Bros in Arms or Duke Nukem?
Make sense? No? Good. Here's a taste:
I'm a big fan of Mythic. I literally have over two years of /played time in its other MMORPG – Dark Age of Camelot. Sadly, I can't get that time back, but on the bright side – I probably saved a ton of money by not doing crazy stuff like going out and having a life for so long (that's what I tell myself at least). I have sampled other massively multi-player games like World of WarCraft and Age of Conan, but never really got hooked on them for more than a month or two. Will Warhammer Online put me back in the gaming rehab clinic? Time will tell; here's my review of the first 20 levels.
Remember, you can rate the game too at the bottom (or side) of the review. Snap to it!

Independent studio 2015, Inc. has opened a new development branch, Tornado Studios, focused on casual games for the mass market."The success of Nintendo's latest consoles, and the recent growth of the casual games market as a whole, has provided an incredible opportunity for us to reach a whole new audience," said 2015 founder Tom Kurdika.
The company has secured an undisclosed injection of funding in the range of "several million dollars" that will apparently be applied to both Tornado and 2015 proper.
“Spore is a hit,” said Frank Gibeau, president of the EA Games Label. “Will Wright’s latest delivers an incredibly diverse game that appeals to casual gamers and the core alike. We’re off to a great start moving into the holiday season and believe Spore will deliver a platform of creativity for gamers of all stripes for years to come.”“We’re humbled by how quickly the community has taken to the creativity tools in Spore,” said Lucy Bradshaw, vice president of Maxis and Spore’s executive producer. “It’s amazing to see the sheer imagination represented in the hundreds of thousands of creatures, vehicles and buildings that have been uploaded around the clock since launch.”

Frain says that within most genres, all screenshots will look the same as other games in that same genre. "Some games do a good job with a unique look," he admits. "You see a screenshot of Bioshock, and you'd know it was Bioshock."Mirror's Edge has that, too, Frain believes. "And we were quite frugal with our assets. So we had a lot of people questioning, 'What is this game about?'"
All these swirling questions, Frain continues, generated a lot of interest. "If it's not interesting, then you can withhold whatever you want – no one's going to talk about it."
Apparently, the secret DLC is already playable, but isn't complete, the developer teasing that he has already been playing it and its looking rather good: "Yes! We're actually working on that, but I can't say what the content of those will be... but they're going to be f***ing cool.""We're thinking they're going to be pretty sweet actually. I actually played it yesterday... its really cool. We're still going to be working on it after the game ships; I played the prototypes yesterday. Its going to be really awesome," added the excited producer.
Nickel 'n' dime me, baby!
Save points can be found across the map, but they're thinly spread, and find yourself on the losing end of a gunfight and you could be pushed back to some thirty minutes beforehand. Without a checkpoint system to ease the passage between save points, the game can at times descend into a brutal slog. We've been assured that the final code will address these issues, and it's vital that it does as in the code we were witness to the fault was close to game-breaking.This gripe aside, Far Cry 2 is looking incredibly impressive. Bold in both scope and execution, our first few hours in the game suggested that this could be one of the most interesting and thought-provoking propositions amidst the tide of first class titles that are coming our way in the next few months. We'd even go as far to say that if the problems we came across are ironed out, Far Cry 2 could be this year's BioShock, and it shows signs of being as assured in its interweaving of design and narrative as Ken Levine's revered opus. A big claim, perhaps, but we're itching to get back to the jungle and see where Ubisoft take us next.
Bunch of big babies. Try playing an online OpFlash op for three hours before dying to a stray grenade thrown by your teammate.
"Our priority for all of our networks and businesses is growth,” says Turner's Animation, Young Adult & Kids Media president and COO Stuart Snyder, who has overseen Gametap. "Partnering with Metaboli significantly enhances GameTap’s growth prospects by leveraging our respective strengths... There’s upside here for everyone, but especially for gaming enthusiasts around the world.”Metaboli CEO Pierre Gaudet adds, "The addition of GameTap provides us a foothold in the U.S. market; valuable content and an established brand that integrate well with our existing operations; and a partner with whom we are honored to be in business.”
