Blizzard is once again hiring. I would be content just to be the janitor at Blizzard so good luck to those of you with the skills to be either an Automated Tools Programmer or a 3D level Designer.

Tips of the Week #18
[Post A Comment] - Print News | Mail News
RPG Vault has pushed their latest World of Warcraft tips article out today, #18. This week they explore the Rogue and what are the benefits and drawbacks related to crafting?

If the thought of sealing out large doses of close combat damage appeals to you, the Rogue class is one you should consider. Your Stealth ability will allow you to strike as if out of thin air, and if you can get behind an enemy, you'll be able to Backstab for additional injury.

Is World of Warcraft Doomed?
[Post A Comment] - Print News | Mail News
I saw over at Slashdot that Grimwell is forecasting the doom of World of Warcraft.

No matter if you agree or disagree it is a well written, thought provoking article and worth a read.

I personally feel some good points are made but I believe an emphasis on content should be pushed a bit more. Losing half the current playerbase is a distinct possibility if content continues to come as slow as it has. If Blizzard ramps up the content to more of a monthly basis the retention rates will not suffer too much. It is inevitable though that the game will lose a percentage of players simply due to the fact WoW brought so many players to the MMO-realm - gamers that may have found out WoW is not for them, or are interested in giving other options a whirl.

New Fan Fiction Series: Legion's Legacy
[Post A Comment] - Print News | Mail News
New starting this Friday is a brand new Fiction series by Kimada entitled "Legion's Legacy". Here's a clip from the first chapter:
s he raced, he wondered if he had made the right decision, leaving the Undercity and all. He was much better at the theoretical uses of chaos rather than the practical application, and had an alarming tendency to find himself mangled into unnatural shapes. If he had stayed in the lands of the Forsaken, he could have studied to his still hearts content, with the only physical harm coming from an experiment that went bad.

Hurrying over a river Delano had to admit to himself, since self deception never really suited him, that even with his frequent visits to the spirit healer, he was happier than he had been since the fall of his (living) homelands. He was traveling, seeing new things and in the company of people whom were quite different than the angst spewing corpses of his home. Practicing his Chaos magic brought out hidden talents of the energy, and when he met other Warlocks he could compare notes.
You can read the entire first chapter here.

New Interview with Shane Dabiri
[Post A Comment] - Print News | Mail News
File Front has up their latest interview with Blizzard developer Shane Dabiri. Highlights included Hero Classes, expansion packs, mounts and battlegrounds.
In fact, our focus is to continue to develop end game content to broaden the number of things players can do post level 50. That includes tweaks to class abilities, adding new items, adding new quests, dungeons, and so forth.
He also addresses some of the server issues and the lag in Iron Forge that turns my computer into a slideshow.

World of Warcraft Review
Print News | Mail News
The Gamers Temple has posted a review of World of Warcraft giving it the score of 92% and a Award of Excellence.

Not only are a lot of the annoyances of MMORPG gaming smoothed out, World of Warcraft does an amazing job of crafting its game world. The graphics are straight out of Warcraft III and make use of the same brilliant colors and stylized, comic book-like characters and locations. Each of its zones has a unique color palette and its own feel, but the whole time there is no doubt that youre in a Warcraft game. There are also plenty of touches that Warcraft fans will appreciate, such as logging camps with human peasants busily chopping wood and bringing it back to a gathering point. Speak to one of them and youll hear the familiar unit acknowledgement phrases from the games real-time strategy inspiration. The world is packed with details that help bring it alive, water flows in streams and cascades over falls, birds fly through the air, and benign fauna can be seen in the wilderness. While the games open spaces are certainly impressive, the cities are simply incredible. They are complete cities, filled with streets, alleyways, parks, shops, and everything that youd expect to find in a city. The architecture is often remarkable, such as the monument-lined stone bridge that leads to the gates of the human city. When you first enter one of the cities, youll feel like a tourist and will want to spend some time walking around and taking in the sights.

10. Undeads are rottening, trolls have big toes, orcs are Shrek, and Taurens are cows. ~Sturmshadow

  New Column: Bowling for Ironforge
[Post A Comment] - Print News | Mail News
New today and every Thursday is a column by Jared "Nazfib" Newbold entitled "Bowling for Ironforge". The first entry is called "Why You Should Stop Controlling People and Play". Here's a clip:
I was doing the typical instance crawl last night when I discovered one of my all-time gaming pet peeves; the control-freak. Oh, you know the type, I think, "Ok, guys, everyone ranged attack this boss, I'll tank. Healers, only heal me." I've seen them in other multi-player games of course but they hold a special place in my pantheon of annoying gamers when it comes to MMORPGS. Let me be the team leader, they say, I can set up the party the right way.
Be sure to give the whole column a read and then check back next Thursday for another entry!

Weekly Dev Watch
[Post A Comment] - Print News | Mail News
Every week I will be browsing the official boards to see what the devs are up to! I will gather interesting info so you gamers can see what is going on without reading the boards.

Languages

Ever wonder if we could learn other languages?

Tyren 3/28/2005 10:01:54 AM PST
"We do not currently have plans to allow learnable languages."
To see the whole post go here .

