BERJAYA Pariah Hands-On 10:11 pm - Robert 'Apache' Howarth - Games: Action BERJAYA (0 comments)
PC.IGN scored some hands-on impressions of Pariah, which is being developed by the co-creators of Unreal and UT, Digital Extremes:
In the first several hours, you also encounter a variety of bad guys armed with a variety of weapons, and they're not afraid to be aggressive. They'll come in waves, patrol in groups, and guard key locations. They also have a bunch of well-delivered catchphrases, but the frequency could be toned down a bit, as some of them get used a bit much. The bad guys also make an effort to stay behind cover, fall back, and keep clear of grenades.

With a cool weapons system, complex environments, lots of character and style, Pariah looks like it's going to be a pretty fun and involving game that puts the Digital Extremes stamp on single-player shooters in a way that Unreal II couldn't quite do. I don't know if it will blow you away, but you'll have to make an effort to not have some fun.

Empire Earth 2 Impressions 10:05 pm - Robert 'Apache' Howarth - Games: Real-Time Strategy BERJAYA (0 comments)
Gamespy kicked up some impressions of the single player portion of Empire Earth 2:

Empire Earth II is very much a traditional, big-scale real-time strategy game. If you played the original game, then you already know what's involved. But if you didn't, here is the gist: Empire Earth II will let you guide a civilization from the dawn of history to the near-distant future in a single game. This means that you'll start in the Stone Age, gather resources, construct cities, and research advances to propel your civilization forward through history. At least, that's the case if you play the traditional skirmish mode against the computer or human opponents.

Star Wars Republic Commando Patch 10:01 pm - Robert 'Apache' Howarth - Games: Action BERJAYA (0 comments)
3D Gamers has a new patch for Star Wars: Republic Commando: "The first update for Star Wars Republic Commando is now online, keeping the recent sci-fi first-person shooter by LucasArts at version 1.0. This release is less a patch and more an add-on, as it adds one new multiplayer map titled Hangar, suitable for up to 16 players in all multiplayer modes." It comes in at 2.9 megs.

Lara Shows Off New Boob Job 01:59 pm - Andrew Burnes - Games: Action BERJAYA (18 comments)
The world gloriously sighed in disinterest today as Eidos announced the new Tomb Raider title, Legend:

"In setting the stage for the Tomb Raider franchise moving forward, we took ourselves back to Lara's origins, asked ourselves the hard questions and challenged ourselves to think differently," said Chip Blundell, vice president of brand marketing, Eidos Inc. "Who is Lara Croft? What makes her tick? How is she relevant today? Only by answering these questions could we ensure that gamers get the experience they deserve with the character they love."

Eighteen months ago, Tomb Raider team members at Crystal Dynamics embarked on their own quest to rediscover Lara Croft. During their soul-searching mission, they unearthed past consumer surveys, conducted new research, re-read every game review, listened to lots of passionate pleas and opinions from gamers and re-played through every Tomb Raider product. From this introspection and open-minded search for a fresh perspective, Tomb Raider: Legend was born.

Tomb Raider: Legend revives the athletic, intelligent and entertaining adventurer who won the hearts and minds of gamers worldwide. Lara comes alive with intricately animated expressions, moves and abilities. An arsenal of modern equipment, such as a magnetic grappling device, binoculars, frag grenades, personal lighting device and communications equipment, allows gamers to experience tomb raiding as never before.

Eidos and Crystal Dynamics shaped Lara's look and movements to be an inherent extension of her skills, motivation and personality. Lara's character model features natural structure, realistic textures, detailed facial features, reactive eyes and fluid motion, all of which make her part of a living environment.

New character animations and controls allow her to move through stunning environments with grace and precision, while an understanding of the game's original appeal reinvigorates the fundamental explore-and-solve adventure experience.

