Xbox 360 Owners Rejoice -- The Future is Bright

Man, oh man. Talk about the difference a year will make. This year's E3 was a total reversal over last year's show where Sony wowed the world with their "smoke and mirrors" presentation and everyone was left rather ho-hum after Microsoft's showing. This year Sony bored the crowd at their press conference while everyone at the show was talking about how incredibly freaking awesome all of the Xbox 360 games on the show looked (as well as how neat the Wii-mote was).

It's going to be a great year for Xbox 360 owners. Most of the titles are looking like high-end PC games. Here's just a short list of the shit-hot games you'll be playing on your Xbox 360 shortly:

Bioshock
Prey
Battle for Middle-Earth II
Gears of War
Mass Effect
Rainbow 6: Vegas
Halo 3
Star Wars: Force Unleashed
Indiana Jones

My top picks so far?

BERJAYA
Mass Effect

BERJAYA
Bioshock

If you don't have an Xbox 360, get one. You'll be very happy in a few months. Actually, get two just in case one breaks. ZING!

Day 2 of Being at E3: Cool or Not Cool

Well, Tuesday is drawing to a close. All of the cool editors have run off to the Nintendo conference leaving us poor shmucks to finish off the work here in the war room. But you know what that means, time for a review of my day!

  • Early Morning

  • I woke up at 6:30 so that I could get an early start and be ready for the Nintendo conference. I then got ferried around Los Angelos for an hour and a half as a certain driver of hours got lost. I'm glad I got up so early.
    BERJAYA
  • Morning

  • I watched Nintendo's press conference while eating a cranberry muffin and sipping on some tea.

BERJAYAAs I stated in a previous post, this was one sweet show. You definitely need to check out the images and videos up on IGN if you haven't already.
    BERJAYA
  • Late Morning/Afternoon

  • As soon as the Nintendo conference ended, I started going crazy processing images and videos and posting them on the site. That prevented me from following anything going on at the Microsoft conference, though I did take a break to watch the Fable 2 and Halo 3 trailers -- both good enough for me. I don't have any real impressions about Microsoft just yet, but missing it to process media wasn't exactly a highlight of my day.
    BERJAYA
  • Late Afternoon

  • Everything exploded. Actually, we just lost our internet connection for about an hour. This left me, and practically every other editor, bewildered.

    BERJAYA

After nearly 2 straight days of posting articles and media, we suddenly couldn't. We all just kind of milled around until the call went out that we could once again resume normality.
    BERJAYA
  • Evening

  • Screenshots, screenshots, and more screenshots. Oh, and also I ate some chinese food. The Konami conference had come and gone. Those who went to it returned with some new media. Metal Gear Solid 4 is sweet. Make sure you read Mark Ryan Sallee's impressions of the 15 minute trailer here because he is probably the most devoted Kojima fan in the world and you won't see a better write up on the internet.

    Now I'm wii-lly excited

This is not my first E3 and I like to think that the horrible pep rallys of my tortured high school career have made me cynical and sceptical enough not to become party to rhetoric and hyperbole. I do not need a leader for my cheer. But damn-- that Nintendo conference has me PSYCHED for the Wii now.

Sure, the montages were mostly hilarious, but watching the sword fighting demoed, listening to Link's bow tighten then snap free out of the Wiimote's speaker... it has me psyched for the TWENTY SEVEN PLUS games I'll get to play at Nintendo's booth this week!

Highlights I'm looking forward to beyond the obvious like Zelda, Super Mario, and (my personal fav) Metroid Prime: Corruption...

  • Footage of an updated version of the old-school Track and Field looking game has me excited to play that thing. Back in the day I used to rock the Power Pad-- once again I'll be hopping around my living room sweating like a pony... that sounds pretty bad...

  • Red Steel's swordplay looks bad-ass. I really used to hurt my little brother in our broomstick battles, so I'm happy to finally have a less hazardous version to play. I am looking forward to getting my Kill Bill on with that thing.

  • But-- seriously, Excite Truck? WTF?

  • Watching Miyamoto and some lucky bastard play tennis against Reggie and Iwata-- teh ossum. The one disapointment for me was how not excited that kid was. I'd be like a sorority girl on meth at Price is Right running up on stage if I had won. Frickin' Miyamoto would've gotten a BEAR HUG AND BIG SMOOCH.

In addition to that apparently DS will have 100 games between now and the end of the year (my predicition is that this number will seem less impressive when it is revealed that 70 of them are Sudoku games).

    So, to sum up...

Nintendo Press Conference > Sony Press Conference.

Time to go to Microsoft! Let's see how they do!

    Nintendo Wiins E3?

Nintendo's press conference just ended. Compared to Sony's disappointing show yesterday, Nintendo's conference was an absolute marvel.

If this is all news to you, check out the updates on IGN Wii. What made Nintendo's show great was the games. They showed real games being played by real people. The conference was also a lot more organized and better orchestrated than Sony's (thanks Miyamoto!).

    BERJAYA

They showed a lot of games we probably could have predicted (Mario, Warioware, Zelda), but just seeing the games run and being played with the Wii-mote was great. Totally trounced the Sony conference. Microsoft: You're up next.

Sony Conference: The War Room Consensus

So Sony's E3 conference just ended. Here in IGN's E3 War Room, we were all getting constant updates from the conference. Then Sony dropped the bomb: $599.99 launch price for the PlayStation 3.

Everyone in the room let out a collective "W-T-F!" $599 is a lot of money, even when you're a super rich IGN editor. *

    E3 Debauchery

So, we made it down to Los Angeles mostly safe and sound. With the exception of a harrowing 90-degree bank our fighter-jockey-wannabe 747 pilot made when we were at about 600 feet over residential LA (which caused the entire plane to release a collective gasp and clap when we finally touched down).

We all flew in or drove down last night and stopped by bossman Peer's place for a little pre-E3 BBQ. I took some pics from the party to preserve our festive selves before the hellstorm of E3 officially hits the mainland.

For an added artistic (or is that autistic?) touch, I took a few of these party pics with a long shutter speed to get some crazy light blur effects.

Anyway, gotta go because we're off to the Sony conference to see what they have to say. Sony is kind of the first big official E3 kick-off conference, so into the maelstrom we go...

    Computer??

I've arrived at my 2nd E3. Last year, I'd only been working for IGN for about a week before coming down here, so I had to share a computer with a ton of freelancers. Last night, I mentioned how I was relieved to actually have a computer this year.

Naturally, this morning when I walked into the war room, I had no computer. Supposedly one will be ready for me in a few hours. In the interim, I'm stealing time on laptops from people who aren't here right now.

    Yippy!
