why we like them?

The Pipettes are the missing link between Phil Spector and modern-day, popular music. “We've obviously got all the late ‘50s and early ‘60s girl-bands as a starting point,” Rose Pipette admits, “but around that, there's stuff before and all the way up to now that kind of filters through.” That includes a nod and wink to more modern genres like alternative rock 'n' roll.

Can popular music be saved? The Pipettes certainly think so. This spirited, seven-member band is currently ruling the British airwaves thanks to their catchy debut album, We Are The Pipettes.

The members of The Pipettes aren’t afraid to admit they’re something of a concept band. “All music in the ‘60s and ‘70s was a concept,” Becki Pipette says. “The Sex Pistols were the biggest concept band ever, yet people love the Sex Pistols and ruthlessly defend their honesty and integrity.” The same thing may someday be said of the Pipettes, a fun-loving group whose mission it is to bring pop back to the people.

The Pipettes were formed in Brighton, England in 2003 when a local guitarist named Monster Bobby came up with the idea of fusing ‘60s pop with modern indie-rock. The idea clicked with many of his peers and, within weeks, he had successfully formed a seven-person band featuring four male musicians known as The Cassettes and three female vocalists known as The Pipettes.
