SOE is carrying out some essential maintenance on Tuesday September 23, between 9am and 1pm Pacific (5 PM 9pm British Summer Time), that will impact your ability to log into the official website.
This means that during the maintenance window, individuals will not be able to log in to the Burning Sea forums or submit user content. This should not impact your ability to log into the game.
...In other words, forum PvP is suspended in favor of actual game PvP!
That's right me hearties! And to commemorate this auspicious day, Flying Lab Software has created special missions and secret booty just for the occasion.
Until September 26th2008, players can log in to Pirates of the Burning Sea and party with the grog-swillin, booty-plundering founders of the day, Capn Slappy and Ol Chumbucket. These rum-swiggin salts will be taking their rightful place in the Burning Sea as they hand out missions and teach everyone a thing or two about getting booty. Join the crew to party and talk piratical talk!
This holiday also coincides with Flying Lab's Free 14-Day Trial Key, so set sail with Pirates of the Burning Sea; its more fun than dancing the hempen jig (Thats slang for being hung)!
Flying Lab has just announced their Free Trial program! If you or anyone you know would like to try out the game without paying a subscription, you may request a 14-day trial key at this link. You must provide a valid email address so you can receive your key and further instructinos on how to activate it.
Trial keys are only valid on new Pirates of the Burning Sea accounts. If you decide to continue with your subscription after the 14 days are over, you will have to purchase a copy of the game and choose a subscription plan. All the characters you created during the trial period will be carried over once you start subscribing.
For more information, check out the official announcement on the Burning Sea website.
The testbed is going to be pretty hot and heavy for a while. Milestone 1.8 had been put up for testing, and I'm sure a lot of pirates, privateers and the like will want to test the new features.
And since the developers love to really shake things up:
To make testing these out even more fun, weve decided to add an element of danger. This Sunday, at 3pm Pacific (11pm British Summer Time), we will be putting a full-PVP zone around every conquerable port on Testbed.
If you haven't seen the new Pirates of the Burning Sea Official Site, then you need to get over there. The design is brand new. It's more streamlined and less dark. I'm not sure how I feel about it. It might take some getting use to, but.... there are new features. There is a new way for them to put up new infromation in a quick and easy to read way. They'll be a new guide section. Well, I'll let them explain it. I don't fully understand, but it sounds as though people will get more information in a useable format, and that's always a good thing.
Thats right mateys, a whole week and not just a day! As every pirate well knows, September 19 is Talk Like a Pirate Day, and like we mentioned a couple of weeks ago, one of the highlights of Pirates of the Burning Seas Milestone 7 is that Capn Slappy and Ol Chumbucket will be ingame to mark the occasion. Well, we caught up with Flying Labs Theresa Pudenz at PAX last weekend and she tells us that it wont just be for a day, but for a whole week!
They sent us pictures and we modeled them and put them in the game so these NPCs will be handing out missions, one of which will teach you to talk like a pirate.
The whole week of September 19th, these two characters may be found in Marsh Harbour and Tortuga and all players regardless of nation affiliation will be able to take quests from them. The final quest reward is a never before seen item which Theresa stops short of naming, simply saying that I believe theres some sort of eyepatch involved.
She did send us this picture and it's worth a thousand words
We visited the Pirates of the Burning Sea booth at Penny Arcade Expo last weekend and took some video footage for you! Several developers were there to answer questions and demo the game, and we spotted some fans helping out. Some of them had even traveled thousands of miles to make it to the "con"!
For those of you who didn't make it to Seattle, enjoy the video!
The pirates were busy at PAX. The official site has a nice rundown of many of the things they did at PAX and how they were covered. Head over there for a chest full of PAX fun booty. Hehe, get it! It's like a pirate joke!
This month's PotBS-themed computer desktop calendar, designed by Vault staff lead artist Rhyssa Fireheart features the beautiful landscapes of the new Pointe--Pitre.

Spawn points will be arranged in a pentagon shape.
Allowing multiple sides means that battles will be more dangerous and international relations become more important.
Jumping from one NPC battle to another to get through a hotspot will be dangerous with five-sided battles. Instead of preventing hostile members of other nations from joining, it just changes their spawn location and wind orientation. When sides 3-5 join the battle, theyre automatically orientated towards the center of the battle.
Also mentioned are ad-hoc alliances, outnumbered battles and new battle marker UI.
We will be upgrading our live servers to build 1.7: Black Sails at Dawn during the usual maintenance window (1:30am-5:00am Pacific / 9.30am-1.00pm British Summer Time) on Thursday, August 28th.
When build 1.7 is deployed to our live servers, character copies to the testbed server will be active.
The developers have been pretty actively engaging the community. They put on events, they take feedback, and as Fraxl says on the official site they are listening.
Last weekends Testbed event was a ton of fun and we got lots of great feedback about the new 1.7 features. Thank you to everyone who played and gave us constructive criticism! With all the discussion these changes have sparked, we knew wed have to tweak the new systems to incorporate your feedback. I have the pleasure of writing this devlog to let you know exactly what were doing.
There were two main areas of concern for players on Testbed new rules for PvP battles on the Open Sea and the new camera behavior. Ill talk about PvP rules first. Weve made four adjustments to the system based on your input.
There is a lot more. See for yourself and I think you'll see how hard everyone is working to make the game even better. It's nice to know someone is looking after the pirates these days.
The lovely Pirates of the Burning Sea team was at GenCon in Indianapolis again this year and we managed to snag our favorite Community Manager Troy Aether Hewitt for a quick word on whats new with Pirates.
The thing that Im really excited about right now is that were gearing up for our big trial campaign. Were going to invite the entire world to come try the game out. We also have 1.7 coming out and it has a brand new tutorial, a brand new camera, and all kinds of new features. Since 1.5 weve had a real improvement in the game and its reflected in our community, their opinion of the game as well as the number of people who are resubbing and coming back and trying the game again.
Our Man In Havana has moved to Antigua and has posted his latest report from there!
Moving to Antigua was not just an improvement, it was a rejuvenation of the game for all those involved. French, Spanish and Pirate society leaders have all expressed great happiness at what they have found on Antigua.
Read the whole story and find out what makes Antigua so special.
Remember when they had those carnivals at school where you could dunk your teachers? Yeah, me neither, but I wish they'd had those at my school. But, check this article out from the main site.
To make things more interesting, a group of FLS staff will be sailing the PVP zones on Testbed ready to be sunk by take on all challengers! Well be online this Thursday, August 21st from 3:00 4:00pm Pacific / 11:00pm Midnight British Summer Time. Staff in attendance will include Taelorn, Snap, fraxl and Rhaegar.
Ok, they are just asking for it at this point. Yeah, it's only on the testbed server, but come on! Let's do this!
The official site has a new article about texuring and 3-d modeling that sheds some light on the development process and the artistry that goes into the game.
Character Lead Mat Staltman writes a nice article about some upcoming changes that everyone should enjoy. He goes into the process of creating new clothing that will allow people to show off their accomplishments a bit, and hints at some new animation advances that should make avatars look even better than before. All this is comming up in patch 1.7.
