Up on IGN is a short interview with Crytek's CEO-stroke-President, Cevat Yerli, that focuses entirely on the DirectX10 features of Crysis:
IGN: If I wanted to run Crysis at, say, a solid 30 frames per second, what kind of system are people going to need?
Cevat Yerli: We learned a valuable lesson in Far Cry and that is to give people what they want but to also give them the ability to choose how to run it. For Far Cry, we gave the user a host of options that allowed them to cater to the experience they wanted. Some people like to see no popping, but they could care less for shadows, while others may not care about cool clouds but want more detailed textures. To support this we are going to offer even more ways for players to fine tune their experience. Personally, I would say to run Crysis with high settings; you need a machine that has a card that was made in the last six months. Our goal though is to make it really playable and look good on machines two-years-old from our ship date.
As part of the interview there's a DX10 flyby video available to download or stream here.

I just cannot put my finger on why these appear so familiar:
Developer Edge of Reality has released the first set of screenshots for its upcoming PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 title - Cipher Complex - set for release late 2007/early 2008. It is best categorized as Aggressive Infiltration: a new breed of military stealth game.
The basics:
Next generation military stealth genre gets a brutal, high-energy combat boost. Deadly assassinations and vicious adrenaline driven attacks take the ordinarily slow paced stealth genre to new levels of action and tension.
The player takes tactical control of the flow of time in the game through adrenaline powered mechanics; moments where the player moves so fast that time stands still. Powerful dashing attacks are unleashed in the blink of an eye, faster than the enemy can respond, and adrenaline powered attacks knock enemies flying with devastatingly effective sweeps of the player's combat knife.
When a decommissioned Russian missile complex off the unforgiving coast of Siberia is assaulted by a mysterious militant faction and subsequent diplomatic inquires to Russia fail, Cipher is sent in to investigate. And so the crisis begins.

Epic Considers Automatching For UT2007 PC Servers 12:08 pm

Epic's Steve Polge jumped on the Unreal Tournament 2004 server admin mailing list earlier today to guage reaction to a possible automatching feature that could be added to Unreal Tournament 2007:
We want stats and player ranking to be a more important part of the next UT. Particularly, we want to be able to use player ranking to help players find servers which match their skill level, to avoid the issues with wide skill disparities you often see in UT2K4 pub servers. However, it's easy to game the rankings if you control the server.
What alternatives to EA's approach can you suggest? We know our admin community is important to the success of UT, and we don't want to do anything to shut any of you out. In any case, it's quite possible to game the rankings even without controlling the server, if the players band together.
Personally, as a long-time UT player, I'd like to see a separate ranked mode of play for automatching, and then a standard unranked system for playing with friends, though I wouldn't mind an additional search filter for the unranked stuff that would show me where to find players of similar skill based on their ranked match rank. How about you?

Good news for people who use VGA cables and a 4:3 display to play Gears of War, Epic is fixing the squished ratio problem the game currently has for people without a widescreen lcd (thanks EA): Good news folks. We think we've fixed the VGA aspect ratio issue. This still has to go through testing and then certification but provided we didn't mess anything else up by making this fix it should be in the next update. I can't predict when this update will be released because we're still working on a few other things for the update and, as I said earlier, it needs to go through the cert process. As soon as we have a good idea when that will be, and what ended up making it into this update, we'll publish some information about it on this forum.
I would also like to apologize to our VGA cable non-widescreen users that we didn't catch this before the game came out. We used VGA cables quite extensively to drive HD resolution LCD monitors but the monitors we used in-house were widescreen models which, as you probably already know, were not affected by this.
We've added a non-widescreen monitor to our in-house test lab and we'll be sure to test all future Xbox360 releases on that monitor.

Microsoft's showing a Halo 3 TV advert or some such next week, so of course we have to post the news:
Microsoft Game Studios and Bungie Studios today unveiled more details on the worldwide debut of a new Halo 3 teaser ad. The ad will be aired on Xbox.com in Europe around 02.15 GMT on Tuesday 5th December. Gamers can experience Master Chief as they have never seen him before during the 60 second ad.
The ad will air in North America during ESPN Monday Night Football on the 4th December and for the first time ever, will be simultaneously aired in Europe on Xbox.com. Everyone in the UK will get another chance to see the ad on TV, when it airs on Channel 4 on Friday 15th December at 22.45.
The ad, created by advertising agency McCann Erickson, will provide viewers with a unique and compelling look at Master Chief and the world of "Halo 3." It is easily one of the most anticipated ads of the year. It underscores the innovative approach and driving influence the "Halo" franchise has commanded. The ad will also be available for download exclusively for Xbox 360 users via Xbox Live Marketplace.

Somewhat more related to the day to day purview of the site is news that the Halo 3 test isn't going to be an open-for-all event, and at present it's only happening in North America:
In conjunction with the ad, Microsoft today unveiled further details and an official call to entry for the "Halo 3" beta program. Beginning Monday, Dec. 4, by visiting http://www.halo3.com, gamers in North America will be able to register for the opportunity to be one of the select members to join the unprecedented "Halo 3" public beta program, scheduled to kick off in spring 2007. Today's announcement confirms the first path of entry for gamers to participate in the beta program and be among the first to experience the most anticipated game of 2007.
The Xbox Live multiplayer public beta, which is a pre-release version of the multiplayer experience of "Halo 3," is scheduled for availability in spring 2007 exclusively on Xbox 360. This beta also represents an opportunity for gamers to participate in the development of "Halo 3." Through the resulting feedback, Bungie Studios will be able to further refine and hone the end result of "Halo 3."

Finally got around to playing a bit of Roboblitz yesterday. The game took forever to install, but it's pretty interesting. The mouse movement was super laggy so I used a gamepad. I'm not sure I'm going to play enough to actually review it, but it's kind of neat in a nerdy way.
Today's question:
What's the last PC game you used something other than your mouse/keyboard for control?
