April 11, 2005 - IGN FilmForce has learned of the latest additions to the cast of Truth, Justice and the American Way, Focus Features' long-in-development drama about the late Superman star George Reeves (Ben Affleck).

According to reliable sources, Lois Smith (Minority Report, Twister) will portray Helen Bessolo, the estranged mother of George Reeves who hires detective Lamar Moglio (Adrien Brody) to investigate her son's mysterious death.

The 74-year-old Smith's credits include East of Eden, Five Easy Pieces, Fatal Attraction, Dead Man Walking, and Fried Green Tomatoes. The Tony nominee has also appeared on the soap operas All My Children and One Life to Live.

Also cast is Hill Street Blues and NYPD Blue veteran Joe Spano as Howard Strickling, a "fixer" for MGM studio boss Eddie Mannix (Bob Hoskins). Mannix's wife Toni (Diane Lane) is carried on a long-term, open affair with Reeves.

An early draft of Paul Bernbaum's screenplay suggested that Mannix and Strickling may have either covered-up Reeves' death or played a direct role in causing in it. (In all fairness, though, the script also offered plenty of reasons for why Reeves may have killed himself.)

Truth finally begins filming May 2nd in Toronto.
