While passing is more exciting, a great running back can be critical to helping a team win championships. What makes a great running back in FOF 2007? Certainly it is easy to spot a great running back who has a very high overall ability and is great in everything. However, those backs are few and far between and they can be very expensive. Furthermore, a back who specializes in hole recognition and elusiveness can do well in FOF 2007, just as they did in the previous version. Today we look at another golden oldie thread, as we look back to some excellent RB skill analysis from FOF 2004 that I believe still applies (although maybe not completely) to FOF 2007:

A good game plan is critical for a team to maximize its success on the field. Skydog has arguably demonstrated the most successful offense in multiple MP leagues. Last week, he revealed some of the principles of the gameplan as well as the type of personnel that are needed to make it work. This thread is well worth checking out if you haven't, and hopefully we will have more gameplans in future weeks:

Building through the draft is so important in FOF 2k7, that I thought it was time to dedicate another column to it. There are many factors to evaluate when looking at a rookie: How big are his bars, what are his combine scores, what is his volatility, etc. Skydog wrote a great post that looked at how to evaluate these issues for FOF 2k4. Duckman and others have posted a thread which provides some updated numbers that will be useful to any drafting guru. The later thread is still a work in development, but both are well worth checking out.

Everyone knows that having a smart QB is important so that they know a variety of formations. Nogram did some nice analysis and shared his data on how a gameplan that utilizes each of the different base formations as well as a variety of pass distances can be more effective by avoiding defensive familiarity with the play call. Most veterans of the series will have already read today's highlighted thread, but there is a large influx of newer players to the series and the board, so I thought it was time to review an old thread that is still completely applicable to FOF 2007. From following how the best players build their teams in MP leagues, it is obvious that if you are playing with Chemistry turned on, it can have a significant effect. Of course, the goal is to build as many affinities as possible while having as few conflicts as possible. Doing this through trial and error can prove difficult. Quiksand put together a definitive post which reveals almost all of the information that anyone needs to build a team with great chemistry. Inspired by watching two of the greatest quarterbacks of this current generation, I knew that this week's column would focus on QB's in FOF 2007. There are many different philosophies of what you should look for in a QB. Most would agree, like real life, a great QB can make winning much easier. Certainly, if you are fortunate enough to find a QB who is excellent in every rating, you have an excellent chance at winning it all. However, those are few and far between. So, this week's thread is one that has had no posts in a few months, but has some good ideas on which ratings are most important in a QB.

This week I want to highlight two different threads that I've meant to highlight for a few weeks, but other things preempted me from doing so. The first thread is titled "Moderately useful AI Drafting Info." This includes a chart by Mhass that shows his collection of data on where the AI drafts players based on Adjusted Rating scores. Be forewarned, that I've seen some contradictions to the data such as QB's will sometimes go in the 2nd or 3rd round, or a great C will go in the 1st round. However, as a general guide or a building point for further study, I think there is some solid data to look at. He is the thread:

The second thread I've wanted to highlight is an excellent resource for the MP Coach whose career is about to begin. Skydog wrote great information on preference draft strategies. Ratings Hints From The Help Files
by SkyDog

From reading user's comments over the years, I'm convinced that one of the most underutilized information resources for FOF is the csv.txt file that is provided with the game. This file is ostensibly there to help put together a csv to create a player file. As a result, though, it gives information about what ratings mean, and sometimes with a bit more detail than is provided with the FrFoot2007.hlp file. My observation is that when the information from the two is combined, there's more information than one would think. So, here are 10 oft-misunderstood ratings, their explanations, and a few musings here and they about how they can be useful.

1. Passing Accuracy--The csv.txt file tells us that this is the "ability to connect with receivers in full stride, maximizing their ability to gain yardage after the catch." So, contrary to what some think, this mainly helps in maximizing YAC. It therefore follows that a QB with high Accuracy is best utilized with receivers who have high ratings in another misunderstood category....

2. Getting Downfield--Both RBs and WRs have this rating on their player card, and csv.txt file is once again most useful here, as it lets us know that this is the "ability to gain yardage after the catch." So, is that it? Are those two ratings the primary key to running a "West Coast" style offense? Not so fast, don't forget...

3. Pass Distance Ratings (Screen/Short/Medium/Long/Very Long)--Both the Help File and csv.txt tell us that these are the ability to complete passes at those distances. Don't get these confused with accuracy, getting downfield, or...

