Mailbag - December Edition!

...So our plan to not update the IGN Cars Mailbag 'til 2008 has changed. Apparently every editorial director and boss here at IGN feels that these mail bags should be updated more than once every year and a half. So what this means is that we'll be reading and responding to your letters in a more timely fashion. Wait a minute... that sounds like work... (Shudder...) Oh well, as long as G-Block from IGN Gear keeps the office PBR flowin', we'll keep on workin'.

That's Not a Typo

"The standard engine gets a six-speed paddle shifter controlled CVT transmission"

How does this work? The whole point of a CVT is so that there is much larger range of gear ratios and there to not be any sort of "shift" in the tranny.

Also You have your pics reversed for the coupe and se-r.

Long time reader, dont let them take your site away :).

-Lil'Ray

That's not a typo. I'll have to double-check on the "number of gears" (the free booze at the SE-R reveal got to me a bit...), but in the words of Nissan USA:

"The Sentra SE-R is equipped exclusively with Nissan's Xtronic CVT™ (Continuously Variable Transmission) with steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters."

Yeah... I don't know how that's supposed to work, either.

What's That Car Called?

my quetion was that i saw on some program that mitsubishi makes a lancer with all the go fast goodies as the evo 8 but it looks like(or at least close to) a stock lancer. i was wandering if you've heard of it, what is it called, and where can i get more info about it(specifically how much it costs).

p.s. the new mustle cars (mustang, challenger) are f***ing awesome, and the new camaro is butt ugly but i wish ford offered the engine in the mustang. just my opinion

p.p.s. why dont mazda quit putting that sexy engine in the goofy looking rx8 and put it in a prettier car like the miata. call it the mazda miata rx

-thickshady

The car you are thinking of is the Lancer Evolution RS. It's basically a stripped-out EVO designed for track days. These cars don't even have a radio or air conditioning - unless you opt for the "urban performance" (or whatever it's called...) package. It starts at $29,149.

We like the way the new Camaro looks. See it in person - it looks a lot better in real-life.

Mazda doesn't put rotary engines into the MX-5 because... think about the "typical" people that buy MX-5s/Miatas. Do you really think those people would know how to maintain a REnisis? Ignored rotary engines like to blow up, you know.

You're Asking Us About Domestic Cars?!

i was wondering where did they get the door panels for the monte because i have a 74 nova and it remindes me of the monte carlo because the body is crap and the inside isnt the greatest either.I think those would look awsome on my car they look like they were custom made but i was also wondering if you know where i could get something like that done too thanks and hope to hear from you soon

-Galvan

While only the people at Universal know everything that went into the Fast and Furious: Tokyo Drift Monte Carlo, we think we may be able to help you out.

A lot of the exterior parts used on both the Monte Carlo and Mustang were sourced from Year One. Check 'em out at www.YearOne.com.

About Time You Guys Review a BMW!

About time you guys test-drive a BMW. I hope BMW sends you guys the new V8 E92 M3 so that you guys know how a REAL race car drives, instead of the boy-racers you guys are usually sent.

By the way, the 335i produces more torque than the outgoing E46 M3, but it is still behind in power by 33 horses.

-Chris V

more power then the outgoing m3? get the facts straight dude. outgoing m3 puts out 333 hp, but the new 3.0tt engine does have more torque. great article though.

-michael

Glad you guys liked the article. I hope BMW sends me the new M3 for review as well. I went back and revised the text to state that only the E92's torque number is higher. Why do this? So I can stop getting whiny emails like the one below...

I find this article disturbing. Not only is the "perfect" looks of the car compared to probably the worst possible picture of the mentioned super model, but when talking about the cars power/engine your reviewer mistakenly claims that the 335i's 300 horsepower/300lb/ft of torque numbers are higher than the outgoing M3. This is obviously not correct, as the outgoing M3 has 333HP. Why bother writing a review if your writers can't even get the easy details like specifications correct? I for one don't value opinions much of people who can't even get the most basic facts right.

-Christopher M

Huh? "Disturbing"? That's a new one... For what it's worth, our specifications are correct. What part of 300 horsepower and 300 lb.-ft. of torque did we get wrong? Try this "theory" on for size: if Engine "A" produces considerably more torque than Engine "B", Engine "A" can be (and sometimes is) considered the more powerful of the two. Torque is just as important (if not more so - depending on the application) as horsepower.

You don't have to value our opinion - that's fine. I certainly won't be losing any sleep over it. Just be aware that I have the freedom to not value the opinion of someone that thinks Giselle looks bad in this picture.
