The San Jose Mercury News has an interview with Factor 5 President Julian Eggebrecht about its upcoming Playstation 3 game, Lair. In the Q&A;, Julian finds the time to call the Unreal Engine 3, a slow, corridor engine only. Thanks Beyond Unreal. Q: Some of the games all look good to me. This looks great. Is there a big difference you can see between this and Gears of War? A: In Gears of War there is no way you could actually go above the city and then basically go seamlessly from air to ground. Unreal Engine in the end just provides for corridor and corridor being more a metaphor here in terms of design. Our engine is always designed in a huge world bubble and that can be 32 kilometers by 32 kilometers. You can go anywhere at extreme speeds. Unreal Engine is dependent on the fact that you go relatively slowly through your world. With us, you can go through the world fast or slowly. If you are in night mode, or you are on the ground, you get all of the detail that Unreal Engine provides. But there is no way you can get the macro.

Lol wether it's true or not, calling out other engine don't seem to be very polite.

Fanboys can't handle the truth? GoW looks great if you have four people on screen in a narrow corridor. The Unreal engine has ALWAYS had that problem. It's the ancient rule of trade-off, and the same reason one-on-one fighting games always look amazing.

Well... I agree that Unreal 3 is probably slow / unoptimized. Newer games (just about any engine) take way too much resources vs. the eye candy "delivered". But if an engine is going to be a resource hog... it better reflect a good deal of Eye Candy for the reasons why... And while Unreal 3 Engine looks pretty good... I think Crysis looks better.

You design an engine for your needs. I think the Unreal engine is very good at what it's doing and have some of the best tools too. For very, very vast environements it's not the best but it wasn't design for that anyway.

I agree - UE always was a corridor renderer and it's pretty good at what it does. If you want to render really large seamless outdoor scenes, it is not what you want to use.

I'm not an Unreal fanboy, and I also think lair looks like shit.
Maybe the engine is really awesome, but they're certainly not showing it off with their horrible art design, and their boring and repetitive gameplay.
Drakan looked better and had better gameplay eight years ago. (Though I'd still only give that a 6/10. Lair looks more like a 4/10.)

32km x 32km is fine but but Lair doesnt allow you to walk around (just fly). It's all dragon riding and shooting down others...space invaders with dragons. Having seen the dev commentary and footage, it looks pretty but the gameplay is stuck in the 80s.

Why are you always starting shit Apache?
Better question is why are they always falling for it?
Read the WHOLE interview and not just that one paragraph! He wasn't trying to slam anyone (like some of you are fond of doing). The line of questioning was use of UE III in Lair. And it doesn't work because of it being a shooter engine and not built for flying games.
Some of you are in real need of sex or companionship or something.
If Apache can take away your Tender Vittles for one second and you guys flip out, I'd hate to see how you handle real life.
Or maybe this is real life for a few of you.

lair looks freaking amazing ive seen great videos and screens , its one of the few games i might fork over the 600 for
Gears of War is still a great game and just because certain games are slow or focus on smaller areas DOES NOT mean it cant be programed around a wide open fast paced game

Nonsense.
The original Unreal had the biggest, vastest levels indoor and outdoor of any game of it's time.
Other than comparing to Far Cry, Unreal engine still has very large open outdoor areas, renders them very well, and has always been known for it.
People are obviously confused with id and Quake/Doom engines, the definite corridor shooters.

There's one very impressive video of Lair where you fly around a huge city/landscape.
I'm just hoping that Lair's gameplay doesn't amount to the one in Rogue Squadron (timed missions with very forced objectives ).
Oh, and I'd hardly call this a corridor shooter engine

Wait! You are arguing that id engines don't have the reputation of corridor shooters...LOL
Believe what you want, but the point I am making is Unreal engine sure as hell isn't a corridor engine.