Just below you can check out Lara's new look, which obviously required a lot of that soul-searching:

SWAT 4 Ships 11:11 am - Andrew Burnes - Games: Action BERJAYA (0 comments)
The excellent SWAT 4 should now be showing up in North American stores:

SWAT 4, the latest edition of the popular award-winning SWAT franchise, has shipped for the PC to retail outlets nationwide. Developed by Irrational Games, SWAT 4 allows players to take control of a squad of up to five SWAT officers tasked with performing dangerous operations such as high risk warrant service, rapid deployment, barricaded suspects and hostage situations. To ensure authenticity, VU Games enlisted Ken Thatcher, a 24-year SWAT veteran, as the game's consultant.

From intense hostage situations to high risk undercover operations, players will tactically command their teams and address every situation differently, where a split second mistake could lead to failure. Tension is the key element of SWAT 4, and the game emphasizes tactical deployment over pure run-and-gun action. Proper use of a broad range of real police gear, including tactical mainstays such as the Colt M-4 carbine, the Benelli M4 Super 90 shotgun and Surefire tactical lights, will help the team to overcome any obstacle, rescue endangered civilians, and bring the bad guys to justice.

SWAT 4's 14 single-player missions feature random enemy placement ensuring the player's experience is different each time the level is played. Players can also use the quick mission maker to create and customize missions, including modification of enemy and civilian AI, mission objectives and more. SWAT 4 includes extensive multiplayer functionality including co-operative modes and team based competitive modes with up to 16 players.

Check out the official site for more.

Update: The friendly folks at TeamWarfare send word of a Sierra sponsored SWAT 4 TDM tournament that includes expensive bits of tech as prizes.

Prey At E3? 10:26 am - Andrew Burnes - Games: Action BERJAYA (20 comments)
CNN Money's latest column suggests that Prey, originally a 3D Realms game, will be making its first appearance at E3 since 1998, and as expected it'll be powered by the Doom 3 engine:

The show's biggest surprise, though, will likely be the revelation of "Prey". Gamers first heard of "Prey" in 1997. The game, originally about a Native American who fights several nefarious alien races, was thought to be cancelled, but quietly restarted a few years ago. The new version will use the "Doom 3" graphics engine and is said to be a visually striking title. There's no word on whether the story has changed.

Human Head Studios is developing; for nostalgias sake you can view the 1998 trailer here.

Connery Back For Bond 03:14 am - Andrew Burnes - Games: Action BERJAYA (15 comments)
Word out of the Hollywood Reporter today is that Sean Connery is reprising his excellent rendition of 007 for EA's forthcoming From Russia With Love, which will also feature the likenesses of other cast members, including the deceased Desmond Llewelyn:

Connery will record dialogue for the game, and his likeness will appear as it did in MGM's 1963 hit movie, his second outing as the suave British super spy.

He will be joined by other likenesses from the original film's characters, including Q (Desmond Llewelyn), Donald "Red" Grant (Robert Shaw), Rosa Klebb (Lotte Lenya), Tatiana Romanova (Daniela Bianchi), Kerim Bay (Pedro Armendariz) and Miss Moneypenny (Lois Maxwell).

In addition, EA said it will work with Hollywood talent to round out the game's experience. "As an artist, I see this as another way to explore the creative process," Connery said. "Video games are an extremely popular form of entertainment today, and I am looking forward to seeing how it all fits together."

All the talent in the world can't save this game if it's as bad as GoldenEye: Rogue Agent.

The Few Who Pwn The Many 01:26 am - Robert 'Apache' Howarth - Games: MMOG BERJAYA (10 comments)
Mythic's Scott "Lum The Mad" Jennings updated his blog with his thoughts on Guild Wars' claim that you don't need to actually play very long and be able to kick anyone's ass in it. It's just all about having C-S twitch like skills and not having to worry about gaining experience, items, and all that other jazz:

Now, what skill based games DO well is give you the illusion that you have a chance - similar to slot machines in Vegas, there's always the chance that you could possibly defeat that top ten percent, whereas in most time-investment games higher level mathematically must always defeat lower. So the key, I feel, is to introduce that element of "fairness", that a lower "level" or whatever advancement schema you are using at least has a ghost of a chance of defeating a higher "level", while still meaningfully rewarding those who have invested in their character. It's definitely a very fine line to travel down. Basically, you have to ensure the 90% are still enjoying themselves, even while knowing that the 10% are running amuck through the rest of the ecosystem.