Metaboli intends to keep the GameTap brand going, so your games and subscriptions should be safe.
Upside: Activision's title will also be released on the PC.
The next project from Frictional Games is currently in full development. Following in the horror footsteps of the Penumbra Series, the game will have a lot to live up to. We are confident this will not be a problem as the game uses all new technology and ideas to become the most advanced, content filled and creative game from our studio to date.Set in the late 18th century the player will explore the eerie environments of an old castle. It's a journey through horrors and disturbing sights, built up during centuries of decay.
Electronic Arts, a leading maker of computer games, defrauds consumers through its "Spore" game, which "completely wipes their hard drive" and replaces it with an undisclosed program that prevents the computer from operating under some circumstances and disrupts hardware operations, a class action claims in Federal Court. The class claims that "Spore," a virtual reality simulation game, contains "a second, undisclosed program" called SecuROM, a "form of Digital Rights Management (DRM) for computer games."
Consumers are not warned about the program, which is installed without notice and cannot be uninstalled, even if the uninstall Spore, the complaint states. The secret SecuROM program is "secretly installed to the command and control center of the computer (Ring 0, or the Kernel), and surreptitiously operated, overseeing function and operation on the computer, preventing the computer from operating under certain circumstances and/or disrupting hardware operations," the complaint states.
Plaintiffs demand disgorgement of unjust profits and damages for trespass, interference, unfair competition and consumer law violations.
Today leading video game Publisher Lighthouse Interactive and accomplished developer Kerberos Productions, announced that A Murder of Crows, the latest expansion to their highly acclaimed 4X space strategy game Sword of the Stars (PC) franchise, has gone gold. Players are required to have either Sword of the Stars: Collector's Edition or Born of Blood to join in the action."This new expansion exemplifies Kerberos' continued commitment to the vast and dedicated SotS community," said Steve Wall, Vice President Business Development at Lighthouse Interactive. "Fans will revel in the dynamic new gameplay they're about to experience. For those new to the SotS universe, we encourage you to check out the teaser we released this week and visit the official website. This IS the game for space strategy fans, so you don't miss it!"
We are happy to support healthy exchanges on the forums. And people will only get banned for breaking the rules.Discussing DRM is not breaking the rules - and as long as it is a civil conversation, it's cool with us.
There's a thread about online accounts.
Please feel free to discuss DRM there - we'd like to keep this to a few posts so that people who are here to talk about the game don't have to sort through all the DRM posts. This thread will be locked - so feel free to post on the other thread.
Can you describe the health system? If a 50 cal round hits you, you vaporise, and your arms come off! So health system-wise, you're dead! There's no hiding behind something while a ticker goes up. We have something called a Catastrophic Body Damage System - but there's a purpose to it. When somebody gets hit by a bullet, it hurts, and it does catastrophic damage to the body.
Quite often you'll hear people talking about OFP2 almost as an anti-war game. The experience you come out of it with is an appreciation of what absolutely massive balls the guys in Afghanistan must have, because it's a frightening experience but also shows how horrific war is.
If you get hit by a small round, say like a 9mm or a 5.56, and you've got body armour on and you get a wound, you can be stabilised - but you might suffer. You might get a limp. But there's no healing you up to full health again. Once you're hurt, you're hurt for the rest of the mission, so there is value in not getting shot.
That's what drives that adrenaline rush. If you sprint across a street, you know if you take one round you could be a dead man. So I've got to get my guy to lay down suppressing fire to keep the enemy's head down, and then I'm going to rush across. And when you make it across and kick the door down and you're in cover again, there's much more of a sense of imminent danger at all times.
Yup, Project Redlime is in production. That is all we can say.
As for Darkness 2, it's not impossible but quite unlikely.
[The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on] Dark Athena is just about done. And the big boys are deciding who is going to publish it.That is all we can say for now.
