September 28, 2006 - In a recent interview with ABC On Demand, Nintendo of America's president, Reggie Fils-Aime, indicated that the videogame giant -- at one time the most successful home console maker in the world -- is with Wii gunning for the number-one position again.
"It's interesting, though. In order for me to win, must they fail? I don't think so. Because they're trying to do something very different. But our goal is to be the leader in this industry -- not only from an innovation standpoint, but also from a market share as well."
Unlike GameCube, which was very similar to PlayStation 2 and Xbox in features in capabilities, Wii is radically different from either PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360. At the core of this difference is an innovative new controller that translates 3D movement by the user into on-screen action. It is for this reason that Nintendo believes it can attract an audience normally uninterested in videogames and propel Wii to new heights of popularity.