4. QB Style--The Help File explains this best: "Quarterbacks learn new formations during training camp. Generally, they tend to learn formations more relevant to their style of play before they learn other formations." In FOF2K4, it was definitely true that a QB who had a "Short Passing" style could be very effective throwing deep if his ratings and his receivers' ratings were appropriate for it. It just meant that he wouldn't always learn the deep-passing-oriented formations first. I've yet to see anything in FOF2K7 to indicate that this has changed. While we're talking about the passing game, let's not leave out this important rating...

5. Big-Play Receiving--A common mistake is to confuse this rating with "Getting Downfield," but once again, csv.txt leaves no room for misunderstanding. Big-Play receiving is the "ability to catch long and very-long passes."

6. Read Defense--Recently a bit of confusion regarding this rating emerged, with some thinking it has to do with recognizing the blitz, but the Help File really doesn't leave room for much confusion when it states that it is "their ability to read the opposing defense, which determines how effective they are avoiding double-coverage to throw to a secondary receiver."

7 & 8. Blocking and Pass-Rush Strength--These appear to work against one another. Both are listed in csv.txt as the "ability to handle physical defenders/linemen." The obvious assumption here is that these two ratings work directly against one another to generate the "so-and-so knocked so-and-so flat" message in the game log.

9. Adjust To Ball--This rating isn't mentioned in the .hlp file, but csv.txt tells us that it is the "ability to catch poorly thrown balls." It's difficult to know for certain, but my speculation is that it comes into play most often when a QB with a low rating in a particular pass depth throws a pass of that depth. In other words, if a QB's ability to complete medium passes is 20, and you want to throw a decent number of medium passes, you'd be wise to have receivers with good "Adjust To Ball" ratings.

10. Timing--Both the .hlp and the csv.txt files left many folks confused on these, but an explanation of this was provided by Solecismic customer support (http://fof.sportplanet.gamespy.com/forums/showthread.php?t=41855). The response was: "Timing is the ability to connect with a receiver who has deviated from his route, likely due to the defender leaving some opportunity available. It manifests with more varied completions to the primary receiver, so you'll see a higher percentage of longer gains, and perhaps some shorter ones as the receiver comes back to the ball. This is factored into every pass, to some extent. As always, experience will teach you more about its effects."

Acquiring players is important, but just as important is determining how long to keep players. When are they going to start to decline? When are they going to retire? I'm not aware of any definitive studies on this issue, and I've been running some tests over the last few weeks to try to come up with some answers. Of course, there is an element of randomness that is going to preclude any clear answer on any specific player. However, I'm attempting to further clarify some general assumptions I had and try to find some predictors of when a player may be about to retire.

So, I took a look at many universes over a 30 year history. I kept scouts of at least very good level for each of the specific positions I was looking at, and with those positions I randomly sampled 30 players at each position that were rated between 40-50 at their peak, another 30 at each position who were rated between 50-60 at their peak, another 30 at each position who were rated 60-70 at their peak. Finally, I looked at 30 from each position who were rated 70 and above at their peak. Over the next week, I'll be posting all of my findings in the thread that inspired me to look into this further which was Skydog's initial snapshot and specifics on retirement. Operations Sports FOF Review: 9 out of 10
[ Thursday 14-Dec-2006 10:41 AM EST ]
Operations Sports published an FOF2K7 review today, giving Solecismic Software's latest a 9 out of 10. Here's an excerpt:

"There are a number of new features in Front Office Football 2007, and all of them add to the games appeal. The biggest features in my opinion are the expanded game plans and depth charts, the expanded scouting combine and rookie interviews. The expanded depth chart permits you to do formation- and situation-based substitutions, which is something that was sorely missing from previous versions of the game. The draft is perhaps the most enjoyable part of the game. There is nothing like praying that the top player on your board falls to your pick or finding a sixth- or seventh-round jewel. The expanded scouting combine and rookie interviews provide you with more than enough information to make the right choice on draft day."

