LANParty.com - Hosting 101 Starts
I'm pleased to announce that we have just started a new column here on LANParty.com. We've been doing lots of house-cleaning on the back-end of the site that should make things a little nicer. Today, we have the first of the improvements to the site: Hosting101. Hosting 101 will usually appear on Wednesdays and is a column devoted to the non-exact-science of hosting a LANParty. I hope you enjoy it! Want the full low-down on what Hosting101 is about? See the introductory Hosting101 column. -Mickey KnoxFriday, October 20, 2006
Many of us have been to them, some of us have thrown them... Halloween is one of the perfect times for a LANParty. Even though Halloween is mid-week this year, a halloween themed LANParty is a great way to start adding atmosphere to an otherwise plain-jane lanparty routine. If you have a tip on what you've liked or disliked about halloween LANParties of yore... send it in to me and we'll compile it all for an upcoming article that we're working on. LANParty on Uncle Fester! -Mickey KnoxTuesday, October 17, 2006
Point of Existence 1.1.5 Patch
The team who has been hard at work on the Battlefield 2 mod, Point of Existence, have cranked out a client patch. This update takes the mod to version 1.1.5.
If you have not yet tried this mod, then first grab the v1.0 WINDOWS CLIENT. It is just over an entire gigabyte, however it is worth it! The mod takes place in the not too distant future and pits Ukrainian and German troops against one another.
There are plenty of cool vehicles to operate. Tanks offer different ammo choice, planes have air to air and air to ground weapons, and the Euro Tiger chopper is just devastating. However, where I think this mod really shines is with the infantry. One of the best maps in this game is Fallen, a lush forest full of tress, brush, and grass. The infantry only battles on this level are hardcore!
Well enough reading, start your
DOWNLOAD of the 1.1.5 patch!

Diagnosing computer trouble
One of the things that I spend a bunch of time doing here at LANParty.com is helping folks to figure out what is going wrong with their computers or networks as the prepare for a LANParty. For computer diagnosis, I have found a very nice round-up of things to consider when facing a machine that isn't doing what it's supposed to do (playing games, of course!). Check out Computer Technicians 104: Making Computer Diagnoses on Technibble. While I realize that many of you are not computer technicians by trade, you are by virtue of the fact that you own a computer. It's a good read with a steady stream of good suggestions on the step-by-step process of diagnosing a computer problem. -Mickey KnoxMonday, October 16, 2006
Opinion on the future of AMD
It's clearly been a wild ride to the top and back down for AMD in the past few years. They have gone from an also-ran to holding the performance crown. The question now, what happens now that AMD has lost the performance crown? Are they destined for the supply closet or the prime workstation spots? Check out the opinion piece on Hexus.net entitled Is AMD really f&$@d?. It's a decent read. -Mickey KnoxWednesday, October 11, 2006
NVIDIA hosts GeForceLAN 3!
Ahem... and I quote:
You may have been to a NVIDIA sponsored LANParty before, but have you ever been to a LAN Party thrown by NVIDIA? In just under 30 days NVIDIA will be hosting the two-day GeForce LAN 3 in the San Francisco Bay Area (California, USA). What is unique to this LAN Party is that you can witness the launch of NVIDIAs next generation platform (GPU and MCP together). NVIDIA knows how to run a LAN Party and has recruited the guys from PDXLAN to run the event with a Company of Heroes tournament, Battlefield 2142 tournament, tons of fun contests like tug-o-war, Mountain Dew chugging, case mod, dodge ball, and free food and drinks on top of the launch party itself. The event will be held on November 7th and 8th to coincide with the launch of the next generation graphics card from NVIDIA. The cost? Just $30.00
Yummy. -Mickey KnoxMonday, October 2, 2006
Far Cry v1.4 Patch Coming
According to gamershell.com a FarCary v1.4 final patch will be forthcoming from ubisoft. Keep your fileplanet watch on... and get ready to rock. -Mickey KnoxThursday, September 28, 2006
Nick from SPLAT, a LANParty in Colorado Springs, Colorado (USA) sent word of the LANParty that they held the first weekend of September. From his account of the SPLAT LANParty, it sounds like it was a blast. We'll be featuring some of the pictures from this event this week. If you have pictures that you'd like to share with the LANParty community, send them our way as an attachment or as a link to your online photo gallery to news@lanparty.com.

Review: Satellite Pro P100 - desktop replacement?
From the review, it looks like the Toshiba Satellite Pro P100 could be a desktop replacement for various multi-media tasks, but falls short on gaming:
...this laptop will easily handle all business applications and will even handle many of the older games... but please note you may need to upgrade to a 'gamer-centric' model...
It's still an interesting review of the Toshiba Satellite Pro P100 -Mickey KnoxSunday, September 24, 2006
Need extra portable space?
One of the major problems at a LANParty is that there are a number of files to be transferred. I'm referring to patches, mods, skins and such. You might be referring to other things. At the price of network performance, you can just use a network share, however, when you're talking about gigs of data... it's better to have some sort of alternative. A USB2.0 adapted hard drive could do just the trick. ThinkComputers.org has a nice review up about an adapter from Vantec that allows you to connect a SATA or IDE drive to a system via USB 2.0. Check out the ThinkComputers.org review of the Vantec SATA/IDE to USB 2.0 Adapter. -Mickey KnoxFriday, September 22, 2006
Review: Sennheiser HD 201 headphones
Maesschalck puts out a nice review of a decent pair of headphones. Suitable for competitive gaming (tournaments?) or just enough to get some sound at a LANParty? Check out their review of the Sennheiser HD 201 headphones. I received the HD 201 a few days later and put it on. The Sennheiser HD 201 feels pretty comfortable for a headphone of this price class. The HD 201 has closed cans and I can wear them multiple hours without a problem. They feel pretty light on my head and I don't get the feeling that my head is trapped between two clamps.

Hey everyone! September is always an interesting month for us. There is a unique mix. Summer is over... the hail of the "new-game-christmas-rush" is near... folks are heading back to college.
... and the leaves... There's one thing that is consistent with all of it though... and that's change. Here at LANParty.com, we have things in the works that will hopefully have us changing like the leaves this month.
So, as we get ready to make some changes, what do you want to see change? Send your suggestions to Mickey@LANParty.com! -Mickey KnoxFriday, August 11, 2006
Wow... talk about a blast from the past... this is one of those things that you think about for years and then it just disappears from the radar screen.
It seems that ENlight has designed an LCD PC chassis. The actual PC is mounted in the panel housing. The best part? It's an open box still. You can swap out components. Check out the article on the ENlight LP791 LCD PC chassis from HEXUS.net. -Mickey KnoxThursday, August 10, 2006
The TechZone has an article about communicating with your date via IM on your notebook instead of chatting face to face.
I'm curious if any of you out there are Couple-LANPartiers? My wife and I went to a few LANParties together. What about you? Let me know about your experience with a significant other (boyfriend/girlfriend/wife/husband) at a LANParty.
While you're thinking about it, check out the TechZone article about Couple-surfing. -Mickey Knox
