  Sticky: Developer Q&A;!
[Post A Comment] - Print News | Mail News
We had the opportunity to ask the SWG Devs a few assorted questions this past week, so Brenden "Magi" Gardner whipped up a list of the questions that were on his mind. Julio Torres, LucasArts producer, took the time out of his busy day to answer them for us!
SWG Vault: We saw in a recent publish the elimination of apprenticeship experience points in order to attain master professions. Will this system stay this way or could we expect a new, dynamic system in the future which would demonstrate the original purpose of the teacher and apprentice relationship?

Julio: The apprentice experience points was a very good mechanism for the game, especially for very young servers full of players learning how to become masters, as time went by and more and more masters appeared in the game, the mechanism for the apprentice points became less and less interesting. By removing the apprentice points we intentionally made becoming a master more accessible. There are no current plans to bring the apprentice points.

That's not all! Read more of the Developer Q&A;...

Inspiration Buffs
Print News | Mail News
For all the info check out: Inspiration Buffs

What is an Inspiration Buff and how long can it last?

Inspiration Buffs are the replacement for Mind Buffing post Combat Upgrade. Inspiration buffs will increase one's crafting successes, faction gains and XP gains. All Inspiration Buffs will have the same effect regardless of whether they come from a Novice Entertainer or a Master Dancer. This means that an Inspiration Buff from a Novice Entertainer and Master Dancer will be the same. The maximum duration of an inspiration buff will be 3 hours. The time it takes to get to this maximum will depend on the entertainer's skill level. A novice entertainer may take a minute to give you a 30 minute inspiration, but the same minute spent with a double master dancer/musician with +25 skill tapes will yield a 3 hour buff in that same minute. The buff is a steady application and not in the old system chunks'. There will be no artificial time listened' breakpoints that have to be met for certain gains. It will be a simple system of the longer you listen the more buff time you will get, up to a maximum of 3 hours. You can even leave an entertainer's session and come back to resume the buff increase without having to start over. (I.e. if you got an hour buff and then had to go to a bazaar terminal for a bit, when you return the buffing session would start from whatever you have currently.)

  Blair's Blog - April 1, 2005
Print News | Mail News
What's going on with the Combat Upgrade? Rogue_5 takes over Blair's Blog for the day, and answers some pressing questions about what's happening on TC-5.
Welcome back to Blair's Blog on Combat Upgrade. My name is Grant McDaniel (aka Rogue_5) and I am the Project Manager for the SWG Combat Upgrade. I wanted to take advantage of this blog and give you all some more information about some of the things going on with Combat Upgrade. (Please don't tell Blair I stole his blog.)

Last night we opened up one of our Test Center servers giving everyone the first peek at what we have been doing with Combat Upgrade. We have been getting a lot of very useful feedback from everyone and are working very hard to sort through it all so that we can understand what you like and what areas we need to improve upon. Currently we are asking that everyone focus on the level 1 - 15 mobs Tatooine. Soon we plan on asking people to move to other starting planets and to start working their way up to more mid-level mobs.

  Jedi Rebellion - Chapter Thirty-One
Print News | Mail News
Thank you to everyone for being patient as J. J. crafted the latest chapter of Jedi Rebellion.. I think you'll find that this one is worth the wait!
The room they took me to was the one just off to the right of the main entrance. It wasn't very large, maybe five meters square, but had been furnished with several bunks of beds and basic amenities. It was nice enough, but I knew a jail cell when I saw one. The four Dark Jedi left me there and as soon as they were on the other side of the door, a blue force field popped up. Guess I wasn't going anywhere.

What are you waiting for? Go! Now! Read Chapter Thirty-One: The Purpose..

The Pilot's Cockpit
[Post A Comment] - Print News | Mail News
Changes, changes, changes. More than we've ever seen before. The Combat Upgrade hits Test Center SOON.. and here are Brenden "Magi" Gardner's thoughts on what's been revealed so far:
Details, details, details! Everyone loves details!

I do not know how to adequately put how I felt when the Combat Upgrade documents were revealed last night. Though, if I were to try, I would probably use the word surprised. Yes, surprised more than anything else.

Given the nature of SOE, and their history (not to mention Star Wars Galaxies' history) I would've expected for this whole thing to be tight-lipped, with only a handful of testers allowed in and the NDA released just days before May 05, 2005.

I was wrong on both fronts.

Combat Upgrade is coming to Test Center
Print News | Mail News
More CU info? Looks like it's all going down soon on a Test Center near you!!!

Combat Upgrade is coming to Test Center

Test Center Prime

Once the Combat Upgrade Testing begins, we will all be playing in a brand new galaxy. The Test Center community's version of the galaxy, which we affectionately refer to as "TC-Prime" will be mothballed for the duration of the Combat Upgrade testing process.

How to Join Test Center

We encourage as many players as possible to join Test Center to get involved in this testing so we can get your comments and feedback. For those of you interested in joining Test Center , here is how to do it:

To use the TC-EP3 Test Center server, open the Launchpad as you normally would do so.

