As the ruler of Latveria, Victor Von Doom is one of the few villains in comics that is also a diplomat. A frequent opponent of the Fantastic Four and former friend of Reed Richards, Doom is one of the smartest men in the Marvel Universe –- second, perhaps, to Reed himself. Doom has also managed to conquer the world (in the 616 universe and alternate dimensions) several times, but ultimately has relinquished control for a variety of reasons.
Doom’s intellect has allowed him to create a variety of inventions from a time machine to machines that steal the Power Cosmic, but his greatest creation is his armor. Housing numerous gadgets and abilities, the armor has allowed Doom to take on even the most powerful of opponents. Clearly it is only Doom’s ego and arrogance that keeps Doom from achieving his goals. Doom is also incredibly gifted in sorcery, and has even bested Dr. Strange at times. It is interesting to note that Doom is technically not a Doctor –- he merely bestowed the title upon himself.
Doom exists in the Ultimate universe as Victor Van Damme. Although not nearly as accomplished as his alternate self, Van Damme still views himself as superior to Reed Richards. His armor is not created, but actually is a manifestation of the powers Van Damme received during the accident that resulted in the creation of the Ultimate Fantastic Four.
