Jack Bauer's daughter and wife are kidnapped by the same people trying to kill presidential candidate David Palmer, who could be the first African-American president in history. A mole inside CTU is then exposed, but doesn't provide any information that could help the investigation. Jack then finds himself in a tough situation, as the terrorists have his family hostage, so Jack is forced to do what they want. When it is revealed that the man behind his family's kidnapping is somebody from his past, Jack must do everything he can to keep not only his family, but the country safe.
Season 2 starts with Jack Bauer dealing with the death of his wife, and the estrangement of his daughter Kim. Although no longer working CTU, Jack is still depended on by the new President, David Palmer. Not able to stay away from his line of work for too long Jack is brought back on to figure out who is threatening to detonate a nuclear device in Los Angeles. Meanwhile, a subplot develops around a wedding party, with a possible terrorist as a groom.
At the beginning of season 3 Jack has returned from a deep undercover assignment, infiltrating a drug ring, which has ties to terrorism. At the same time, a van drops off a dead body infected with a bio-weapon at the National Health Services. Jack's new partner at CTU is Chase Edmunds, a young and successful agent, who happens to be dating CTU's most recent hire, Kim Bauer. Now it is up to Jack and Chase to stop the terrorists responsible for the virus, and destroy all specimens before it is released. All along Jack is dealing with a drug addiction that he developed over the course of his previous undercover assignment.
In a change of venue Jack Bauer now works in Washington D.C. for the Secretary of Defense, while having a relationship with the Secretary's daughter, Audrey Raines. CTU has it's hands full with a terrorist cell operating inside the United States controlling the nuclear override, a device that can cause meltdowns at every nuclear plant in America. In order to stop the growing terrorist threat, CTU rehires Jack as a field agent. The threat continues to elevate when the terrorists come in possession of a nuclear warhead. Now it is up to Jack Bauer to make sure that the nuclear warheads are not used on American soil.
Jack Bauer has been laying low after faking his death at the end of season 4. But he is brought back into the fold when his friends and former co-workers are mysteriously murdered. Seeing a pattern, all those targeted knew that Jack was still alive. While trying to uncover the culprits, Jack discovers a terrorist plot to acquire nerve gas. Meanwhile, the U.S. and Russian presidents prepare to sign a treaty, while the first lady attempts to unravel a conspiracy stretching deep within her husband's administration.