* Read and acknowledge the Terms of Service
* Enter in your username and password

After the game has completed updating; click the Test Center button at the bottom of the launchpad. If you are logging on to Test Center for the first time you will need to follow the prompts to install Test Center.

After the install has completed click the Test Center button and it will then launch the Test Center Launchpad . Next you will need to choose the server named TC-EP3Beta and go through the character creation process.

Thank you all for your support and we look forward to your feedback as we progress through testing of this exciting new upgrade to combat for Star Wars Galaxies.

Galaxy-wide Vendor Search is here!

Have you ever wanted to search for an item to buy without having to travel across the entire planet randomly checking vendors? Well now you can! We have enhanced the functionality of our bazaar terminals to include the ability to search all player vendors for items you may be looking for. This new feature will greatly improve how vendors are handled in the game. Read on for more information.

Overview:

The purpose of vendor search function is to allow vendor owned items to be searched from anywhere in the galaxy. This will include the following functions:

  • Each vendor owner can decide whether to allow his or her vendors to be searchable in the market. There is an option for vendor owners to turn on/off the search option on his or her vendor. The vendor owner will be able to find current search option settings for each of his or her vendor(s)
  • When a vendor owner turns on the search option, a player should be able to go to any bazaar and list all items owned by this vendor
  • When a vendor owner turns off the search option, the vendor is no longer listed in the galaxy-wide network search. With this search option turned off, vendor owners have the ability to conduct private auctions. Players will need to physically go to the vendor and click "Use Vendor" to list items from this vendor.

  Jedi Rebellion - Chapter Thirty
Print News | Mail News
At last! The next chapter of Jedi Rebellion is ready for viewing.. and what a chapter it is!
He looked good. Well, from what I could see of him. His face was covered in a stylized mask which obscured all but his mouth and eyes. He wore a dark robe that clearly labeled him as Dark Jedi, and it had been cut in such a way to reveal his arms and a good portion of his chest. The person I used to know as a mildly skinny, green-skinned Twi'lek teenager from twenty years ago had grown into a well built and muscular adult. The overall look would have been intimidating if I hadn't known him from before. Not that I didn't have reservations about what was to come, it just didn't bother me all that much.

What are you waiting for? Go read Chapter Thirty - Pieces of a Puzzle!

Tuesday Tips March 22nd - Disabling Ships Reactors
Print News | Mail News
Disabling Ship Reactors

There are several different mission types in Jump to Lightspeed. For many of the missions, the main objective is simply to destroy enemy ships. There are other types of missions however where the primary objective is to inspect a ship or other type of activity.

If you need to disable a ship without destroying it, you can target specific components on an enemy ship. To do this, you use the targeting commands for, "Cycle Component Forward" and "Cycle Component Backward". Simply target a key component and blast it! This technique of disabling ships is also handy if you get ambushed by powerful enemy ships. If you can take out their reactor (or weapons), you might be able to make a getaway!

These targeting commands start out bound to the following keys:

  • Cycle Component Forward: ]
  • Cycle Component Backward: [

Target an enemy ship then use either of these keys to cycle through the various components on an enemy ship. The name of the component will appear in the targeting window. Cycle through the components to target the specific one you want to disable. This could be the reactor, weapons, engine, etc.

To make this even easier to accomplish in combat, you can re-map these keys to something you prefer or if you have a joystick, you can re-map the "Cycle Component Forward / Backward" to a joystick button for fast action.

You can re-map this (or any command) by:

  • Open your Options window (CTRL-O)
  • Press the Controls Button on the Left
  • Click the "Target" tab to find all of your targeting options
  • Find the option you want to remap and click, "Rebind"
  • Click the button you want to use and then click "ok"
  • Click the "Apply" Button and then "Done"

  The Pilot's Cockpit
[Post A Comment] - Print News | Mail News
Brenden "Magi" Gardner has read the new Combat Upgrade document that was just released, and has a few things to say about the upcoming changes...
Take out your pens or pencils and mark Friday March 18, 2005 as the day that Star Wars Galaxies was saved. Well, alright, I guess Thursday May 05, 2005 would be the better day (when the combat upgrade and expansion is released). Still though, we are learning some very interesting details and that will only continue in the coming weeks.

With this in mind, I wish to inform my readers that the direction of this column will change slightly with the weeks leading up to, and after the combat upgrade. The scope of this update is vast and so many topics will be covered and I want to cover them all! The combat upgrade is the future of Star Wars Galaxies and it would only be prudent make sure all the bases are covered.

  Alliance Briefing - Kashyyyk
Print News | Mail News
This week's Friday Feature is a briefing on what to expect when you arrive on Kashyyyk!
This briefing is intended for members of the Alliance who are assisting in liberation efforts on Kashyyyk. It is intended to familiarize you with basic information about the world, its inhabitants and flora. The Empire has shown great interest in this planet as a source of resources... mainly consisting of Wookiee Slaves. They suspect that the Wookiees are getting assistance from the Alliance and are therefore tightening their grip on the system with the help of the Trandoshans. It is of utmost importance that we increase our support to the Wookiee resistance.