Because, whether due to greater skill in tactics, twitching or time, the 10% will always pwn the 90%.

Today's question:

What is the last game you bought and what are your impressions of it?

You might've noticed Steejee added a little comments link under the poll. He says that there should be a number display under it as well after he figures out how to hack it into our current design. Speaking of which, the IGN guys should be starting work on the new site (knock on wood) fairly soon. I'm told that pop-up ads will be a thing of the past, plus less of those full screen thingies, so woot for that. Obviously there are ways to kill all the ads now like using Firefox or signing up to be an Insider (well, the tower and side ad still show), but it's a nice start. Ideas for a new logo? hmm...

BERJAYA The Movies Preview 08:51 pm - Robert 'Apache' Howarth - Games: Simulation BERJAYA (9 comments)
PC.IGN popped out a look at Lionhead's The Movies:
In some ways, The Movies almost behaves like The Sims. Players will have to put a lot of their effort into creating and managing superstars, whether they be of the actor or director persuasion. The fun thing about these stars is that they each have their own personalities, can get into stupid situations that we see stars constantly get into in real life, and can make or break a movie project.

Therefore, players will have to spend a good deal of time making sure their stars are happy. Actors and actresses are like children. They need to be coddled, cared for, occasionally throw tantrums, and get themselves into ridiculous situations that are both entertaining and baffling. So instead of managing numbers most of the time, players of The Movies will be managing stars of the movie world in order to raise their popularity level with the movie going public and therefore, the returns on the movie.

Give me 1,000 red jelly beans or I'm walking!

Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil Review 05:06 pm - Robert 'Apache' Howarth - Games: Action BERJAYA (6 comments)
PC.IGN has the first review of id's first expansion pack to Doom 3 - Resurrection of Evil. While they give the addon a nice verbal lashing, it still recieved a pretty high 8.4/10 score. Here's a taste:

Thankfully, multiplayer offers a solid vacation from the disappointing campaign. Player capacity has been increased from four to eight, with no noticeable slowdowns as a result, and there's the all-new CTF mode, which is pretty fun. Here, the maps are well-designed, and the action is just like id multiplayer should be: hairy, chunky, and virtually non-stop. Some of the maps are quite cool and imaginative, while others are more standard but quite serviceable. The maps are also crafted nicely to cater to the smaller groups. As I've said before, the number of players on a map isn't nearly as important as the map itself, and RoE holds its own quite well in this respect. There was no grabber gun in the modes I played, but the double shotty complemented the original arsenal pretty well. In the long run, Doom 3 multiplayer typically boils down to a game of "Guess Who Has the Rocket Launcher," but it's diverting enough for a few hours of play; I certainly wouldn't crown RoE as the new king of multiplayer.

The Matrix Online: Legacy 04:44 pm - Robert 'Apache' Howarth - Games: MMOG BERJAYA (10 comments)
Warner Brothers sends word that it will be holding a special live event on April 6th called The Matrix Online: Legacy which is a real-time GM controlled event being run by Monolith who play the Morpheus, Niobe, the Merovingian, Flood, Agent Skinner, Agent Gray characters.

In semi-related news Wired shares its first impressions of the game:

The good things about The Matrix Online are so few, it's easiest to get them out of the way first. The game captures the look of the movies very well, from the gritty urban surroundings to the hyper-modern outfits. The music is nicely atmospheric, and fans of the trilogy will find references everywhere, from prominent AI characters to stylish fighting moves.

The rest of the game is unpleasant. To begin with, the interface is a mess, filled with minor inconveniences and the occasional mission-stalling bug. For example, most missions start with entering a building and stepping into an elevator. The interface requires you to double-click to open the elevator, double-click to pull up the floor buttons, click to choose a floor, then double-click again to open the elevator door from the inside. That's right, The Matrix Online manages to make elevators in the game work more poorly than they do in real life. This is just one example; the game is filled with a constant flow of poor interface choices.

