Fargo is over at PC.IGN previewing the Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War demo which will be released this Friday via FilePlanet:
This Friday the Warhammer 40,000 Dawn of War: Dark Crusade expansion pack demo will be unleashed on FilePlanet, but we managed to get our mitts on a build of the demo a few days early to see what's in store. Dawn of War is unique among expansion packs in that it also serves as a standalone game -- making it a good 'gateway game' for anyone out there who for some reason missed the original.
The single-player demo focuses on the might of the Tau, a technological race of zealots whose idea of "Harmony and Enlightenment" is to shoot first and never ask questions.
A Short History of id 08:24 pm

Next-Gen whipped up A Short History of id Software which looks back at the storied developer:
id was the heavy metal band of game studios. They made their smash debut, their even bigger follow-up, they became rich and powerful overnight - and then slowly the excess and the egos ate away all they had made, as each member backed into his own corner, then vanished. And then there was one, the quietest and the brightest and the least interested of all. At their earliest and best, when all their energies were still on making the best game possible available to as many people as possible, they were an inspiration. When they started to get distracted, they became a distraction. When they began to fragment, they became a disappointment. Now at least, with the squabbling over, I get the impression that John Carmack has been granted a kind of peace. Perhaps that's all one should hope for in the end.

Shacknews is reporting that some ten "key" developers have left 3D Realms' Duke Nukem team recently:
Developers confirmed to have left 3D Realms since last December include Scott Alden, Will Bate, Brian Cozzens, Kyle Davis, Andy Hanson, Keith Schuler, and Charlie Wiederhold. Some of the former employees headed up crucial game systems such as physics, animation, and rendering. Notably, Schuler is a sixteen year veteran of Apogee and 3D Realms. Our sources indicate that while the game's team has reached a size of about 24-28 developers, recently it has been closer to 18, meaning these current departures may actually comprise a majority of the team. Several sources have indicated that further information regarding these matters is expected next week.
Gaming's New Drug Culture 02:41 pm

Twitch Guru (a hosted site at Tom's Hardware Guide) posted a feature called Gaming's New Drug Culture: Sex, Drugs and Counter-Strike. Since a large percentage of gamers are teenagers, you might not be too shocked to hear that some of them partake in a little sampling. Topics range from using performance enhancing energy drinks and snorting Ritalin to playing pranks on your pals at LAN parties: You know you're in trouble when your gaming is interrupted by a scream of "come on you f*ckers, who's first?" Things generally go south from there if, when you turn around, you find a completely naked man with a giant erection standing in the middle of the room, beckoning for someone to come over and sit on his lap.
"What the f*ck?" I said, turning to my opponent in a now paused game of Rise of Nations. He laughed and leaned towards me so that our crazed colleague couldn't hear - quite unnecessary, as he was now loudly harassing someone at the far end of the room - and said, with that glint in his eye and half choked laughter in his throat, "we spiked his soup with sextasy."

As promised yesterday, 3D Realms has released the v1.1 patch for Prey: This is a tech/bug fix patch, there are no new game play elements in this update. Please note that the previously announced "new content" (maps, multiplayer skins) is not part of this update, and will be made available at a later date.
Customers who have purchased Prey through Triton should NOT use this patch. Triton customers will be updated through the Triton system. You will be notified that an update is available when you run the game, and will be asked at that time to update; Triton will handle the rest.
A big list of download mirrors can be found here.

Happy humpday, humpsters. Lets see how much news we can post before these Tylenol PMs kick in.
Today's question:
The Xbox 360 has been out for almost a year now. Are you satisfied with the quality of games released so far (graphics, especially) or do you think developers could push the hardware a little more?