FOF 2007 models player retirement and decline in the latter years more accurately than any previous version. As a result, players are declining earlier and retiring earlier making the draft more essential than ever to building a successful team. Hence, in this week's coaches corner I wish to highlight a thread which is designed to be a centralized place for discussion of the rookie interview process. As most people know now, Solecismic added rookie interviews to this year's version. The rookie interviews are conducted during the first period of FA via the draft preview and clicking on specific potential draftees to access their card, then clicking on the interview button on their cards. The rookie interview thread is addressing such issues as who to interview and what the results actually mean - early results are counterintuitive as it may not be a good idea to draft an "underrated guy." The thread was just started recently and is developing but it is well worth reading to glean nuggets that can help build a successful team:

Interview With Jim Gindin At Gamenikki
[ Thursday 7-Dec-2006 03:57 AM EST ]
Jim Gindin, developer of Front Office Football 2007, consented to an interview with Gamenikki.com. An excerpt includes:

"With FOF 2007, the changes and additions seem to have a more visible role; the advent of red-flag players ("problem children," if you will), interviews and an actual combine bringing more depth to free agency and the draft, and height and weight playing a significant role with respect to player performance and development.

So the question is, what kind of balance between subtlety and visibility do you seek when making changes or adding new features? Has that approach changed at all in the last three years?

JG: Those aren't questions I ask during the planning phase. I have a notebook which contains dozens of features I'd like to add. When I start work on a new game, they're all on the list. The first thing I do is redesign the game's database based on these changes. That gives me a very good idea of how much development time each feature will require..."

Welcome to our Wednesday Weekly Feature: Face the Board.

Our first FTB participant would certainly be on FOFCs Mount Rushmore. QuikSand held for a long time the prestigious, or perhaps dubious, distinction of having posted more posts than anyone else. His posting efficiency, combined with his well honed intellect, gave rise to idea of QuikSand being a machine. His machine-like status is only one of several FOFC in-jokes that he is a part of, others include 2/3 and meathooks.

The range of questions that our posters came up with reflect Quiks ability to be just easily posting in a poker thread, crafting a puzzle, starting a discussion about pop culture, or writing a dynasty.

Multiplayer Highlight: The Conversion Process
[ Tuesday 5-Dec-2006 04:47 AM EST ]
As a new feature of FOFC, we'll be highlighting a different FOF multiplayer league every Tuesday. To kick things off, though, we're highlighting what many want to know about: the process of upgrading a multiplayer league from Front Office Football 2004 to Front Office Football 2007. Jim Gindin answered a few questions at our boards:

1. Is there a specific time when the conversion has to happen? Is it an end of season. I think this is important to know because some leagues may not want to wait 4-5 months to convert if they can do it, for example, just before the draft.
JG: Only right after the Front Office Bowl

2. How does it affect ratings? Will they convert the same, including under the hood stuff (like development, boom/bust stuff)?
JG: Core player ratings will remain unchanged, as will under the hood stuff. I didn't have to use random numbers for anything important in the converter, which is really the fairest way to do it.

3. How about injuries and salary cap? Will those transfer over same.
JG: Yes. Except the veteran minimum rule will apply immediately.

4.How will statistics be affected? I assume we won't see the new stats (like 3rd down or red zone stuff) for season that have already been played. But what about the basic stats we had in FOF2k4? Because FOF2k7 starts in 2006, will the stats built up since 2003 season convert over with the new game, or do we lose those?
JG: Any individual stat built up will convert. Any new stat will be shown as a 0 for past seasons. Team statistics will not convert at all, and will be shown as a 0 for past seasons.

5. Also, what about records and player honors? For example, will all records set before 2006 season be lost or will they be preserved?
JG: Records and awards tracked before the conversion will convert. New record categories will be kept starting in the new season.

Coaches' Corner
[ Monday 4-Dec-2006 02:15 AM EST ]
I was originally planning on highlighting the interesting draft analysis work that was being done, but Skydog already highlighted that in the "Thread of the Week." So, I want to focus on WR ratings today and what to look for in a WR and to clarify the various ratings.

Some of the ratings are obvious such as avoid drops. However, there is frequently confusion about "Getting Downfield" versus "Big Play Receiving." Quiksand says it best in the "WR's" thread: In FOF, "getting downfield" essentially measures a player's ability to get yards after the catch. "Big Play Receiving" on the other hand is important for deep balls, along with the "adjust to ball" attribute.

