May 19, 2005 - From the information available, Dark Sector for the Playstation 3 is a next generation action/stealth game revolving around outer space espionage. The game seems more geared toward action than something like the Splinter Cell games, as the protagonist, Hayden, is able to utilize his suit to wield various powers including becoming invisible to robotic scanning machinery, putting up bullet blocking transparent walls, telekinetically stealing an opponent's weapon, pulling himself to ledges using an invisible force, as well as providing a sort of Matrix-like bullet time effect for his dual pistols' bullets.
Whether the game will be played from a first person, third person, or hybrid perspective is unclear. The game was displayed as a cinematic vignette, showcasing Hayden's escape from various cinematic camera angles. Not much can therefore be said about the user interface. Despite the cinematic aspect of the presentation, the graphics appeared to be rendered in real time. The game sports highly detailed textures and dynamic lighting that help flesh out the dank, shadowy atmosphere in which Hayden lurks. In terms of animation the game seems lacking. Characters move stiffly, as if their joints were choked with crazy glue and they were straining to flex them to their full extent. Facial animation is also lacking, with a limited number of expressions and clumsy lip-synching.
The soundtrack is appropriately eerie, full of creaking metal, hissing steam, whispering and the humming of electronic equipment, though the gunfire sounds far too muted. In one scene where a soldier fires at Hayden it sounds more like Jiffy-Pop than bullets and gunpowder. Despite the sound, marines are sill blown back with an appropriate force after getting peppered with bullets.
With a range of cool gadgets at the player's disposal and a variety of unique powers available via Hayden's suit, Dark Sector is a stealth action adventure worth keeping an eye on.
