As much as we were all hoping and praying that Halo 2 would include support for online co-op through the campaign mode, sadly, it is not to be. We have confirmed that the co-op campaign mode is relegated to strictly offline play. While the real specifics regarding the reason behind the absence of online co-op still havent been released, our sources tell us it is primarily due to the network code. Bungie made all attempts to implement online and System Link co-op in Halo 2, however with the complexity of the game (improved visuals, number of characters/vehicles on screen, AI, etc.) it was simply impossible to have a worthwhile co-op experience. Obviously, Bungie prides itself on high-quality games and if they say that Halo 2 online and System Link co-op cant be done, then we believe them. Wed rather have a totally optimized Halo 2; which is exactly what youll get on November 9th.
One encouraging detail regarding Halo 2s offline co-op mode is widescreen support. Being that Halo 2 fully supports 16:9 aspect ratio, the game will automatically play in a vertical split-screen so both players will essentially have a full screen to look at. Those gamers using the standard 4:3 ratio will play the co-op mode in a horizontal split-screen just like the original Halo. According to Bungie there is little to no graphical sacrifices in the split-screen co-op mode.
In regards to online play, gamers will also be able to play on Xbox Live with up to 4 players per Xbox. Gamers can each login using their personal Gamertags or can login as guests. Now you can get the best of both worlds with a room full of buddies and online play against human opponents!
Well have much more on Halo 2 as we close in on its November 9th release date.