The Dark Athena comment suggests that the Riddick revamp is another unfortunate casualty of Sierra's acquisition, though the likelihood of release by another publisher is high.

Today's question:
How long do you think you need to play a MMORPG before it's kosher to review?
SecuROM as been discussed and discussed so much and it causes arguments in threads. If you want to talk about DRM SecuROM then please use another fansite forum. If there is any change you will be able to read it on the official Spore site. Please do not continue to post theses thread or you account may be at risk of banning which in some cases would mean you would need to buy a new copy to play Spore.
Update: EA has reversed the crazy-ass rule.
“The decade-long groundswell of fan enthusiasm around Colonization was the driving force behind our decision to make a new version for today’s gamers,” said Sid Meier, director of creative development at Firaxis Games. “The terrific community support for the game, coupled with the opportunity to design a new edition using our Civilization IV engine, made it the right time to create this title for loyal fans and everyone else who loves great strategy games.”Colonization is a standalone game experience that adds an entirely new scenario to the ever-evolving world of Civilization. In Colonization, players lead one of four European nations on a quest to colonize and thrive in the New World. Players will be challenged to guide their people from the oppressive motherland, discover the New World, and negotiate, trade and fight as they acquire power and battle for their freedom and independence.
As a complete reimagining of the 1994 classic, Colonization is a total conversion of Civilization IV that combines Civilization’s addictive “just one more turn” gameplay with all-new graphics and features that add more depth to the franchise. New features, such as a brand-new interface, improved diplomacy options and the included modding tools ensure that Colonization is the next great title from gaming’s premier strategy game developer.
"We don't have PlayStation developers," Lombardi told us. Earlier in the interview, Newell discussed how Electronic Arts had handled the PS3 port of Orange Box rather than Valve internally. When asked whether or not EA would support the game by helping port the downloadable content over, Newell said, "They're not doing ongoing development on The Orange Box for the PS3."Newell also noted that not having a PS3 version of their upcoming zombie shooter Left 4 Dead was also partially due to EA. "We don't have the bandwidth," Newell said. "For The Orange Box, EA did the PS3 version. They're interested in getting a PS3 version done. We just have to figure out where the resources can come from. We don't have the bandwidth. We're doing the 360 and PC version ourselves." Newell did confirm that Valve would like to work on in-house PS3 development, but that this will only come "as our bandwidth allows us to."
As ever, much has been made of the narrative drive of the game, but to these English eyes, the drama consistently feels overblown, and, towards the end, really quite cringeworthy. We're supposed to feel for these guys, and for how invested they are in the decisions they make that cause the deaths of their comrades, but, in honesty, it just felt like Gearbox were trying too hard. Fair play for making an effort, but it really didn't add much to the game.Brothers In Arms: Hell's Highway represents little more than a solid evolution of the original, as opposed to being a game which takes strategic World War II gaming to dizzy new heights. With an engaging but ultimately repetitive play mechanic at its core, it's a game which deserves a decent amount of respect, but whose charms wane rather than grow as the game progresses. With little more than a rooftop sniper interlude and a trio of tank driving segments to break up the flow, Hell's Highway is short on surprises after the first few hours. It's by no means a failure, but simply lacks the inspiration to make it a must-have.
Chris Taylor, a game designer who was a part of the original Fallout game development team at Interplay in 1994, has rejoined the company. Taylor will serve as Lead System Designer for “Project V13,” the working title of Interplay’s next generation Massively Multiplayer Online Game (MMO) currently in development. Taylor joins other original Fallout team members on staff at Interplay’s internal game studio, which recently opened an office in Irvine, Calif. Additional development staff members continue to be hired as the project ramps-up.
We’re calling the game The Punisher: No Mercy because that’s exactly what it is – merciless. For the first time on consoles, you’ll see the Marvel Universe through a first-person perspective in some intense arena-based multiplayer action. Also, the game is being built from the ground up with some serious tech – yes, we are using the Unreal Engine 3 (the ultimate FPS engine) for this exclusive PSN release. Our main focus is to create an awesome online multiplayer experience with the style and grit from the Punisher’s world, complete with characters like Jigsaw, Bushwacker, Barracuda and even Silver Sable (been reading War Journal lately?…).

