/08/omnivores-hundred.html. Thanks for sharing!

Condiment Queen: I think the alternative lists are linked to in the comments here. I’m afraid I haven’t been collecting them, though maybe I should!

Jay: I considered balut and hakarl as well, but I didn’t want this to be a long list of food dares! There’s a place for a few of those on the list, but I wanted to strike a balance.

Lynne: Your e-mail address suggests you’re from the UK, so I’m disappointed in you! A few Americans have misunderstood the phrase ‘clotted cream tea’, but you’re the only Briton to make that mistake! I’m referring to cream tea made with real clotted cream, just as you describe. It’s often called Cornish cream tea or Devonshire cream tea - but I wanted to avoid that particular bun fight! As for the ‘American’ angle - I’ve responded to that over here, but really I think America is quite fairly represented. There are fewer entries in here from the Americas than there are for Asia or Europe. It’s funny how people’s personal angles influence the way they read a list like this!

This was fun. Thanks for making it!

Only 49 which surprised me, since I’m open to trying stuff out and have eaten out a lot in the UK and Northern Europe. This led me to assume this was a Northern American list, but maybe it’s just a metropolitan one. A lot of what I’ve not eaten I’ve never actually had the chance to eat.

Andrew,

You posed a very interesting - thought provoking - even revealing list/question - at least for those who think food is more than fuel.

I might hold the line personally at the “drunken shrimp” (Baijiu) - but would first watch someone else eat one. Raw is alright by me - but wiggling?? If there were marinades, wasabi, or the like, to go with wiggling shrimp, I might try one - like my first oyster-half-shell.

I would take Steak Tartare off the “conspicuous comsumption” sub-list. It’s simple to make, even without purchasing a whole tenderloin (as Oliver suggests in his cooking manual) - a single filet mignon would work.

You have a point, though, in that most of us are unlikely to encounter tartare, except in a fine restaurant. My first was served with a quail’s egg.

(BTW I skip the quail’s egg at home)

Julia Child cited round steak for tartare in “The Way to Cook” and she skips the quail’s egg, too).

I will eventually get around to $120 malt - but am having too much fun working up to it. I find it hard to believe that I will like any malt better than Glenmorangie Port Barrel Finished - but am willing to try (might just have one now - or two).

Wow - 55!

Thanks for taking me on a trip down memory lane of the many culinary exploits of my 32 year life thus far. From Crocodile at the Carnivore in Nairobi Kenya to Paneer at Haandi in London, Pho in the Asian area in Atlanta, GA and that somewhat regrettable hot dog from a sidewalk vendor in Times Square, I have lots of tales to tell. Here’s my marked-up list. Interesting.

71 out of 100, and only 3 I wouldn’t want to try (roadkill, kaolin and a cigar with my Cognac). I don’t really consider myself an adventurous eater, so I chalk up my relatively high score to the physical circumstances of living in the American Midwest as a child (venison, McDonalds, Krispy Kreme, Spam, etc.), living in Japan as a young adult (eel, Poky, horse, kobe beef, flowers, fugu, etc.), and now living in northern California (all the Latin American, Indian and other Asian items).

I got 51 out of the 100, but I’m sure to cover many more in the years to come. Had never heard of poutine, but now that I know, I’m going to try and get some on an upcoming trip to Canada. Results are here: http://culturally-confused.blogspot.com/2008_09_01_archive.html

Great good fun! Love the the explanations for why things are included on the list, and your nostalgic attachment to American culture. Those Hostess Fruit Pies figure prominently in millions of childhoods…Completely agree with your cigar theory, too. Have eaten all but 11 of these foods. Completely DISAGREE with your position on eating horse, which to Americans, with our wild-west/colonizing-the-plains-with-horses-as-devoted-companions history, is tantamount to eating children.

This was great fun to do! Thanks for the great idea and if anyone is interested,
This is my list. I got 57% - enough for a pass!! My saving grace though is that I dont think there is anything I wouldnt try….

Add my list to the pile.

