April 15th: Death, Taxes, & LAN?
Okay people, tomorrow is THAT day. April 15th is almost upon us, so you know what that mean.
TAX TIME!
Ummm, yea that is true. However, it is also time to get your registration on for the mother of North American LAN Parties. That is right ladies and gentlemen, the one, the only, QUAKECON!
You better be begging for vacation time, booking that hotel, and saving the date of August 11th to the 14th to get your multi-day frag on. As usual, thanks to the sponsors and volunteers for helping make this a free event! First-come, first-serve online registration will begin promptly at 9 P.M. EST, TOMORROW! If you have never visited the website, I advise that you get REGISTERED right now. That way you will not face any delay signing up for the LAN Party once the online sign up section goes live. Past QuakeCon LANs have had the BYOC section fill to capacity in a matter of days or even hours.
LANParty.com will be bringing you updates as the registration evening progresses.
Never been to QuakeCon? Need more information? Need PICS? Head on over to the QuakCon WEBSITE for a massive number of pictures, videos, faqs, and forum topics. -Devil 2 UWednesday, April 13, 2005
Overnight PC just posted a review that takes a look at the main component of any LAN Party, the Ethernet Switch!
Without one, there is not going to be any gaming or file sharing, period. And if you get a bad one, your event may very well be short lived. Here is the introduction of their Ethernet Switch Roundup:
In the course of running a LAN party like Deathnet, you get the chance to stress test a lot of networking equipment. In this roundup, we review 5 unmanaged network switches with varying numbers and speeds of ports, and give you a good idea what youll get with each. The products range in price from a wallet friendly $40 for the 16 port Gigafast switch, up to a much heftier $370 for a 24 port all gigabit Dell switch.
Weather you are interested in starting a LAN Party or looking to expand the size of an existing one, check out what they have to say in their REVIEW. -Devil 2 UMonday, April 11, 2005
UVALAN 7 Announced for June 2005
Vivendi Universal may not give a rats... 'butt' about the Tribes community,
but the community sure seems to be alive!
UVALAN 7 ANNOUNCED FOR JUNE 2005
The Legendary Tribes Community LAN Party Continues!
CHANTILLY, VA (April 7, 2004) - UVALAN, the largest gathering of Tribes
players on earth, continues the legacy of the Tribes community with its annual
LAN party held in Chantilly, Virginia, USA. The party starts
on Thursday, June 30, and concludes Sunday, July 3, 2005.
Competition remains the focal point of the gathering. Bryan “Yankee”
Baumer returns this year as the competitive coordinator. Several games from
the Tribes genre will be featured in this year’s competition for cash
and/or sponsor prizes. Sanctioned Tribes and Tribes 2 tournaments are tentatively
scheduled for this year, along with several other surprise activities for
players.
"We’re going to be doing a lot of gaming," says Grand
Poobah Tom "Cheater" Szabo. "This party has taken on a life
of its own, and we’re going to make it into a grand time for everyone
in the Tribes community." In 2004, Szabo’s “Tribal Wars”
hosted nearly 600 people on two coasts simultaneously, and was sponsored by
major gaming industry companies such as ATI, Sierra, Creative and Soyo.
Cheater goes on to say, “I’m thinking that it will be a grand
Tribes revival this year. There are so many variations out there it’s
going to be hard to choose between all the permutations. But I’ll be
doing everything I can to provide plenty of excitement.”
"Everyone is invited back this year," said sharp-dressed Mark
"old_skul" Szabo. "We had such a great crowd last year that
we had to do it again. We’ve got good people, good staff, great prizes,
and a low-ping network by the legendary Mowat to shoot at your best friends
on." More information will be released in the coming weeks on the official
UVALAN site, www.uvalan.com.
UVALAN has traditionally been held during the summer months and has regularly
attracted many hundreds of players, gamemakers and vendors. More information
is available at http://www.uvalan.com.

Going Out with a Huge Ka-Bang!
As many of us have suspected, our predictions where right on. Quake IV will
be at QuakeCon boys! Quake IV is the latest and last Quake title that will be
released (at least under id's watch) and with this being the 10th anniversary
of QuakeCon, this is a QuakeCon not to be missed!
Hollenshead also teased the crowd with information about the upcoming
QuakeCon, the annual id-sponsored frag-fest scheduled for this August 11 to
14 in Dallas. Namely, he revealed that the next installment in the conference's
titular franchise will indeed be on hand, a fact omitted from last month's
official lineup announcement. "We'll have Quake IV multiplayer to play,"
he said "And because it's also the 10-year anniversary of QuakeCon, we'll
have a few other surprises as well."

Quake, Quake 2 & UT'99 LAN in 2005?
Do any of you guys ever get that itch that makes you scramble through all of your
old PC game CDs? The kind that makes you install some of your old time favorite
shooters, just to come to the realization that no one, at least no one you know
currently plays them?
Well the guys over at LANmaniac have
got your fix! For their April 9th 2005 event they will be holding a “THROW
BACK TO THE GOOD OLD DAYS OF GAMING!” LAN. Where the only games of
the night will be Quake, Quake 2 and UTGOTY! But if the occasional Kingpin
slips in every now, that seems okay.
On April 9th 2005 LANmaniac will be holding an old school FPS LAN. On
this date our ONLY focus will be on old school shooters. As of right now the
only games on our radar are Quake, Quake 2
and Unreal Tournament (possibly some Kingpin). If you are
a 100% hardcore Battlefield 1942, Call of Duty or Unreal Tournament 2004 guy...
this event is NOT for you. But if you are up for the challenge, you are more
than welcome to attend! We just don't want a bunch of babies showing up that
cant handle the outdated graphics and superior gameplay.
Along with this LAN we will also be throwing a LANmaniac BBQ! The BBQ is a
community BBQ where everyone helps to pitch in. When we get the total bill
of expense we break it down by the number of people attending, so it normally
works out to around $6 per head.
If interested, we would be very pleased to see you show up and show your
support for these great old school games!

Scott of Everything USB
just gave the new Logitech MX518 a LAN Party test drive and now he has organized his thoughts into one hell of a detailed review.
Optical illusions are fascinating. What are really just a few dots of ink can effectively fool the mind's depth perception and color recognition, enough to make you look twice and try to feel what's actually there. The MX518 takes advantage of this art with its new faceplate. A dark metallic silver color appears to absorb light in different areas, giving off the appearance of very deep dents in the mouse itself. The Swiss-cheese-like 'holes' are very similar to the NASA photos of moon craters, or perhaps more like someone putting speed holes in a new car with a pickaxe. Whatever it looks like, it will definitely pull attention on store shelves with the see-through box it's packaged in.
Check out the complete REVIEW which covers in game testing, Logitech software, and surface performance. -Devil 2 UTuesday, March 29, 2005
