AOE3 and WarChief Demo Download Counts 23:36 PST | Xiphoid | Print News | Mail News ES' Bruce Shelley has been quoted as saying that one of the biggest reasons gamers take the plunge to purchase a PC game is playing an enjoyable demo of that game. Judging from the numbers below, it looks like ES has driven a lot of sales off its demos. From three of the biggest download sites for gaming files (this doesn't even include the official download site from MS/ES), the Age of Empires III demo has well over 600,000 downloads and the WarChiefs demo has over 35,000. The overall numbers from all sites, including the official MS/ES one, are much higher, but this gives you a clue as to how popular demos are.

2) A pikeman counters cavalry. Is it implied that it also counters light cavalry? Does it work the same way for infantry?
A its different for different unit lines. As it happens a pikeman does counter light cavalry (assuming it can catch them). But light infantry defeat light cavalry & lose to heavy cavalry.
4) why is resource gathering in AOE3/TWC seem longer than AOE2?
A probably because villagers anre buildings generally cost less than in Age3 in the early ages. If you look at the length of a game youll see that over the course of an Age3 game, more resources are gathered over a shorter time than in Age2
5) Why were fish traps not included in AOE3/TWC?
A theyre not realistic if a school is fished out, its fished out whether you are using nets or traps. We did make whales infinite resources so that on most maps you shouldnt feel like you have to delete your fishing boats when the fish run out.
5) Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings (DS): Advance Wars on the DS was arguably the first really good DS game and worked a treat on the touch panel. Thankfully Age of Empires came along, borrowed several elements and added its own twist to the turn-based genre. The result is a fine title and one that turn-based fans should enjoy for many hours of civilisation building and destroying action.

2006 brought some other noteworthy additions to several long-running strategy series'. Age of Empires III burst onto the scene in the fall of 2005 and was well-received by fans of the series. Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle Earth and its sequel were also decent titles, if a bit overexposed. Neither of these games was particularly revolutionary, however. That honor goes to Company of Heroes, a stunning World War II RTS game from Relic. From the incredible graphics to the impressive AI to the simple joy of stomping Nazis, everything about the game is perfect. This is definitely one title from 2006 that is not to be missed.

PC strategy games come to DS
You'd think PC strategy games designed for 1280 by 1024-pixel resolution monitors wouldn't make an easy transition to the 160 by 240 pixel DS. But what do you know following on from the successful porting of medieval tactical battler Age of Empires to DS, an army of developers decided that the touchscreen / stylus combo was exactly what was required for a handheld port of their strategy games. And so EA is bringing us Sim City, Theme Park and probably even Spore, while Ubisoft will supply The Settlers, and Sid Meier promises the granddaddy Civilization. Well, just maybe.