Does not look like that is coming anytime soon.

So How Much Is a Full Rest State

So with blizzard giving us a full rest state bonus. How much experience are we actually getting.

Caydiem on 3/31/2005 11:51:46 AM PST
"All characters now have full rest state, which is 30 bubbles. This lasts until you burn it off. ;)"
To see the whole post go here

Yay 30 bubbles of double xp. Enjoy it!

So What Do The Level 60's Get?

With the downtime we received blizzard has given us a full rested xp state. But what compensation will the level 60's receive?

Caydiem on 3/30/2005 1:44:16 PM PST
"We're aware that level 60 characters do not gain from having rest experience at this time, however, we do not have another form of in-game compensation that we can give that would both 1) satisfy level 60 players and 2) not damage the economy/gameplay as a whole."
To see the whole post go here

Sorry level 60's better luck next time.

In-Game Support

We all know that the GM's in WoW suffer a tremendous workload. A question was raised on the general boards if they could implement a new system to help the GM's. This system would consist of volunteers.

Caydiem on 3/30/2005 5:57:57 PM PST
"Due to the legal issues and management concerns surrounding volunteers, we do not plan upon having a system like this at this time."
To see the whole post go here

O well who knows maybe it could of worked.

Do You Have Spirit?

There has been a lot of discussion on the general boards about how spirit was nerfed to uselessness. Well someone has some info for you!

Eyonix on 3/30/2005 7:12:24 PM PST
"I'm not sure of the specifics at this time, however, I know that the development team is planning on making changes to the way spirit currently works, or at the very least it benefits certain classes. As soon we have additional insight into the matter, we will provide an update."
To see the whole post go here

Sounds like great news.

No Notice About The Easter Event

I did wonder myself why there was no announcement about the easter event.

Tyren on 3/28/2005 11:29:29 AM PST
" We want to keep such events a relative surprise, rather than announcing them beforehand. Major events such as the winter-time events in the game were given some notice in the patch notes. :)"
To see the whole post go here

And what a wonderful surprise it was.

Dungeon Development

So how does blizzard develop their dungeons. A very informative post was seen on the WoW raids and dungeons board.

Tigole on 3/28/2005 9:05:24 AM PST
" The dungeon team works on more than one dungeon at a time. And then some.

Dungeons have many stages of development:

--concept
--rough level design/layout
--art/lighting pass
--rough spawn layout
--pull testing
--creature design
--quest design
--boss design
--itemization
--countless playtesting, bug fixing
--polish
--additional polish, bug fixing and exploit prevention (once live)

So at any one time, there are lots of different dungeons being worked on at one time. In the process of development, we often run into various roadblocks. Perhaps we're waiting on some new code or art that has us held up on a certain dungeon. If we have more than one dungeon in the pipeline, we can switch over and make progress on something else while we wait.

The dungeon team is also responsible for other tasks in development as well. For example, we do a lot of work on the PvP battlegrounds. We also were responsible for Lord Kazzak and Azuregos.

There's a lot of iteration that takes place in the dungeon design process. Some people would be interested to know that Blackrock Depths used to be about 1/5 the size and included Ragnaros's Lair at one time. Or that Blackrock Spire used to only consist of the area known as UBRS, which also included a part of Blackwing Lair. Hordemar city was added later. Or you know the little chapel in Stratholme? That's where the Scarlet Bastion used to be -- and it only had 1 room inside...

So right now our primary focus is to get Blackwing Lair out but we are very actively working on other zones as well. For example, we have a very casual raid zone in the works. I hope this answers your question ;)"
To see the whole post go here

Amazing info Tigole thank you.

Paladins Get No Love

Well if you have ever browsed the paladin class forums you will see that there are about no blue posts.

Caydiem on 3/31/2005 1:56:31 PM PST
"Other classes are currently higher priority than Paladins at this time. Eventually, we'll dive in. ;)".
To see the whole post go here

Just wait your turn paladins.

Downloading and Buying Your Key Online

So can you buy your authentication key online and just download the game.

Caydiem on 3/30/2005 10:02:00 PM PST
"We do not offer this service at this time."
To see the whole post go here

Looks like you will have to venture out and actually buy the game in stores.

I hope this has helped ease your news craving. Until next time!

Honor System Q&A;
[Post A Comment] - Print News | Mail News
Today Blizzard posted a Q&A; with the person who designed the honor system. Here's a brief clip:
As a working professional I love the current implementation of the rest system. What has been released thus far about the honor system sounds like a grinder's paradise. Are the developers definitely going to include a helping hand, per se, for the casual player?

We have implemented a system very similar to the rest state system for honor. This system will give you a bonus to the number of honor points you earn in a week, up to a certain amount. It is slightly different in that each week the bonus pool re-fills itself completely. Once you have used up this pool for the week, you will earn points at a normal rate.

In addition, since the majority of players in WoW are casual gamers, the majority of player will be competing against players of a similar skill level and playtime. We expect many players to be surprised at how viable they will be in the honor system.
Interesting stuff! Read the full article here.
