BERJAYA SupCom Quad-Core Performance 01:28 am - Robert 'Apache' Howarth - hardware: General News BERJAYA (8 comments)
[H] whipped up an interesting article called SupCom & Intel Core 2 Quad Gameplay Advantages which takes a look at how game performance in Gas Powered Games' recently released RTS improves with multiple core CPUs. They even did a XP vs Vista comparison:
We were quite surprised at the level of disparity between Windows Vista and Windows XP performance in Supreme Commander. We initially began this evaluation with the intention of using Windows Vista solely. Windows Vista supposedly has better support handling multiple threads across multi-CPUs. This should benefit dual-core and quad-core usage in games that take advantage of multi-threading. After we performed our evaluation in Windows Vista, to be thorough, we decided to evulate Supreme Commander under Windows XP to make validate our results further.

What we discovered immediately was that performance was much faster under Windows XP. It was at the level where we could now run the game with higher in-game settings on dual and quad-core. It is quite clear as can be seen from our highest playable settings evaluation and our apples-to-apples tests that Windows XP is simply faster. However, the same pattern of core scaling emerged that we experienced under Windows Vista. Single-core was still unplayable, dual-core was much more playable, and quad-core delivered the best experience with noticeable improvements.

Looks like it's Quad-Core or bust for my next upgrade...

Check out our Supreme Commander review if ya missed it.

April 1st is creeping up on us... It falls on a Sunday this year, so shenanigans are bound to be limited.

Today's question:

What are the absolute worst game sequels you can think of? Any platform, or era.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. P.A.T.C.H. 10:33 pm - Robert 'Apache' Howarth - Games: Action BERJAYA (12 comments)
The in-game updater doodad isn't seeing it yet, but GSC Gameworld has released the 1.0001 Patch (US) for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Word is, it fixes / tweaks a whole heap of stuff, but it will break your current save games. So, if you don't mind starting over, give that sucker a whirl. Change notes here.

CNC3 Review at GSpot & IGN Video Review 07:37 pm - Robert 'Apache' Howarth - Games: Real-Time Strategy BERJAYA (3 comments)
GameSpot has the first online review of Command & Conquer 3, giving EA's latest and greatest a very respectable 9/10 score. The only downside they found was unfriendly base building. Snip:

Regardless of your history with Kane and his cohorts, Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars is one of the finest real-time strategy games in years. It's also a triumphant return to form for the series, because it's more than just a graphical update--it's an exciting, well-tuned experience with enough that's old and enough that's new to thrill old-timers and newcomers alike. Suffice it to say, you should play this game, and expect to be playing it for a long time to come.
Update - Here's PC.IGN's video review (8.5/10):

CNC3 Hardware Performance Guide 05:22 pm - Robert 'Apache' Howarth - Games: Real-Time Strategy BERJAYA (0 comments)
The girls over at GameSpot slapped up a Command & Conquer 3 hardware performance guide which includes some cool mouse-over comparison screenshots of the game. They also look at CPU and videocard performance, plus also system ram. They even include some older cards and CPUs as well.

CNC3 is capped at 30 frames per second, so it's pretty playable until it dips into the lower teens.

CNC 3 Ships to Stores 11:06 am - Robert 'Apache' Howarth - Games: Real-Time Strategy BERJAYA (10 comments)
EA announced that Command & Conquer 3 has shipped off to stores today, although it won't be put out for sale until the 28th.

"Command & Conquer is back!" said Mike Verdu, VP and Executive Producer at EALA. "We've taken the mix of explosive action, deep strategy, and rich storytelling that sparked a genre to the next level. Even better, the series is returning to its roots in the Tiberium universe. Players can take command of the futuristic armies of the Global Defense Initiative, fight for Kane and the Brotherhood of Nod, or control the alien hordes of our new third faction, the Scrin. I can't wait for people to get their hands on this game."

Fast and fluid gameplay, a breakthrough single player campaign, the ability to transform online battles into a spectator sport, next-generation graphics, and an epic story with full-motion video sequences featuring top Hollywood talent, mark the return of the critically-acclaimed Command & Conquer™ series.

Command & Conquer 3 Tiberium Wars features major Hollywood actors for its high-definition, live action video sequences from critically-acclaimed television series such as "LOST," "Battlestar Galactica," and "House," blockbuster films such as Star Wars The Empire Strikes Back and The Return of the Jedi (1980, 1983), Top Gun (1986), and Starship Troopers (1997). The unparalleled, diverse cast includes Tricia Helfer, Josh Holloway, Michael Ironside, Jennifer Morrison, Billy Dee Williams, and Grace Park.

"When I realized that I wasn't going to be a computer-generated character, but playing a live action role in the C&C; 3 game, I was really looking forward to see what was in store," said Tricia Helfer, famous for her role in the Scifi television series "Battlestar Galactica." "I can honestly say that it was one of the most fun projects I've worked on."

The actor who originated the main role of the maniacal leader of the Brotherhood of Nod in the Command & Conquer series, Joe Kucan, reprises his role as Kane in the game. Command & Conquer 3 Tiberium Wars also features real-life news reporters assuming the roles they know best—anchors and field reporters bringing the world the latest news on the third Tiberium War. These reporters pull from their everyday work to update the world on the devastating war and environmental catastrophes in the game's story.

Command & Conquer 3 Tiberium Wars is rated "T" (Teen) by the ESRB and has a US MSRP of $49.99. A special, numbered collector's edition shipped to stores nationwide today and has a US MSRP of $59.99. Video Card Performance with S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 10:47 am - Robert 'Apache' Howarth - Games: Action BERJAYA (7 comments)
Firing Squad shot up a feature called 3D Performance with S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Part 1: Mainstream Cards, which thankfully doesn't include 2D benchmarks (cough). It does, however, benchmark a number of popular DX9 (plus an 8800 GTS) videocards playing the game. Dynamic lighting really raped the lower end cards, so make sure to turn that off if you don't have the hardware to run it.

Play.tm has a quick Q&A; with Crytek designers Bernd Diemer and Dennis Schwarz to chat about Crysis.

Please tell us now before we get involved - is this going to be the first part of an epic trilogy, or a complete episode in itself?

The whole team is focused on finishing Crysis right now. We do have exciting plans for the Crysis franchise, but are not releasing any information right now.

It looks to be another fine week of new releases for the PC. First up, we have Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars. Then, we have The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion - Shivering Isles.

Today's question:

What platform do you think has had the best releases so far this year? PC, 360, Wii, PS3, or other...

P.S. Battlestar Galactica is silly.
