Bejeweled Twist Announced
- BERJAYA 0 Comments
PopCap's latest money maker will officially bow in late October:

PopCap Games, the leading developer and publisher of casual games, today announced that it will be launching the next entry in its flagship franchise Bejeweled next month. Titled Bejeweled Twist, the new game has been in development for more than three years and will bring a completely new perspective to the "Match-3" genre of puzzle games that the original Bejeweled pioneered eight years ago. PopCap plans to formally unveil the game at a gala event at Seattle's Experience Music Project Sci-Fi Museum and Hall of Fame on the evening of Monday, October 27, 2008 -- the first such launch event in casual games history. The game will carry a retail price of US$19.95 and will initially be available exclusively via Web download from http://www.popcap.com.

"As our first and most popular game, we're particularly dedicated to Bejeweled and wanted to make sure that our next offering in the lineup delivered as much innovation, polish, and sheer pleasure as possible," explained Jason Kapalka, co-founder and chief creative officer at PopCap. "We spent a long time conceiving and prototyping a totally new direction for Bejeweled Twist. The game will be immediately recognizable to Bejeweled fans, and as accessible as earlier titles in the series, but with far more depth and flexibility. Previous versions of Bejeweled appealed to a pretty broad audience, but we're confident Bejeweled Twist will offer a compelling experience for everyone, from the novice gamer to the seriously hardcore player."

Why Gears of War 2 Isn't Coming to the PC
- BERJAYA 18 Comments
In the midst of pimping Gears of War 2, Epic's Cliff Bleszinski claims that PC gamers who know how to change a video card are "savvy enough" to pirate games, which is why Gears of War 2 won't be making a PC appearance:

Do you see the Xbox 360 as the main platform as opposed to the PC? During the whole Unreal time it was very much PC focused.

The PC right now is a fair amount different to what it was back in the day, with all the badly integrated video chips. Here's the problem right now; the person who is savvy enough to want to have a good PC to upgrade their video card, is a person who is savvy enough to know bit torrent to know all the elements so they can pirate software. Therefore, high-end videogames are suffering very much on the PC.

So piracy was a main point for you...

Right now, it makes sense for us to focus on Xbox 360 for a number of reasons. Not least PCs with multiple configurations and piracy.

But when the dust has settled, is there any possibility of Gears 2 on PC?

No.

Definitely not?

No.

Age of Conan Server Merge in the Works
- BERJAYA 8 Comments
Craig Morrison, the guy charged with righting the Age of Conan ship after the departure of Gaute Godager, lets AoC fans knows what's going on with the game via this forum post:

Another aspect which has popped up in the forums recently is whether we are going to do a server merge or not, and I can today confirm that we are actively working on an approach to merge servers, both in Europe and North America. It’s important for us to ensure the best gameplay experience for you all, and more healthy populations on each and every server will make sure we maintain healthy communities for the game in the future. Still, there are many complexities involved in this, and we want to ensure that everything happens as fair and streamlined as possible. That work has now started, and we are naturally making sure that guilds and players can get to new servers in the best possible way. We will come back with more info on this, but I hope that this will serve as a positive injection to the social scene in the game.

Lastly for today (I think I have taken a good deal of your time already, hopefully constructively so!) I also wanted to mention that we‘ve come very far with the DirectX 10 version, which we unfortunately had to keep on internal test-servers for launch. It’s now almost ready for the full test server. Once the next game-play update is out expect to start to see the DX10 functionality coming to the test environment. How long it will take to transition to live will depend on the testing of course, but it’s starting to shape up nicely. Having done some reviews of it internally over the last few weeks I can admit that a few of the features really do give some added visual punch. I know it’s a feature that is long awaited and I can assure you the technical folk here are working flat out to try and get the version in a state where it can be considered for live release.

Playstation 3 Games Stolen, Recovered, Stolen Again
- BERJAYA 5 Comments
A lorry carrying £600,000 of games was hijacked in the UK, recovered by police, and then pinched from the cops' secure depot before they had the chance to process it for evidence:

Seven pallets of titles, including 16,000 copies of war game Brothers In Arms: Hell’s Highway, were loaded on to a blue Renault lorry and driven to Leeds — but cops there spotted its fake number plates and recovered the missing gear.

It was taken to a tightly-controlled compound — then stolen again hours later.

The lorry was then found empty last Monday in a Matalan car park in nearby Bradford, West Yorks.

