On Election Eve, Senate Race is Neck-and-Neck Six months ago, no one would have predicted the race for the U.S. Senate in Virginia would be competitive. Republican incumbent George Allen seemed a shoe-in, more focused on a potential presidential election bid next year than this month’s election. |

A “glitch” has turned up on about 1,500 City of Falls Church delinquent personal property tax notice sent out from the Treasurer’s Office at City Hall to citizens last week, the F.C. City Council learned at its work session Monday night. For everyone past due with their so-called “car tax” payment, they were assessed not only a 10% late payment penalty, but another $20 for a “collection fee.” |

Last summer the Commonwealth of Virginia began work on a state Energy Plan in response to legislation adopted in the 2006 General Assembly session. Now it would be nice to think this plan was developed in response to the looming threat of peak oil, but sadly this is not the case. |

Democratic contender James Webb is on the verge of one of the great political upsets in the history of Virginia. As we move to the election on Tuesday, polls continue to show him with a thin but perceptible lead over incumbent U.S. Senator George Allen in a race that has attracted a huge amount of national attention. Former military hero and Secretary of the Navy under a Republican administration, James Webb lifted himself out of comfortable obscurity earlier this year to run his first ever campaign for public office. |

Has anyone not noticed there is an election on Tuesday? Every day brings some new revelation about campaigns, candidates, or suspected cover-ups, and it’s easy to gloat, or be cynical, depending on your perspective. Election handicappers tell us that 2006 is a watershed year, a mid-term election that has a high probability to upset the balance of power in Congress, not unlike the elections of 1946, 1974, and 1994. The hard part, though, comes after the election when the campaigns are over and the winning party has to learn to govern. |

October has already been the third most deadly month for American troops in Iraq. Since the invasion, 2,814 brave soldiers have lost their lives. Sectarian violence between warring Iraqi factions is spilling out from urban centers into more rural communities. Innocent civilians are caught in the crossfire because there is little or no control over the violent militias. |

 | | Lou Jones | Inside of Lou Jones’s Falls Church home, her art engulfs you. There is her eccentrically shaped green cactus, whose branches twist in all sorts of directions. Then there is an enticing framed painting — a navy blue background, dotted by tiny, colorful oval that ran across the five-by-six foot piece. |

At the end of the summer, NBC appeared primed for a ratings resurgence behind a slew of high-profile new shows, many of them receiving sparkling reviews from critics. However, a month and a half into the fall season, viewers are still low and the clock has already expired on a character that could have been the next Jack Bauer. Now it looks like the Peacock is set to send the revered Aaron Sorkin packing. Now it’s up to a nerdy Asian kid and his gang of super friends to save NBC’s new prime-time offerings before the network converts to inexpensive reality shows hosted by the likes of Howie Mandel and Bob Saget. But is “Deal or No Deal” really the best show NBC has to offer? Here’s a look at what needs saving and what needs changing among the network’s latest offerings. |

 | | Matthew Ryan | Matthew Ryan is an idealist, a fact that may surprise those familiar with his work. Never mind that his albums are laden with ballads, or that he sings like he sports a leg iron from his right ankle, or even that he openly says he has never written a “feel good” album. Matthew Ryan is a dreamer. |

 | | ARLENE MARQUARDT IS ALL SMILES at the start of last Sunday's Marine Corps Marathon. She walked the course with her daughter, Jen (center), and Jen's boyfriend, Paul Baker. | For most young children, the mindset is that their parents, or more generally all adults possess an unconditional power, a larger-than-life quality reflected in each youngster’s eyes. For the kindergarten class at North Park Elementary School in Santa Clarita, Calif., their admiration of their 59-year-old teacher, former Falls Church resident Arlene Marquardt, is not the least bit unfounded. |

Last weekend, I found at least 34,000 people that I wouldn’t mind having in the proverbial fox hole with me. It wasn’t exactly a lengthy interview process. In fact, we didn’t even speak. All they did, really, was compete in the Marine Corps Marathon. |

Nicholas F. Benton: Gay Marriage Déjà Vu Time traveling back 40 or 50 years in my mind, I found the scene in front of me very familiar. The debate last week on gay marriage, in particular the amendment question on the Virginia ballot next Tuesday, could just as readily been a debate on integration in 1957, or interracial marriage in 1967. Anything But Straight: The Wedge Issue That Wasn't WOne of the biggest election stories of 2006 was the non-story of the New Jersey Supreme Court's decision to offer the equivalent of Civil Unions to gay couples. What was most striking about the ruling was the lack of shock value compared to the title wave of raw emotion that gripped the nation when Vermont's high court mandated a similar judicial remedy in 1999.
