Ranked UT2007 Servers? ��

The UT2004 servers mailing list has erupted in conversation as spurred on by Epic�s Steve Polge response to a conversation. Steve is seeking suggestions for a ranked servers and players system for UT2007. Here�s the original email:
I'd be interested in more thoughts from the server admin community on this. We want stats and player ranking to be a more important part of the next UT. Particularly, we want to be able to use player ranking to help players find servers which match their skill level, to avoid the issues with wide skill disparities you often see in UT2K4 pub servers. However, it's easy to game the rankings if you control the server.

What alternatives to EA's approach can you suggest? We know our admin community is important to the success of UT, and we don't want to do anything to shut any of you out. In any case, it's quite possible to game the rankings even without controlling the server, if the players band together.

Their website is host to a number of new models and screen shots showing their progress over the last year with the promise of more media in the coming month. Most of hte screenshots that you've previously only have been able to see in various magazines can now be found in a high-resolution on Bungie's screenshot page. You can also find a dissection of the same screenshots while you are visiting Bnet. If you want to be sure to have that extra little information about each maps layout once the game is released this is definately something you should take the time to read.

A lengthy interview with Epic�s Jeff Morris has appeared at the OC Gamer website. The interview concerns itself specifically with the vehicles of UT2007. There�s a lot of awesome info, and it�s nice to (finally) see some UT2007 goodies! Here's an excerpt:
PCG: How do you think UT diehards will feel about all the new machines in their midst?

JM: By far, the favorite feature of 2K4 was Onslaught, and its big feature was the vehicles, so we definitely felt the lessons we learned about how to make maps for vehicles in Onslaught would allow us to make really good maps this time around, because we learned a lot of the hard lessons before. At the same time, you look at other games out there and there aren�t a lot of pure deathmatch or CTF games out there anymore. We definitely want to be the premiere CTF, on-foot, deathmatch skill kind of game.

Left 4 Dead ��

Turtle Rock Studios and Valve today announce Left 4 Dead, a co-operative multiplayer action game from the makers of Counter-Strike.

"By leveraging its industry-leading AI technology and years of Counter-Strike development experience, Turtle Rock is building upon the elements that make Counter-Strike successful and applying them to Left 4 Dead," said Gabe Newell, co-founder and president of Valve. "What Counter-Strike did for multiplayer action games, Left 4 Dead will do for co-op games."

Left 4 Dead is built atop the most advanced version of the Source Engine and introduces version 2 of Turtle Rock's artificial intelligence (A.I.) technology.

Left 4 Dead will debut on the PC in 2007. More information is available upon request.

Yeah, I know. AvP2 gets so old, it could put a coke addict to sleep in the middle of a bender. So when the first screenshot came out for the Aliens Half-Life 2 mod, it's like a new addiction -- the "new coke," it's come!

This little black Alien, it passes the test. Any more screenshots, man? Just one? Okay, cool - only started last month.

Looks like there's help wanted.
"We are currently looking for a lead programmer experienced in Half-Life 2 willing to spend a few hours a week implementing new features - must be over 18. If you're interested in the placement, please send an email with reference!"

NASA Using UE3 ��

Ivan and his friend Multy The Core have kindly pointed out that NASA is using Unreal Engine 3 to create a �science-based synthetic world�. There are plenty of details concerning the project available in an article at KnowProSE.com, as with in this excerpt:
The general idea is that NASA's Learning Technologies Office got a small amount of funding to start a prototype NASA-based game. They are now working with the America's Army development team and the Federation of American Scientists to make a short(10 to 20 minutes) prototype. They are using the Unreal 3 engine from Epic, so they're hoping for commercial quality results.

The prototype is expected to be an introduction to NASA's Vision for Space Exploration - apparently, NASA is planning to head back to the moon by 2020, and by 2035, a human on Mars is planned.

Jurassic Rage: Evolution 1 Released ��

The first public release of the Jurassic Rage mod, dubbed Evolution 1, has been released! This mod offers plenty of dinosaurs, guns, and coop-like action for you to exploit. A couple of screenshots and some excerpts from their about page provide you with some additional details below. You can visit their site for more info, along with download links.
Jurassic Rage is an episodic, team-based, dinosaur infested modification for Unreal Tournament 2004. We are undertaking the challenge to incorporate fun gameplay with a realistic world and an evolving storyline into one well-tested and balanced package released every 30 days.

Jurassic Rage merges single-player and multiplayer. We have multiplayer gametypes that can be played like missions in a single player game, except that you can play them on any map that supports it, not just one. They are entrenched in the Jurassic Rage storyline, can be played both offline and online with, versus or without bots and real players. Evolution I contains the first "mission", next evolutions will contain more. Eventually you will be able to play the gametypes just like missions in a single player campaign, advancing from one to another.
