Soupe Du Jour: Back To School (for you)
This next week, my children all return to another school year. I'm sure they are just about as excited to get back in school and they would be the night before Christmas (yeah, right). It is that time of year again. While many will dread it, you can't deny there is a little excitement about it.

I remember very vividly what the day I registered for my Senior year of High School. In those days, they had just upgraded from candles to electric light and were not yet used to the idea, and had so they had all the gym lights turned on with all the window shades pulled open with the sunshine streaming in as student after student registered. Registration at the time was just two weeks before school and while it had been only a couple months (June, July, August) it felt like it might have been a year or more and the mach had changed, not just with others but most importantly with myself.

That last year of High School was certainly different for me than any other school year. Perhaps because it was my last year of High School, or perhaps it was because I had matured considerably. Either way, I would soon be embarking on the next (and greatest thus far) steps of my personal development. Soon I was going to be attempting a career, gainful employment, perhaps even a family. There was so much wonder just ahead, and so much I still didn't know.

You have but one life to live, one time to be 17, just one time be a Senior, just one chance to be... you. Your future is ahead of you, and you may have an idea of what it may be, but always remember: Your future isn't written, no one's is. Your future is whatever you make it. So make it a good one.

3DPro USB Converter Now Compatible with PPro and FFPro!

An update on the current 3DPro USB converter run: thanks to some crazy finagling by Grendel, the unit is now capable of functioning with both the Microsoft Sidewinder Precision Pro and Force Feedback Pro gameport joysticks. If you're interested in ordering one, or would like more info, check out this DBB thread. (As a frequent user of one of Grendel's original units, I can personally vouch for how awesome they are.)

 Interview with Matt Toschlog!

Despite my previous eager statements, I've once again managed to fall massively behind on news and file updates. With any luck, I'll be able to rectify that over the past few days. As a way of making amends, I'm leading off this latest round of posts with a link to a real treat: an interview with Matt Toschlog, co-creator of the Descent series and former head of Parallax Software and Outrage Entertainment. The article covers everything from Mr. Toschlog's home life to his current ventures and views on the gaming industry. Special thanks to Jeffrey Lindblom of TechPersona.com for conducting the interview and bringing it to our attention!

 Massive level database update

Thanks to some much-needed prodding by Checkor, I've finally gotten around to attempting to purge my hard drive of a massive backlog of submitted levels. I've been sitting on some of these submissions for over a year, and I sincerely apologize to their authors. At any rate, without further ado, here are the submissions. Due to their number, I can't hope to post any sort of organized summaries for them here, so check out the included readme files for more info (or the individual level pages, for the D3 submissions):

Descent 1 Missions: (all by Bakdraft)
Bow Shock
Cyaegha
Magma Filter
Phasmata
Vorvadoss

Descent 2 Missions:
Cyanophage, by Bakdraft
Arugan, by K1M
X-Corridor, by Brambo

Descent 3 Missions:
Splinter, by Pyroiguana
Testboxen, by K1M
Robotech Arena 2, by Sapphire Wolf
Fuel Depot, by Nosferatu
C.O.D., by Duper
ReFactor, by WillyP

Other Files:
D3 Credits Music, ripped by Caius Kwok

There are still a few files lying around my hard drive, so if your submission wasn't posted above, it may appear over the next week or two. (Feel free to e-mail me about it, in any case.) Once again, I apologize for the massive delay; I promise I'll never let the backlog get anywhere near this large in the future.

 More new D2X-XL features

Not content with one set of cool features per week, Diedel has served up even more D2X-XL goodness. Along with increased debris lifetime, he's thrown in a lock indicator feature, to show which robots a homing missile will most likely target. For screenshots, check out this thread!

 New D2X-XL features!

Keeping the update train rolling, Diedel has announced two very cool new features for his D2X-XL project. The first is a fully-textured automap mode that can display robots, powerups, and even opponents' ships, all with full lighting effects; in Diedel's own words, it's practically a "spectator mode." In addition, the D2X-XL HUD now features a fully-functioning 3D radar. You can check out screenshots of the new features in this thread. Don't forget to grab the new version here!

 New poll! (finally...)

Believe it or not, the poll on the right-hand side of this page is not supposed to be a permanently static component of the site, even if has acted as such for the past several months. I think it's about time for a change, don't you? But before we get to that, here are the results from the previous poll:

You have received an invite to a LAN party, there will be games, noise, and people. Descent will of course be the main game played, but your kind host has asked you what you would perfer to eat at this party, how do you respond?

3 Fried Finger Foods (Quick, easy, and yummy)
32 Pizza (It's a classic)
14 Sub Sandwiches (Easy,non-greasy, and hey, its a sandwich)
7 Tacos (Yeah, the really really good ones, you know the ones im talking about)
4 Something else (Tell us what you would want in the forums?)

Moving on, the new poll is all about finding out how people go about getting their D2 fix. So, if you haven't completely forgotten its existence, head on over and vote!
