The cast in LEGO Star Wars is distinguished by several character archetypes. 
Who you bring along in Free Mode is quite important, since you can get stuck 
without the proper person. The game queues the last six or eight characters 
you swap bodies with at Dexter's Diner. If you are playing with a friend, 
sibling, or parent/guardian, you have the advantage. If you are playing alone 
in your Unabomber style shack, you are at a disadvantage; buffer your second 
character by switching him into non-active status and grabbing the people you 
need in the diner using a "disposable" character (the one you don't want 
should be the person you first occupy).



Primary Archetypes
Jedi
Jedi use lightsabers to fight enemies and can deflect blaster bolts by timing 
their attacks using the SQUARE key. When faced with objects or lights that 
they may affect through the manipulation of The Force, they must hold CIRCLE 
and have enough room for the camera to pan over to the object's destination. 
Being hit or releasing CIRCLE before the destination will relinquish the 
object's flight. All Jedi can double jump to a relatively moderate height. 
Each Jedi attacks differently depending on a single jump or a double jump. A 
backflip (Mario's somersault) attack always results in a double jump attack. 
Jedi also have "just frame" motions. Press the SQUARE key about a quarter 
second after a saber swing ends and the subsequent saber swing will be more 
powerful. Up to two "just frame" moves can be chained after the first (the 
game only allows three-hit comboes). If both "just frame" attacks hit a 
blocking enemy, the enemy will take damage on the second swing. This may or 
may not be useful for some enemies who like to turtle.

Dark Jedi
Dark Jedi are Jedi clones, but may also affect black or red objects. Light 
Jedi may affect certain blue and white objects. Both manner of the Jedi may 
affect brown, tan, or grey objects and LEGO bricks without problems. Darth 
Maul will probably be the cheapest Dark Jedi to get; get him early if only to 
unlock the hidden paths in Theed Palace and other stages to grab studs and 
secrets.

Blaster
Blaster characters are the Han Solo/Carth types who run and fire. Always play 
a blaster character if you're into killing, since the AI's blaster bolts are 
about 25% the strength of a player's shots (for some reason). Blaster 
characters cannot block blaster bolts or other Jedi - they certainly cannot 
win against enemy Jedi without buddy support since they have no countermoves 
against The Force's Dark Side. They also cannot double jump or manipulate 
things with The Force. To get to high areas, blaster character hit CIRCLE to 
fire a grappling hook at pre-assigned grapple points. Blaster characters can 
also shoot bullseye targets; these are vital in some stages (Droid Factory) 
and open bonuses in other stages (Kamino). All blaster characters can move 
while shooting (after the first shot) provided they are running at full tilt.

Mobility
Mobility characters are those who have an affinity for jumping high or 
travelling far (this class also includes Astromech Droids). The best character 
for this move is regretably Jar Jar Binks since he's free; General Grievous 
can jump as high as Jar Jar, but he costs money (or a code) to unlock in the 
shop. He/it is also larger than Jar Jar and its four lightsabers can nudge 
your second character off narrow ledges and small platforms. For the most 
part, Jar Jar can access out of the way platforms in Free Mode and get a lot 
of secrets. Jar Jar is noticeably faster than all other characters, so it's 
not a bad idea to run around to explore a stage with this guy unless you 
absolutely cannot abide his presence. Other mobility characters include Anakin 
Skywalker (Kid) and Boba Fett, who are the only characters so far that can go 
into vents to access different areas. These characters, like Jar Jar, are 
mainly used to grab secrets in Free Mode. They are often provided in the 
party, unless you were stupid enough to unlock a lot of characters from the 
beginning.

Astromech Droid
R2/R4/R5 Units are multipurpose little bastards. Although they cannot attack 
enemies directly, they can stun (but not kill them) droids using an EMP attack 
(the same interface probe used to activate switches) and can hover for a short 
while over pits. Astromech droids are useful if you want to get 100% in the 
droid heavy stages; they can stun droidekas so your buddy (or you if you 
switch people) can destroy them quickly without exploding into LEGO bits. 
Astromech droids are also a good way to avoid enemies, since they never fire 
on them. Change into an astromech droid when surrounded on Free Mode and 
simply roll away without a problem. Finally, astromech droids can hover 
further than Jango Fett or Geonosians can, so be aware of that.

Protocol Droid
Protocol droids are only used to unlock C3PO doors. They can't jump or run, so 
don't bother using them beyond door unlocking.

Civilian
Civilians have no special abilities and are usually objectives.

Combat
These characters are created solely for close combat and not much else. Play 
them if you want, but their single-minded specialty leaves them unfit for 
exploration.



Other Abilities and Exceptions
Hover
Certain characters like Yoda, Jango Fett, Geonosians and Astromech droids can 
hover instead of jump (Yoda is an exception to that exception). When hovering, 
these characters move faster and can stray over small pits (but don't try it). 
Yoda can only do this while unarmed, so use him only if you're forced to.

Shields
Droidekas can create a shield around themselves which can help you survive 
some stages if you're playing alone. Just remember that if they roll, they 
can't fire or protect themselves. Droidekas can walk (slowly) and keep their 
shields up and fire back. If you change into a droideka while still, it comes 
into play with its shields up and can be beneficial if you use it to block 
incoming fire and then switch back to your attacking character.

Droids
All droids are vulnerable to an astromech droid's "zapping arm". If hit, a 
droid will power-down and be vulnerable for a few seconds. Although astromech 
droids cannot actively kill droids, they can disable droids so their buddy can 
destroy them. Note if the other player is playing a droid (which includes 
Grievous), they can be shutdown if the zapping arm touches them. Simply change 
characters (Free Mode) to get out of this situation.


General Grievous
General Grievous looks like a Jedi, plays like a Jedi, but it ain't Jedi since 
it cannot manipulate The Force. It can jump as high as Jar Jar Binks (and is 
the only other high-jumping cast member in the game) so it can be used to 
gather any of the secrets Jar Jar Binks can if you prefer using a lightsaber 
wielding terrorbot instead of a racially influenced "Zip Coon" Gungan.

Note about the unlocks: you only unlock access to characters in the shop. You 
still need to buy those characters with money. The extras (cheat codes) are 
actually unlocked and bought at the same time, so you can save that $1,000,000 
for the characters instead of the extras. Invincibility should help you in 
getting the Jedi Meter to full in some tough stages.