Quake 4 at QuakeCon 03:33 pm - Robert 'Apache' Howarth - Games: Action BERJAYA (7 comments)
Word from id's Todd Hollenshead is that Quake 4 will be on display at this year's QuakeCon:

Hollenshead also teased the crowd with information about the upcoming QuakeCon, the annual id-sponsored frag-fest scheduled for this August 11 to 14 in Dallas. Namely, he revealed that the next installment in the conference's titular franchise will indeed be on hand, a fact omitted from last month's official lineup announcement. "We'll have Quake IV multiplayer to play," he said "And because it's also the 10 year anniversary of QuakeCon, we'll have a few other surprises as well."

"Xbox gamers have been anxiously awaiting their chance to experience the terror of DOOM 3 and now the wait is over. For PC fans, Resurrection of Evil delivers tougher demons, faster action, new weapons, and the same unrelenting terror that has shocked millions of players worldwide."

DOOM 3 Xbox
Heralded by Official Xbox Magazine as "a genuine horror masterpiece," and awarded a 10 out of 10 score from XBN magazine, DOOM 3 for the Xbox makes the living room the scariest place in the house with heart-pounding action, CG-quality graphics and haunting 5.1 Dolby Digital sound. DOOM 3: Resurrection of Evil
Co-developed by Nerve Software and id Software, DOOM 3: Resurrection of Evil continues the terrifying and intense action of the top selling, critically acclaimed DOOM 3, which was awarded 94% from PC Gamer and five out of five stars from Computer Gaming World.

Featuring new locations, puzzles and extraordinary powers like the ability to slow time, Resurrection of Evil will have players reloading for the bloodiest battle yet.

The expansion pack also features multiplayer support for up to eight players covering five modes of play, including "Capture The Flag," created in part by development studio Threewave, designers of CTF for the original QUAKE.

Black & White 2 Community Diary 3 09:55 am - Andrew Burnes - Games: Real-Time Strategy BERJAYA (0 comments)
Lionhead's Sam Van Tilburgh sends word to tell us the latest Black & White 2 Community Diary is online, complete with new screenshot:

We've all also seen (and heard) Peter make the claim that Black&White; 2 will be the "greatest strategy game of all time". Madness! Absolute madness I tell you! However, I believe Lionhead's ambition to make games is to make them the greatest games out there. They aim to be innovative, they aim to create something new, and they aim to reach for the sky. I admire that - yes Lionhead might be paying me (a small wage) but I'm also a gamer who loves playing videogames and who loves new and refreshing games.

No matter how much there's been flamed about both Black and White and Fable; I do think most of us would agree that for a gamer both these games offered fresh, new and most of all: really enjoyable entertainment. If Lionhead sets out to do something, they will aim for it to be the greatest thing ever. I think everyone should have such a passion in whatever they do. If you don't, you're very likely to end up with mediocre products!

Sam also points to their recent mailbag and gallery updates.

Burnout Revenge Announced; Nudies 06:27 am - Andrew Burnes - Consoles: General News BERJAYA (13 comments)
In a brief press release EA has today announced the fourth Burnout title, Revenge:

According to the 2004 Urban Mobility Report by the Texas Transportation Institute, U.S. commuters endured 3.5 billion hours of traffic delays in 2002, at a cost of more than $63.2 billion. It's hell on the highway and Electronic Arts today announced plans to let gamers live out their wildest commuter fantasies this September with Burnout Revenge.

Burnout Revenge lets gamers rip through rush hour traffic and lay waste to scores of rubbernecking roadhogs in an over-the-top scene of vehicular mayhem. The game is currently in development by Criterion Games for the PlayStation 2 computer entertainment system and Xbox video game system from Microsoft.

In addition to tricked out new race, crash and road rage modes, Burnout Revenge takes the series' blistering speed and spectacular destruction to dizzying new heights with an all-new Revenge mode, challenging gamers to battle the clock and unleash their frustrations on rush hour traffic.