With a couple of questions (does alligator count for crocodile, and habanero in a salsa for that? I said yes) I came up with 74, posted here I also came up with a list of substitutions that I would make:

for snake: tagliatelle pasta with bolognese sauce
for rose harrissa: Morrocan couscous
for chicken tikka masala: injera with a platter of Ethiopian food
for kaolin: dove or woodcock
for hostess fruit pie: a real fried pie
for currywurst: guanciale
for prickly pear: okra
for wasabi peas: whole hog barbecue
for s’mores: citrus fresh from the tree
for poutine: a first-growth French wine (this one I’ve not tried, yet)
for carob chips: unpastuerized buttermilk (nor this one)

69 out of 100. Well, some of them I had as a kid. And a few that I had a similar version of. i.e. Steamed blood in Thailand, close enough to black pudding. And of course, mead in for fruit wine. Hopefully that is an acceptable reach. :)

http://roxanne-rr.blogspot.com/2008/09/omnivores-hundred.html

At first I was surprised by the number of things I’ve eaten, but then I realized that it is only approximtely 45% of the list. I didn’t cross anything out as a “never” because I don’t like to preclude possibilities. However, I will say that things like “snake” are highly unlikely to be eaten by me!

77/78 out of 100, depending on how you define roadkill…meaning, how was it killed, who killed it? I’m not going to say I haven’t thought about hauling a deer into my car if I hit it on an abandoned road, because I very well might. As is, I’ve only ever had one run in with a deer, and it effing ran into my car and bounced off the side.

There is nothing I won’t try once if the opportunity presents itself. :)

For population survey purposes, I am from a metropolitan area than has a large diplomatic population; we kind of dig our international foods.

Well, still a ways to go: my score is 54/100, with 10 that I wouldn’t touch with a 10-foot pole! That leaves 36 to try… http:\\www.btwixtandbtween.typepad.com.

68/100 http://www.thealders.net/blogs/2008/09/16/go-ahead-eat-it/

Great list - I thought I would score higher but alas I still have much gustatory adventuring to do it seems. :)

Got to know of your meme by way of Alejna at Collecting Tokens. Thanks for thinking it up; had fun doing it. My effort can be seen here:-
http://webs-of-significance.blogspot.com/2008/09/omnivores-100.html

In sum: by my calculation, it’s 71 items eaten, 18 items not yet eaten and 11 items that I never want to eat! :)

That was a fun exercise. 51 out of 100 — time to book a spot at our local Michelin 3-star!

http://bonggamom.blogspot.com/2008/09/omnivores-100.html

Impressive list, but where’s Canada Goose, or Rockfish?

my food list

Goat’s milk is *absolutely* revolting. I DID taste it but no amount of money will make that stuff ever touch a tastebud ever again.

Borscht though, is pretty good despite *sounding* like the noise one makes when horfing.

Hmmm, I had actually tried more than I thought I would have. (And I had to look up fewer than I thought I’d have to.) Not bad for a girl in a small town in Indiana!

Loved this. I quite proudly got 89. Surprised myself.
http://hautenthekitchen.wordpress.com/

79 out of 100, not bad!

Now THIS is the sort of challenge I like to unwittingly stumble upon late at night! 78 out of 100 - the evidence can be found at http://www.scribblethenibbles.blogspot.com - a lot (but not all) of which are courtesy of my recent four months deliberately eating my way round the world and unwittingly notching up my numbers for the Omni’s 100. Now for that remaining 22…

I knew this would be fun, but now that I’ve completed the exercise I’ve indeed had more fun than anticipated and learned a little more about my culinary self: http://www.spolay.com/2008/09/omnivorous-pursuits.html

Here’s my list. Not bad…I guess I am an adventurous eater who traveled a bit ;-) Some things I might have eaten unknowingly.

I won’t do any of the endangered species and I probably would have to think twice about eating anything that could give me BSE (although I used to eat brains, kidneys etc when growing up (loved it, too). Not big on the different liquors - I try but don’t enjoy. Chardonnay covers most of my alcoholic needs just fine.

My list is here: http://transformativeyear.wordpress.com/2008/10/16/the-omnivores-hundred/. 75! Not bad.

Great list, really made me think about food, and there were a couple I had never heard of here’s my list http://www.inyourkitchen.com/wordpress/2008/10/16/the-omnivores-100/

I love this list! I made it half way (50%). So much food out there, so little time!

I didn’t post this on my blog — but I’ve eaten 80 of the items on the list. The only ones I wouldn’t try are Haggis and Durian.

Here it is! Maybe you are interested, it is my list!
