August 18, 2006 - It's odd to see the number one JDM DVD magazine focus on things other than hot Japanese cars, especially when the DVD in question is called Best Motoring: Japan vs. USA Drift Off. Yes, there is drifting in this DVD, and yes it features Keiichi "Drift King" Tsuchiya, Yasuyuki "Waku-Waku San" Kazama and Kazumi "Our Future Wife" Kondo. But that's about as JDM as it gets, as BMI: Japan vs. USA Drift Battle spends most of its time focusing on foreign drivers and cars.

The DVD kicks off with the Japan vs. USA drift battle between Kazama and U.S. drivers Rhys Millen and Ken Gushi. This battle has a bit of a twist, though... Instead of letting these three drivers go head-to-head in their personal, fully "dialed-in" D1 cars, they all have to take turns drifting a stock Mazda MX-5. The MX-5 is designed to grip, so sliding it around proves to be very difficult for these world-class drivers.

Speaking of roadsters, BMI also does a head-to-head comparison between the MX-5 and the new Pontiac Solstice. Tsuchiya thoroughly explains the strengths and weaknesses of both cars, though he does give a slight nod to the Solstice. We're not exactly giving anything away by saying that the Drift King likes the Solstice a little more than the MX-5, but hearing him explain why the Solstice is superior is entertaining and informative. We're sure that his comments will have bench/internet racers debating the merits of both cars for quite some time.

BMI really delivers the goods in its "main" segment, which is sure to be a Euro-lover's dream. After a brief introduction to the world of high tech materials (such as carbon fiber), BMI gives us a brief driving impression of the Porsche 911 Carrera S and the BMW M3 CSL. This segment really gets good when it spends the remainder of its time focusing on the BMW M5 sedan. The BMI crew really delves into what makes the M5 so special, and this tech/driving impression segment doesn't drag as much as the tech segments in other BMI videos do -- things are short and sweet here, just how we like 'em.

Of course, after the in-depth tech segment, the BMI crew decides to race the M5 against some extremely super machines. And we're talking about cars that put the "super" in "supercar". In addition to driving against the aforementioned M3 CSL and 911 Carrera S, the M5 sedan must also compete with the Lamborghini Gallardo and NISMO R34 Z-Tune. Yes, BMI actually put a hopped-up sedan and a Lamborghini against each other on a track. How does the M5 fare? You'll have to see it for yourself, but we'll be so bold as to say that this race will give excited supercar fans much to talk about for years to come.

Best Motoring International: Japan vs. USA Drift Off wraps things up with the bonus "Life in the Fast Lane" segment, which focuses on Manabu Orido and Nobuteru Taniguchi's experience at GT Live. If you couldn't make the event yourself, this segment is a good way to check out what you missed.

As usual, we recommend this DVD to any and all car fans. It's not as "JDM" as the rest of the BMI or JDM Option DVDs -- the focus on American drivers and European luxury cars make this BMI disc seem to be the most "international" yet. Even the cover only features the Toyo drift Mustang and the M5. This disc finally puts the "international" in "Best Motoring International. Check it out if you like cars.
