Taoyuan Nights shares his views on this years Taipei Game Show, Hellgate:London and even the smell of the Hellgate playtest area.
The highlight of the show, though, has to be the Hellgate London area. The game was a little uninspiring in terms of playability, but technically and graphically very interesting for me. Hell has taken over London and a band of rebels are fighting back using the tube network as their base of operations. The maps are automatically generated - a difficult problem for a 3D environment, so I was curious to see how that would play out.

There were, however, a few small flies in the ointment.
- The monsters were exhausted by 5pm and had gone to chill out on a sofa.
- The testplaying area well bits of it kind of smelled of err geek. And I dont mean the scrupulously clean kind of geek you find in a library who has been told by his mum to wash behind his ears. I mean the kind of geek who spends his clothes washing budget on an extra World of Warcraft subscription - yknow, just in case something happens to his main account
- The game isnt complete; you cant configure the controls. This may or not be a problem depending on what youre used to, in terms of an FPS. If you play with a non-inverted mouse y-axis, and WASD, then youll be in heaven. If you have no idea what I just said well, take a look anyway but dont be surprised if it seems a little confusing.