Microsoft today announced that the Xbox 360 has broken through the six million mark in Europe, thanks to strong momentum for the console across the region. A reduction in the estimated retail price (ERP) of the console last week has brought the entry-level ERP for Xbox 360 down to £129.99. This reduction plus an incredible line-up of games and exciting and broad entertainment offerings means Xbox 360 is the true home of mass market entertainment, with something to offer for every interest and budget.Chris Lewis, Vice President, Interactive Entertainment Business EMEA, said: “We’re very excited that more consumers in Europe are joining the ever-growing Xbox 360 community. We’re now the best-value next-gen console on the market with an entry-level ERP of £129.99, and consumers have clearly responded to that offering. We’re supporting this momentum by putting launch-level investment into a European advertising campaign, launching this week, which shows how Xbox 360 is changing the way consumers experience entertainment. With the New Xbox Experience on the horizon, and great titles like Lips®, Scene It?; You’re In The Movies, Fable 2, and more, there’s never been a better time to jump in to all that Xbox 360 offers.”
From last Friday 19th September, Xbox 360, which includes a 60GB hard drive and one wireless controller, has an ERP of £169.99. The Xbox 360 Elite, which comes with a massive 120GB hard drive enabling consumers to store huge quantities of content downloaded from Xbox LIVE® Marketplace as well as their own music, has an ERP of £229.99. The Xbox 360 Arcade console, perfect for those wishing to make their first foray into the gaming and entertainment world of Xbox, has an ERP of £129.99.
The price drop has set the stage for a record breaking holiday season, and the launch later this year of the New Xbox Experience, which will reinvent home entertainment from the inside out, with a bold new look and feel that is fun, social and simple to use. It’s the first time in history that a mass market consumer electronics device has been reinvented through software, changing the way we play games, watch movies, and enjoy great all-round entertainment.
Audiosurf, the puzzle racer that adapts and changes to the beat of your music, will be released by Ascaron in October 2008. Players cruise through futuristic tracks in a spaceship style racer, with the speed, shape and mood of each ride being dictated by the song playing. The music is chosen by the user as they decide between a calm, peaceful journey and an adrenaline fuelled rush. For £9.99, gaming and music fans alike are provided with endless playability as every track is unique, generated from the song chosen for that particular ride. Slower music creates a calmer, uphill ride, whilst fast and hectic songs will send the player speeding down a steep slope on a bumpy ride. The game supports all the major formats* including MP3 and music straight from iTunes.
The aim is to gain points, accumulated by racing through coloured blocks on different sections of the track. By collecting blocks of the same colour, a cluster is created and the blocks disappear, replaced by points on the scoreboard. Scores can be entered into online international leagues, setup for specific songs. The most popular songs include Knights of Cydonia, by Muse; Viva La Vida, by Coldplay; Propane Nightmares, by Pendulum and I Kissed a Girl, by Katy Perry.
Players can take control of 14 different characters, each with their own abilities. Some are able to jump over, move or drag blocks, whilst others operate two vehicles simultaneously, with the player in control of both. Extra variety is added to the gameplay through a range of power-ups and point gaining tactics, including clearing all blocks collected as the song finishes.
Audiosurf will be in retail in October 2008.
*File formats supported: MP3, iTunes, M4A, CD, OGG
Following the recent announcement that Microsoft-owned Age Of Empires creator Ensemble Studios would close after the completion of Halo Wars, Gamasutra has discovered that a now-canceled Halo MMO was in development at the studio, unearthing prototype UI and level screenshots of the Ensemble-developed project. The prototype art, which was at one point made available on an Ensemble-linked online artist portfolio website, further confirms previous rumors that the studio was working on an MMO based on the Bungie-created sci-fi franchise.

Today's question:
As far as patches are concerned, do you prefer smaller / more frequent downloads, or bigger / less common updates?