Route Running is another rating that is sometimes misunderstood. Route Running details how crisply a player runs their route which seems elementary enough. However, what the novice FOF player might not realize is that Route Running appears to be an important factor in how often a QB throws to that particular receiver. Based on anecdotal evidence, I don't believe the effect is quite as strong as FOF 2004, but this attribute still appears to strongly influence how often a receiver is thrown to. Of course, this means that you want your best receiver to have a high route running attribute. However, there are people who also believe that it is just as important that your weaker receivers don't have a high route running skill so they don't get too many passes thrown their way that would be better served going to your top receiver. This is a topic that has been discussed a few different times, but the most recent discussion on this topic can be found here:

Front Office Football Patch 6.0d Released!

  • Cosmetic fixes to the time remaining displayed in Solevision at the end of a quarter in rare circumstances.
  • The in-game scoreboard may stop displaying after certain player ejections as a result of an unsportsmanlike penalty.
  • If players retire early, only up to two additional seasons will count as lost cap room in the upcoming season.
  • About 5% of the injuries do not show up as referring to the proper body area in Solevision and in the game logs. The fix for this means that Solevision and logs for games saved prior to 6.0d will show most injuries as leg injuries. This will not affect the injuries themselves in any way.
  • Make it a little more clear in the interface for starting a new career that League IDs require 8 alpha-numeric characters.
  • Revise the Level Economic Playing Field option for starting new careers to default to off.
  • Knock down the players' expected bonus under Wall Street level.
  • Fix the potential for a program hang when dealing with major roster reconstruction (most likely with AI teams in multi-player prior to a team's first exhibition game) when depth charts are not filled.
  • Fix an exploit with using the previous and next buttons to access the player salary screen when a player card is being viewed in statistics mode.
  • Try and make the installation file handle the entire Add/Remove process on its own.

Thread Of The Week: DRAFT ANALYSIS
[ Thursday 30-Nov-2006 05:01 AM EST ]
Several FOFCers weigh in on what they've learned regarding drafting in FOF2007 in the "Draft Analysis Thread." There's lots of great information there to be sorted through, such as this comment from Narcizo

"So how do you go about getting the best players available in the draft? A problem with a lot of boomers is that their current ability is so low that you'll never be able to invest in them enough to get it to start pushing the potential upwards. You need to be able to discern the Roosevelt Bakers and the Dwight Colliers of the draft, players who actually deliver what you expect. It seems that players who are rated "As Scouted" are the best bet of actually delivering what they promise. They don't have the bust-potential of undervalued players while they don't have the woeful starting positions of the combine warriors."

Coaches' Corner
[ Monday 27-Nov-2006 01:32 AM EST ]
Every Monday, this column will provide some insight into an aspect of the game. This will include game planning tips, roster building tips, further explanation of ratings, and other things that will hopefully help both novice and experienced Front Office Football 2007 GMs. For the inaugural column, Id like to briefly comment on Albionmoonlights 4-3 Bump and Run Cover 2 Defense.

First of all, this post is noteworthy because the competitive nature of the many MP Leagues has limited game planning sharing in the past. Hopefully, this post will be the start of a trend of sharing knowledge. Secondly, this post is notable for the validity of the strategy. I personally tried this defense and it worked very well as long as I stuck to a key tenant of acquiring the right personnel to fit the scheme. Of course, this is important for any game plan. Without the right players that have the attributes to pull off a scheme, any game plan can fail as there are no unstoppable super tactics in Front Office Football 2007.

As Albionmoonlight points out, the quality of the defensive line is critical. A great defensive line can really shine in many schemes, but quality is very important in this scheme because they will be the source of almost all of the pressure on the quarterback. I also believe that safeties are critical; they must have a high zone coverage rating to really get the most out of this defense. Again, I'd like to offer kudos to Albionmoonlight for sharing this knowledge. This is a thread that any FOF player should check out:

Thread of The Week: FOF 2007 GROUPTHINK
[ Thursday 23-Nov-2006 05:26 AM EST ]
A number FOFCers are working together on a single player FOF2K7 career in the forum, and posting their early insights into the game. Both FOFC veterans and brand-new members are weighing in with their thoughts, such as this comment from new forum member adubroff:

"
If you have a scout who's excellent at young talent and excellent at a position and he tells you that a player is underrated by the masses, I would think that's a good player to take (in the sense that he'll have good blue bars, I don't believe that the scout is telling you anything about the player's ability to fill those bars). If the scout is bad at a position and he tells you that the player is overrated by the masses, most likely you should ignore him and listen to the masses...