A police spokesman said: “We are pursuing a number of lines of enquiry, including eBay transactions where a number of the games have been potentially identified as being advertised for sale. Arrests have already been made in respect of this.”

Movie Director Zack Snyder to Make Games for EA
    - BERJAYA 5 Comments
Helmer of Dawn of the Dead, 300, and Watchmen signs deal with Electronic Arts:

Electronic Arts Inc. today announced that renowned filmmaker Zack Snyder will bring his unique vision to the development of three original EA games. Snyder will lead the creative direction of the games while working in partnership with the production team at EA Los Angeles, the same studio currently collaborating with Steven Spielberg on Boom Blox and other games in development with Mr. Spielberg. Snyder’s recent works include hit movies, “The Dawn of the Dead” and “300”. He is also currently working on an adaptation of “Watchmen” based on the legendary comic book series, due to release in March 2009.

Under the agreement with Cruel & Unusual Films, EA will own the intellectual properties and the game franchises will be developed, published and distributed worldwide by EA. The relationship between Snyder and EA includes efforts to extend the game franchises into theatrical motion pictures. Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

"I think video games are cool because they offer an opportunity to tell a story in an entirely unique way,” said Zack Snyder. “Being a long time fan of the games EA creates, I look forward to collaborating with them."

Frank Gibeau, President of EA Games Label said, “Zack Snyder has a fresh and bold creative style that resonates with our core audience. Zack is the perfect partner for joining us in creating powerful new interactive fiction.”

The deal was brokered on behalf of Mr. Snyder and Cruel & Unusual Films by Creative Artists Agency.

As you might have guessed I played a bunch of Warhammer Online over the weekend. I'm level 25 now (the cap is 40, in case you didn't know). The repetitive questing is starting to grate on me. If the exp cap was higher for grinding against mobs I'd probably be doing that instead. The battlegrounds are great fun when the queues are fast, but when prime time ends, you're lucking to get in once an hour. I know I've mentioned this before, but the conservative server population caps put a damper on things, in the off-peak hours especially. I did manage to do a couple runs in the first real dungeon (Mt Gunbad, I think it was called) and got my first purple item, so that was a nice distraction for a few hours. I think I'll post part two of our Warhammer review when I hit 30, then part three at level 40. It's a dirty job, but someone has to do it...

    Today's question:

How many months do you typically subscribe to a massively multiplayer game before cancelling?

Dario Argento Goes into Dead Space
    - BERJAYA 10 Comments
Asia Argento's dad, Dario Argento, will be doing some voice-over work for the Italian version of Dead Space, 1UP has learned:

Well-loved Italian horror director Dario Argento is lending his vocal skills to the Italian version of EA's Dead Space, breathing life into the character of Doctor Kyne. Argento's work has heavily influenced modern horror and slasher movies. When offered the chance to step out from behind the camera to lend his voice to the survival horror game, Argento responded with excitement. In his own words:

"Dead Space truly captures the essence of fear in an entertainment medium. Not only is it the most terrifying game I've ever played, but it's also one that all fans of horror will appreciate."

IGN shared their impressions of Fallout 3 after spending some 6-hours with the game.

    - BERJAYA 2 Comments
Capcom has released a fact sheet for Resident Evil 5, giving a bit of a lowdown on the game, which is scheduled to ship out worldwide on March 13th, 2009:

The biohazard threat has not ended: Just when it seemed that the menace of Resident Evil had been destroyed, along comes a new terror to send shivers down player’s spines. Chris Redfield, returning Resident Evil hero, has followed the path of the evil literally around the globe. After joining a new organization, Chris heads to Africa where the latest bioterrorism threat is literally transforming the people and animals of the city into mindless, maddened creatures. He is joined by a new partner, Sheva Alomar, who lends her strength, intelligence and sharp-shooting skills to the mission. In order to survive, Chris and Sheva must work together to take on the challenges of discovering the truth behind this evil plot. Utilizing a revolutionary new co-op mode of gameplay, players will be able to assume control of either Chris or Sheva and experience Resident Evil in new ways. In Resident Evil 5, Capcom will have players fearing the daylight as much as they have feared shadow in previous games.

    CD Projekt Talks DRM
    - BERJAYA 4 Comments
ArsTechnica has interviewed CD Projekt CEO Michal Kicinski and Good Old Games Managing Director Adam Oldakowski, two of the big brains behind Good Old Games. In the interview, the pair talk about the latest four-letter word in the gaming industry, DRM:

Ars: Do you think the issue of DRM is taking the focus away from what PC gaming is doing right? No one is talking about the gameplay of Spore, for example.

