Frequently asked questions:
---------------------------
Question: What is RAM?
Answer: RAM's long name is Random Access Memory. When a program is started or
run it is loaded into RAM to be run since that is the fastest method of
accessing the memory. If a user runs out of ram Windows then uses the Hard
Drive to load the programs to which slows down the users rig by alot. RAM is
the part of the computer that processes information.
Question: How do I add RAM to my computer?
Answer: Inside your computer there is more than one slot that contain memory
modules. Most computers ship with only one slot which is filled. To add RAM to
your computer you must find out what kind of RAM your computer uses. The
motherboard manual that comes with your computer should have the details on
what kind of RAM you shall be needing. You will also be informed on how much
RAM each slot can hold and how many slots your computer has. When you finally
buy the extra RAM modules you will simply have to snap them in.
Q. How can I determine how much RAM I currently have?
Answer: In Windows, you will have to simply click your START button and click
Control Panel. Click the System icon and look at the information which is
listed in the General tab. The amount of RAM in your system will be displayed
in megabytes.
Q. How do I tell my system I have added memory?
A. Once the RAM is installed your Windows OS will automatically detect the new
memory and begin using it.
Q. What is the best and easiest way raise my system's speed?
Answer: Adding RAM is the easiest and most cost effective way to boost your
computer's performance.
Q. What kind of RAM do I need?
Answer:There are many types of RAM: EDO, FPM, SDRAM SODIMM, RAMBUS, DDR, DDR2
and a few more. Your motherboard manual as said earlier should clearly
identify the kind of RAM that your computer can handle.
Q. How much RAM can I put in my computer?
Answer: Every computer has a different maximum amount of RAM that can be
installed. Each motherboard has different a maximum of RAM that it can handle.
To find out how much ram your motherboard can handle you can simply browse
thru your motherboard manual that came with your computer to find out how much
RAM you can buy to add into your current rig.
- Maximum Memory - This is maximum amount of memory that can be possibly
allocated in your system
- Standard Memory - This is the amount of memory that arrived with your
originalsystem configuration when you bought it
- Slots - This is the number of "holes"/slots that your motherboard has to be
filled with RAM
Question: Can I mix and match PC100 and PC133 SDRAM in my system?
Answer: Yes it is possible for you to mix PC100 and PC133 RAM but sadly your
rig will only be able to run as fast as the slowest module can go which means
that you will not be able to take advantage of your PC133 SDRAM module.
Question: How do I identify RAM chips by sight?
Answer: When you take out a RAM chip you can quickly notice that they either
have one or two notches underneath. If there is one notch it means that it is
DDR RAM and if there are two notches it will mean that your module is SDR.