World of WarCraft on the Decline? 03:45 am - Robert 'Apache' Howarth - Games: MMOG BERJAYA (30 comments)
Is World of WarCraft Doomed? That's what Grimwell Online seems to think as they argue that the game's structure isn't very long term subscriber friendly. Why does it have 1.5 million customers now?

My theory is based on WoW being categorized as a "New School `Casual Friendly` Slayer." Those games suffer from longevity issues, and World of Warcraft is no exception. I consider those games little more compelling in the long term than Diablo II. World of Warcraft's excellent sales figures do not impact this, because when Diablo II was released, I'm certain it flew off the shelf just as quickly. Like World of Warcraft, the number of people playing Diablo II could have been counted in the hundreds of thousands. How many do you think are playing it now?
Personally, I played WoW for a couple months non-stop and had a ball. I have fond memories for the most part, as I do from every Blizzard game I've played in the past. If / when any new expansions come out, I'm sure I'll check those out as well.

The stunningly beautiful action-RPG, exclusively for Xbox, will burst into North American retail outlets starting on April 12, with worldwide distribution occurring shortly thereafter. Jade Empire fever has reached a deafening roar recently, with more than 11 major media outlets naming it one of the most anticipated games of 2005.

And the Biggest Causes of Piracy Are... 03:15 am - Robert 'Apache' Howarth - Games: General News BERJAYA (10 comments)
With around 4,000 votes in last week's poll, the biggest causes of piracy were:

1) People can't afford to buy the stuff (1266).
2) They want to try before buying it (1196)
3) People are just cheap to pay for it (966)
4) It's faster to pirate than to buy (330).
5) There's a lack of law enforcement preventing piracy (127).
6) For the thrill of it (58).

Keep in mind, people pirate a lot more stuff than just software. Music, movies, even TV shows are out there for people to grab online. Being a digital junkie is expensive, so I'm not too shocked that the can't afford option won. Try before you buy was pretty popular also, as was the whole people are too cheap option. In the age of the Internet there has to be some type of law enforcement to protect the rights of the companies who put this stuff out. How much money is being lost from all this piracy and how much would it cost to enforce the laws is up for debate, but unless things change, annoying stuff like being connected to the Internet / registered via Steam to play is going to take place hurting the people who actually buy the games a lot more than the pirates who will just be downloading the cracked version. Anyhoo...

This week's poll asks: Where do you live? Vote on your right!

Derek Smart Interview 03:10 am - Robert 'Apache' Howarth - Games: General News BERJAYA (18 comments)
CGO whipped up a nice little interview with everyone's favorite game designer, Derek Smart:

Computer Games - You are well known for your outspoken viewpoints on a number of topics. How do you think your public persona has affected the interest in 3000AD's games, if any?

Derek Smart - There's no such thing as bad publicity. If I really cared about how my persona affected my games, I'd have packed up and moved to Canada by now. Everyone has a personality and I am no different. I just don't make excuses for mine and certainly don't tuck it away in the closet. Just like my games, you either like and respect me, or you don't. There's no in between - and I could care less either way.

There is a big difference between being an experienced outspoken person who knows what he's talking about; and just being a clueless outspoken loudmouth. I didn't need to prove myself to anyone; my work, my accomplishments and my uncompromising standards, say it all.

Ah, gotta love Daylight savings time. Now when I'm doing the Midnight update it's actually 12 am, as opposed to 1AM for half the year when Arizona is in Rockey Mountain time. I feel like I'm out on the West Coast again but without that whole 'sinking into the ocean' when the big one hits thing hanging over your head.

This week has a couple really nice releases; I have to say I'm looking forward to SWAT 4 quite a bit. Usually I'm not into the whole tactical action scene, but after playing the single player beta of it I had a lot of fun. I'll be getting the Doom 3 expansion too of course, since it's part of the job to 'stay in the know' about that kinda stuff. Keeping in that spirt, today's question is:

Do you overclock? Or, if you're a console player, do you mod your system?