MK: It's true. DRM is a very hot topic these days. To me it means that the solutions proposed by the companies are very controversial. Of course, it would be better if they wouldn't be so controversial, and then we could simply talk about what we like the most—naturally, these are the games themselves. I believe that the subject of PC games is still worth looking at, and there are lots of things we can do in the future to retain its appeal. Although the PC platform doesn't have such strong PR and marketing support, its open nature offers huge opportunities for creative thinking, not only concerning games themselves, but also considering distribution or developing new genres like browser games. In my opinion, the rumors about the death of the PC as a gaming platform are greatly exaggerated.

Activision: Music Labels Should be Paying Us
    - BERJAYA 24 Comments
Activision CEO Bobby Kotick thinks that instead of asking for more money to license music for games, music labels should be paying the game publishers:

"There's a misunderstanding of the value we bring to the catalog," Kotick says, discussing the issue with the Wall Street Journal.

"When you look at the impact it can have on an Aerosmith, Van Halen or Metallica, it's really significant, so much so that you sort of question whether or not, in the case of those kinds of products, you should be paying any money at all and whether it should be the reverse."

Kotick has responded to Bronfman's comments in the past, describing them as "one-sided and not "respectful of how much we’ve done to bring new audiences into the market."

To support his position, he has also noted that Activision's Guitar Hero: Aerosmith generated more revenue for the band than any individual Aerosmith album.

Silent Hill: Homecoming Denied Classification in Australia
    - BERJAYA 8 Comments
Australia's Office of Film and Literature Classification claim Silent Hill: Homecoming contains "excessive violence" and have refused to classify the game, effectively banning it from store shelves:

Silent Hill: Homecoming won't see a commercial release in Australia. Citing "excessive violence," the Office of Film and Literature Classification refused to classify Konami's upcoming survival horror title -- no rating means no release in the region.

With the decision, Homecoming becomes the fourth title that the OFLC has refused to classify just this year. It releases in North America on September 30, but distributor Atari would have shipped the game in Australia on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC in November.

No More Consoles From Sony and Microsoft?
    - BERJAYA 54 Comments
Taking part in a recent debate, Alex St. John of Wild Tangent predicts the end of consoles:

St. John claims that Sony has announced it will not make a new console for 10 years. He also says that when asking representatives at Sony and Microsoft who is the head of the next console development, they will not name a name.

The major reason neither Sony nor Microsoft will make another console, according to St. John, is because the business does not make financial sense. It's not news to anyone in the game industry that current generation hardware is sold at a loss to the company.

And at Microsoft, that business model is unlikely to float any longer now that Bill Gates has retired and Steve Ballmer -- whom St. John calls "a money guy" -- is leading the company. Consoles just aren't profitable, he says, and the motive to repeat those failures just isn't there.

On the other hand, Townsend and Stevenson argue that the install base is already there. With millions of Xbox 360s and PlayStation 3s already hooked up in people's homes, it already is an immovable element of the modern living room. Game consoles will drive the high-definition entertainment experience, says Stevenson.

Worldwide player base now at 500,000. 490,000 of which are signed in as Destruction.

The Armies have assembled and the Worldwide WAAAGH! is Underway! Mythic Entertainment, an Electronic Arts Inc. studio, today announced that in the first week since launch over 500,000 new players have registered for fantasy MMORPG, Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning (WAR), in North America, Europe and the Oceanic territories. EA's most highly pre-ordered PC title, WAR has now become the fastest-selling new MMO of all time.

"In just one week we have a half a million people playing WAR online, and the ranks of Order and Destruction are growing at a record-breaking pace for a new MMORPG," said Mark Jacobs, co-founder and general manager of Mythic Entertainment. "We spent years working to provide players with the most stable, epic, and polished online world we could, but it is the players that have truly brought the Age of Reckoning to life."

It's friday already? Dizaaaaaaaamn! I've pretty much lost track of time and space from playing Warhammer non-stop for the past week. I was in my first keep siege last night and I have to say, that was the only part of the game that has even vaguely reminded me of Dark Age of Camelot so far. I wasn't able to get very good line-of-sight to nuke people on the walls, but other than that, it was good clean fun.

    Today's question:

What games topped your most played list last week?
